St. Croix River Fishing Reports

The closest is High 5 Archery. Just south of Hwy 36 on Co Rd 5.

The best for info would be Blue Ribbon Bait. Just north of Hwy 94 on Century Ave/Hwy 120.

fished on the Wisconsin side from noon till dark. Caught two crappies 15 feet off the bottom with plastics. Lots of lookers that didn't even nibble. Nothing on the deadstick or a tip up. Marked fish all day but they weren't taking. Does anyone have any luck with tip ups on the croix? Anyone have any advice for a small jig that is heavy?

It was just a very poor day for fishing today on the Croix, plain and simple. :-(

Whats wrong with you? I don't think I've ever heard you say something like that. You were the man that could ice fish when no one else could! Is somebody losing their touch?

I have to agree its been tougher out there this year. Even having trouble on the hotspot from last year the couple times I've tried it!

Went back to the lakes yesterday and even that was terrible compared to normal. Plan on heading out to the Croix today though.

I think some STABLE WEATHER is in order. (seemed to be the ticket towards the end of ice season last year)

I was on the Croix from 6:15am - 2pm yesterday.

Started by the Hi-lines & tried 4 locations down to the north end of Shantytown. 15' - 37'.

Lookers but no takers.... again.......

Threw lots to them, no go, whatever they are.

Hey Newbie

I told walleye 6 it was like I was fishing with a snap swivel and nothing else. I only fished for two hours from 11:30 to 1:30 pm and I saw no movement in the fish at all....so I left. Maybe if I stayed around longer, I would have gotten into them, but I don't think so.

Been doing pretty good prior to yesterday, but definitely hit the wall yesterday. Had a little mishap with my truck yesterday which didn't help my mood. lol

Good luck out there!

The crappie on the Croix seems to have very different moods. I was there today and had no reaction from any fish. Then I toss out various other lures at them to see if I can get any kind of reaction. Coincicdental thing is everytime, I go to change to a different lure, I would get a fish that would show up and make a bee line to the deadstick setup. Almost always there would be a little nibble and then the fish would swim away. Eventually I deadstick my biggest crappie minnow on it. Then the crappie would go and bite it. About only one crappie worthy enough to keep.

Fished the wisc. side south of shanty town from 7-11 today.Schools of something(bait?) showing up regularly up to 6 ft off bottom. Had two that I thought might bite, but came off bottom, looked at my bait and sank out of sight. It was the same story as yesterday.

Was out yesterday for the first time. Set up away from anyone on the wi side and caught 3 nice crappies and lost another at the hole. 3 on dead stick, one on jig with minnow head.

Great weather and fun to catch and release a few.

Gander mountain in Woodbury has live bait as well.

I won't admit the river has won the war but it is winning the battle. The last three times out I have caught one crappie combined. I have downsized jigs and line, jigging raps, airplane jigs, rattle spoons, rattling flyer spoons, white and red plastics, Gulp! waxies, real waxies, minnow heads, minnow tails, fathead minnows, crappie minnows, deadsticking, aggressive jigging, depths from 25-40 feet. Any advice would be great! I am a catch and release guy so if anybody wants to show me the ropes you can have whatever you teach me to catch!

Same here.

Gee, perhaps there's just "less of them out there"???

Are the two of you getting away from the crowds? How far off of the bottom are you fishing? Don't over think the presentation side of things, if there are active fish around, they'll bite. If you fish 10-15 mins and don't get a bite, move. 30 fow, jig 4-6' off the bottom seemed to work Monday. I was a quarter mile from the next closest shack and that was a single guy also. Hope this helps

Thanks for the insight.

Yes. Stayed away from the crowds.

Multiple depths off the bottom.

Moved 4 times in a 1/2 day.

Multiple presentations.

yeah I have been staying away from the crowds for the most part. I did fish around shanty town on the wisconsin side one day. As for how far off the bottom I have been moving up and down as fish move in but usually 4-8 feet off the bottom. Bad days fishing are better than good days working I guess!

Finally got into some fish on the river today. Ended up with 6 crappies, 5 around 9 and one slab that was 13, three white bass which were all pretty decent size, and what I think was a shad but it was around 11 inches! I was in 38 feet of water on the wisconsin side

pretty slow today. Found some fish, but they didn't seem very active. I was up north of HWY 8 fishing last night and did really well on crappies. I've just decided that St. Croix crappies are just plain stubborn.

man, been hoping to get out on the st croix but don't really know where abouts to go. I've never been out there and I'm kind of skiddish because its a river and don't want to get on to to thin stuff. Any help from someone who frequents this spot would be very appreiated. Thanks much!

Just follow the truck tracks made by other people...only don't just drive onto the ice just to drive up the bank on the other side. grin

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
