Many big walleyes (26+) coming out of Sand Bay. Check out the story in Dec 18 Int'l Falls Daily Journal Outdoors page (www.ifallsdailyjournal.com). Jigging Raps, Glow Jigs and even tip-ups are all working well for these bruisers. Some are suspended up high. We have great bite right now!

We had two different groups that came on our "Bring your own gear" lodging special this weekend. What was really neat is how they worked together to produce some big fish. Many were caught in the 20's with the biggest being 29". Congrats to Kevin Jayson from Coon Rapids. Rainy is a big lake and when people work together great things can happen. People are driving out to Birch Point. We have great ice and a great winter ahead of us.

Sincerely,

Woody

Kevin Jayson's 29 incher! Caught 12/20/2009

i am just home from RAINY LAKE MINNESOTA and WOODYS RAINY LAKE RESORT. we went to WOODYS with the intention of using our own gear and shacks...after a 520 mile drive, we arrived on sunday afternoon and after checking in and unloading our gear into our gorgeous cabin we headed to the lake. we stopped at the OUTDOORSMANS HEADQUARTERS in INTERNATIONAL FALLS MINNESOTA and got our bait and liceneses. we then headed to SAND BAY, where we wanted to fish our first afternoon. it was -20 degrees with no wind, we found a couple spots away from the perm shacks and drilled enough holes about 150 feet apart for 2 portables in 27 feet of water. after the first hole i knew we were in for a long weekend unless we adapted. the heavy snow on the ice caused water to erupt out of our holes for approximently 4-5 minutes. thus flooding our area instently. well we set up and fished anyway. between the 4 of us we caught numerous perch and a few small walleyes. everything almost immediately froze to the ice. i kept 1 real nice jumbo perch, no one else kept a fish. after packing up we had some supper and as a group we decided to rent a perm shack from WOODY. WOODY took care of us and put us in a 10 hole shack, an actually very warm and comfy perm ice house, in 31 feet of water within 300 feet of the international border with CANADA. on monday (-40 degrees, a 99 yr old record for low temp was broken) we headed out for our first day in WOODYS HOUSE. we kept 7 walleyes (14-16 inches) and 2 perch. the big 2 fish of the day were a 4lb eel pout and a 28 inch northern pike that i caught. my AUSTIN RODS preformed beyond expectations,. if you dont fish with an AUSTIN rod, get one, you wont be disappointed. we caught roughly 25 small walleyes that we released. after supper at the cabin we played some good old euchre, drank a bunch of beers and got a good nights sleep. day 2 also broke a state record for low temp, a balmy yet comfy -34. well i will never ever forget that day. my old fishing buddy, who is like a father to me, GARY FULMER caught not 1, but 2, 28 inch walleyes. this by far made the trip memorable. absolutely awesome fish. another friend with me, JASON CAUDILLO, caught a 22 inch walleye that was released due to the slot limit. my son JAKE (my favorite fishing partner) and i caught numerous "eater" walleyes. day 2 yeilded approximently 30 fish caught, with most released. most fish were caught on small jigging spoons and minnows or partial minnows. we had a really great trip, adapted to the cold and made some awesome memories. check out the pictures at www.fairlyreliable.com. if you are looking for a place to get away and have a great time on the ice i highly suggest WOODYS RAINY LAKE RESORT. i have been there 2 times now and WOODY and his beautiful wife LEEANNE go out of there way to make sure you enjoy your time there and have fun. an awesome resort on an awesome fishery (i personally caught 6 species of fish in 2 1/2 days fishing...perch, walleye, sauger, northern pike, tulipee, and eel pout). just down the street 1/2 block from WOODYS RAINY LAKE RESORT, is GRANDMAS PANTRY, an awesome place for breakfast before heading onto the ice. with out a doubt i can say "I WILL RETURN TO WOODYS RAINY LAKE RESORT!!!" and i look great in my new WOODYS GEAR!!

Hi G.A.,

Rainy has been slow, somedays you can go out & do ok, my last 3 trips I have caught 1 walleye each trip, a 26", 16" & a 16.75", so nice walleyes...just not many., I did hear a report where some guys had sledded east of bushyhead and did well on big walleyes. What is nice about living up here, is if the fish aren't going one place, there are endless fishing spots & lakes. Lately I have been hitting a spot with massive size crappies (2 + lb.) are common.,we also have had some walleyes mixed in with the walleyes, only difference is, the walleyes are on the bottom., Lake trout are hitting too. Now tommorow fishing might be fantastic on Rainy, how do you know??? You try it. Honestly everytime I go out fishing, I plan on doing well. It doesn't mean I always do well, but using past fishing trips & using the knowledge I have learned will help to try & make it a great trip.

Sincerely,

Fishmeister

Thanks fishmeister. Yep that's why its called "fishing". My girlfriend and I will be back up at Woody's on the 10th of February to give it another try. Hopefully it's not -40 again like over new years when we sledded out to untouched territory. We will be bringing the portable but don't have a snow machine so I will have to get Woody out on a scout mission for us to find some good area. I assume the crappies are on the canadian side that you are catching or are they on a different lake? We would love to do some fishin with ya again if you have time. I will post a little closer to when we leave. We will definately stop in at your hardee's and have a fresh burger. We will be fishin for 4 days and can't wait to get back up there. Good luck and hope to talk to you soon.

Headed up wknd of March 13-14. First time on Rainy and staying at the Falls. Have only heard good things about them. Just wondering what kind of tackle I should be bringing? I got the standard buckshots, chubbys, lindy darters, jiggn rap, swedish pimps. Also will be the last ice fishing trip of the season for my group, so I hope to make it memorable! Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

Nice Reds there and a heck of a Sheepshead, I was in Marco Island, FL at the end of March and got into some dandy Snook up to 32". What a fight those saltwater fish put up compared to the freshwater fish we catch around here.

Fishing much slower today. Boat control a major problem. First fish of the day was a 37" pike 15-1/2 lb that inhaled my X-Rap. A super fatty so probably full of eggs. Only got 4 more bass after that. Water in low 40s everywhere I checked.

Fished 8a.m. - 6 p.m. 74 fish. All bass except two small pike. No bass over 4 lb but lots over 3. Most on jig and plastic. There was another boat at the landing. I even saw one boat on the lake that was fishing! Starting to git too crowded.

Sand Bay surface temps jumped 10 degrees today!. It was 53 there and over 60 in some of the back bays. A beautiful day with no wind and full sun. Fishing was slow for me - 11 bass and one pike in five hours. I caught the same bass that I lost yesterday when line broke and got my marabou jig back. He bit on (you guessed it) another marabou jig.

Pike were in the shallows but I couldn't get my boat back in there. Only about 6 inches of water over the weeds. If the lake was normal height, I could have had some fun but it is two feet low and that made all the difference in this spot. Blew a fuse on my trolling motor trying to plow through all that mess. But I could see em rolling and chasing in that shallow water and had to give it a try.

Bugs are out. Saw a dragonfly and some mosquitoes yesterday! More likely to see a snowman in mid-April up here than a dragonfly. Cabbage is already growing. It is 2-3 feet high in about 7-9 feet of water.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
