2020 Detroit Lakes-Pelican Rapids Fishing Reports - Lake Conditions

Recommended Posts

Me and Fisherdog19 hit a small lake near my place, we punched a zillion holes in one area of the lake! We fished from 8 feet in the weeds, to 26 feet in no mans land and all we found was perch and a few pike.

I've had some luck on this lake late ice last year and during the summer. I know there are some slabs and walters in there but we had no luck last night. A different area of the lake will be fished next time, until I find out where they are hiding.

I had fun, and got to try out the Solo by Strikemaster, what a powerhead. That thing cut through like butter. 5" of ice is all we could find.

We'll for sure need to find them fish out there; it's not a huge lake so we should be able to find them. Next time we need a few more guys and a full day to swiss cheese the lake. They can't hide forever. I'll bring my camera as well.

Brian Brosdahl was trying to sell me a Solo headed auger at Gander the other day, and it took him about 17 pulls to get it started!! He got pretty flustered! Im sure they are darn nice, and it was just "flooded" I got a good chuckle out of it anyway.

First time out on the hardwater this evening. This was half of what we got. My buddy took the other half. Biggest one was 13.5. Forgot the camera so wasn't able to take pictures until I got home.

Couple of pike all under 30" all bigger than 20" all on sucker tip ups

After dark crappies came in all on crappie minnows

Eyeslayer, nice catch!!!! Looks like some 113 crappies to me!!

I caught 3 walleyes last night on an area lake. I fished my butt off for them though, I drilled holes all over a big feeding flat and some up against the drop along the weed edge in 12 feet of water.

I caught all of the fish up against the weeds about a half hour before dark.

Sat for about 4 hours at longbridge and saw some slabs and eye on the camera but couldn't get me any bites. Got me some sunniest and a perchy nothing exciting, but I did get out on the ice.

I went out on little detroit on tuesday afternoon on the open ice by the pavilion. The fishing was slow. A half hour before sundown, the sunnies and crappies were on a bite. I used teardrops with waxworms, an a tipup with shiners. The sunnies and crappies were eaters but nothing big. And the tip up resulted in a stolen shiner.

Sitting in the open ice was cold, but bearable due to no wind. It was -5 temp. after dark when I left. Needless to say I knew when to pack it up. Maybe things will get better with a warm up.

Was out on the little bay across from swannies that connects to Big C. this afternoon and for the 3rd time this week all I could manage was a few small sunnies! Not a crappie to be seen! I will not being going back there anytime soon!

I was out on Middle in front of Swannies yesterday and I cold not get a bite.. saw a couple slimers on the camera. We also tried over by the south access off the reeds with no luck except for a little northern. The ice seemed to be pretty consistant 8-11". I had my wheeler out pulling a trailer and felt pretty safe out there.

Finally got out today. Too late to search for spots, so I just drove up to one of the community holes on Lida. Did ok, brought home three walleyes and two crappies. Got some perch and one bluegill. Fished 21 feet of water. Walleyes bit like northerns, heard the bobber pop and then they ran like the wind. Lost a couple of other aggressive bites and a big crappie in the hole. Released one 23" walleye.

Hit a area lake east of my place and caught 14 eyes last night between 12-19" Most of them were on the smaller size but it was a fun night. All near the first drop and the weed edge. Lindy flyer's and frostee spoons and a minnow head did the damage!!!

After this storm it will be tough to get back there because I don't have a sled yet.... Hmmmmmm I may have to get one, and soon.

Stopped by Swede Grove yesterday for a few hours. Fishing was poor, did not mark or see a fish. Ice was 11-12" and full size rigs were entering from the boat ramp. Snow was chewed up pretty good at the ramp until you got out a ways. Snow drifts were too bad to access at the north bay. A lot of houses on the north bay, probably 18 of them. Travel on the ice itself wasn't bad, 4-6 inches of snow on top of the ice. No flooding of the holes I drilled, but water was up to the edge. DL area did not get half the snow Fargo did.

Got out on Bass, ended up catching some pike, bass, and some really decent crappies. The bite was on at sundown and plucked off a few over the next hour after the initial flurry. It was fun, looking to get my little skid house out this week on South Twin.

Got my wheel house out today, and did some fishing to make sure it was on a good spot. Ended up with about 10 gills, which were very tight lipped, up to 9.5", about 8 crappies, and 5 nice eyes. Biggest eye was 27" that my buddy got. My boy got to use his Vexilar for the first time that he got as a Christmas present and he caught the first 5 fish of the day. Nice to have the house on a day bite spot, last year it wasn't any good until the sun was down, now we can catch fish 24 hours a day!!! Leech, when you coming down?

Fisherdog,if you had another vehicle pull the house out, I think you drove past me yesterday.

We had some respectable smorgasboard fishing also. Several largemouth bass, some nice blugills, a few northerns, and a crappie. All the bass and all but one of the northerns came on sucker minnows, not shiners, Bluegills and the crappie came on soft plastics for me and wax worms for my brother. The cicada lure got shut out for the first time this year.

The lake was not plowed when I got out there, so of course, I got stuck. Later in the day, someone did some plowing and there was a little flooding in a couple of spots. Nothing major though.

I was out on Eagle lake just west of Frazee---------someone had plowed a 4 lane hiway out from the access---------that was great---but I still didn't get anything. Once you got off the main road there was slush under the snow--but still driveable with the 4 x 4.

Leech,

How's the ice/slush up in your neck of the woods? We'll be up at our deer camp on Round next weekend. I talked to Randy at Tamarac and he hurt his shoulder so he hasn't been out and hadn't heard anything since they closed this winter. I'm hoping to fish Little Bemidji, Round and Waboose. Through out the weekend. Hopefully we can can wheelers out on Round/Bemidji or even many point if the fishing is any good out there.

Thanks

Lots of snow and anywhere there is a trail that has been used slush was a problem.. But that was last weekend King. Not sure on what the cool temps have done to it this week. I'll be out plenty this weekend so I will definitely keep you posted.

Cicada, probably was me in the maroon GMC, my buddy was pulling the house in a blue suburban. I thought I saw your truck at the access. We spent the night last night and it was slow but it may have been the cold front.

Leech, Genz stuck the 27", his kid got a 25.5" eye last night.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
