Most often the fight to pick them up removes alot of scales and they bleed out easily.

What would you say is usually the best time of the day to be out there? I had my best luck in the morning, would you say that's typical?

9-11 has been good ,but 2-4 was just as good on Sunday.

It seems if you are on them you'll catch them if your not...well you know the drill and I mean drill..drill..drill!

I will be heading up to BSL tomorrow morning to give it a try for crappies and toulibies. Is there any particular depths we should try. Last year about this time we found some in about 25 fow suspended at 15. Does that sound about right still? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's been a while since I fished Tullibees. Going to give it a try this weekend. Any tips on color or size of jigs?

Also, anyone tried to fillet and fry-up like walleye? Had some fresh sauted "Lake Herring" at an fancy seafood place in Mpls. and it was fantastic.

Hit BSL by 7:30 am and went straight for one of my way points.

I don't think I was down for 2 minutes and it was tullie time.

The action was fast and furious. We had several fish when my Dad say's we have only fished for an hour.

08iceseason577.jpg

We both lost a few at the bottom of the hole.I guess Mallard 10" would have come in handy ,but I drilled over 60 holes today and I know as bad as I hurt now with my 8" a 10" would have buried me. shocked

08iceseason578.jpg

We stuck a few smaller slabs and then the ole man tags this beauty.

08iceseason575.jpg

Around noon the tullies had moved, where I dunno. So we decided to fill up some more on crappies and made the move to where I knew we could get them and we did.

I left Dad in the house to fish and since it was soooooo nice I drilled a bunch of hole and gunned them.

Having been using some wazies I stayed with them and low and behold I drilled several gills along with many average eater crappies.

Pops needs to work on his picture taking a bit.

We had a great multi species day. Oh snagged a few rockies to add into the mix.Boy do they give a guy a good battle.

Heading back out in the am with Dad.

Rumor has it a few others may join.

Well 1st off I LOVE my Strikemaster Lazer!!!!!!!

Bores holes twice as quick as that Jiffy STX Pro Stealth.

I normally never tip ,but for these tullies and gills I have been.1 waxie is all it takes.

I know later when those tullies are really gorging themselves tipping is not needed.

Pannies are off the bottom tullies up high.Sure does keep a guy on his toes.

Good to hear that the Strikemaster is treating you well!

I've drilled hundreds and hundreds of holes. Not 1 issue.

A bit cold blooded ,but it warms up after a minute and blows through the ice quicker then any other auger I've used before.

It's alot lighter then that Jiffy Legend I use to have too.

I got out on B.S. Fri & Sat, 2 clear sunny days. Took me a day and a half to locate the tullies. It was a light & sporatic bite too. I had to downsize my rigging. Missed a few and iced a couple. They are scrappy fighters, almost feel like a trout on the line. Lost one 3/4 to the hole. I left a little meat on the skin to reduce the oil stripe and cut out the Y-bones. They tasted great pan fried. I hope to get back up while the ice is good.

I just took 20 out of the smoker.

I coated them after the brine with brown sugar....boy do I got some fish candy!

they do seem scattered and although they have some mayfly larva in them they are not packed yet.

Once we get this snow to melt off we will see more of those tullis concentrated over the larva releasing from the bottom.

Turn your gain up a bit to see if you can mark this food source.

You'll know your in the right area.

I've managed to find a little pinch of deep water between a couple shallow areas that has been a good producer over the past 3 weekends.

Got another 20 for the smoker this weekend.

The lake is snow free and the water is pouring down the holes.

The mayflies should be releasing very soon.

Very nice CK, you're making me green with envy. Next year I'm going to have to try to get over that way for some Tullibee's. I think I will run out of time this year.

Thanks for the great pics.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
