2020 Detroit Lakes-Pelican Rapids Fishing Reports - Lake Conditions

Recommended Posts

Got out Sunday, fished in 180 fow, got all the fish on the surface. Ended up with about 20 Mahi Mahi and then went out to 2000+ fow and got some yellow fin tuna. I know it's not a DL report, but I figured you'd want a Cabo report grin May get out again Friday for some more action, will post pics when I get back Sunday. Enjoy the warm spell in DL.
Now how are any of us supposed to compete with that? At least we don't smell like sun screen wearin, Cohiba smokin, margarita drinkin tuna.

Thanks for the report, I'm just a little jealous if you couldn't tell.

I found a little inside turn last night on Little D. My son had a good time jerking up decent sunnies intil the rattle wheel starting rattling. (isn't that a great sound) A few minutes later we pull up a nice 34" norsky. That was the end of the fish didn't catch anything else for the next hour. Must have been another big fish lurking nearby.

Bring us back some fish steaks to cook up in the ice house when you get back Pete. The warm spell is awesome man.

Just got back from Big C..fished all day into early evening..my friends girlfriend caught her first 24" eye, in 26' of water, we were in 22', had several eyes come up to the minnow (using camera), but just kissed it..they were using shiners, we were using rainbows, otherwise except for depth everything was the same...

She was extremely proud and he is happy, now he will have a partner...

If you saw my earlier post from Sunday I was happy with my spot and caught some nice eyes on Sunday, well I went back out to the same spot tonight and got skunked. One bite that seemed like an eye bite but he spit it out right before the hook set. Now I'm thinking I may have to move the house before people come out on Friday. The frustrating part was I could see fish come off the bottom to look at the bait, but they didn't want to take the bait no matter what I tried.

Fishing was pretty good up till last night....weak low pressure system came through and the wind changed from South to NW.Crappy this morning also.Even the small perch weren't agressive this morning.Should get better in the next few days as the wind will switch to the SW again.

Has anyone conistently catching fish this week? I have a new coworker from Missouri that's never been on ice and he asked if I would take him fishing. I would like to just get him on some sunfish.

Right now, I am thinking that Little Detroit is going to have to do, but i'd rather not sit in the commotion. My dad hasn't been catching anything and neither have his buddies on our usual lakes. A little direction would be great. Thanks guys

kingrmn@yahoo if you would be so kind.

Sunnies are super easy to catch on Little D. If you want a little peace just drive past the commotion. I have been trolling all over looking for crappies. Haven't found any but have found some decent sunnies. Look for 13-14' simple jig with a waxie will catch all the sunnies you want. watch your vex, if the sunnies disappear switch to a jig/minnow head for the norsky that is lurking under your house.

Kingr, do him a favor and spare him from this sport of ice fishing. Sitting in frigid temps, on frozen lakes, waiting for the fish to come to you. Man that doesnt sound smart in theory.

Just kidding. I have heard a few good things about Lida lately. Multli species with some good action.

Scavre,

That theory has never been proven...

His kids are bugging him to go, but his wife said they can't go until he goes and sees what it's all about.

Fished Lizzie yesterday afternoon until after dark. Caught 15 dinky perch. Talked to a couple of guys in a permanent house that had a camera. They had seen a bunch of walleyes, but couldn't get them to bite.

Was ouy yesterday afternoon with my little guy. ( 4 year old) Caught quite a few nice sunnies and a 14" eye and a snake northern. (little D). Am taking a friend of a freind and his 4 grandkids out this afternoon. They are from the cities and only get out about once a year. Hoepfully the sunnies co-operate today.

Well I took my coworker out on Big Rush yesterday. I gave him the option of catching a lot of small fish (sunnies on Little D) or a couple big fish (northerns on Big Rush). He had a blast. Brought him out to a friends spear house, then we fished in 8ft of water and he caught one 5lb northern and we saw 2 fish that were over 10lbs I bet. He got a kick out it. The fish were ver lethargic though. The perch didn't even bite our waxies.

Made it out to Lida this morning. Went on the hunt for some Crappies and ended up catching about 6 that were between 11-13 inches and a few smaller ones. They were very finicky but once you could coax them into biting they hit the jig pretty good. It was a nice day again until the wind came up around noon.

Tried to fish Lida today. Stopped at that fleet place to pick up a spare battery for my vex and/or lights. They were out, so I am blaming them for my problems. Just kidding Ron. Got out there and found that I grabbed the battery that wouldn't hold a charge. Got about a minute on the vex then the screaming started. Caught 14 or 15 small perch. Had to leave for home and got the right battery. Too lazy to go back to Lida, so I just ran out to a small local lake. Caught 14 or 15 bluegills. Mostly smaller ones although a couple might have been cleanable.

Hey, huntnfish, were you driving a burgundy full size pickup?

No, I was driving a white one. Your day sounds like the one I had last weekend. One of those days that nothing seems to work like its supposed to.

I was unable to go Saturday. Sunday before the game started, a guy was running around in a pull-over clam. Kind of like someone from this site might do.

The kids from the cities had a great time saturday on Little D. We had two houses set up about 15 yards apart. One shallow at about 9 feet and the other a bit deeper in 13'. The perch were hungry in the shallow one and the sunnies/northerns in the deeper one. They caught a bunch of fish. A couple 30 inch northerns really had them hooting. My tackle box is a bit lighter as they were bit off 6 times. Plus the weather was fantastic.

I was wondering if there is a lake in the area with a consitent crappie bite. I have been fishing all over Lida the last few weeks and have been getting 1-5 fish per night. What I would like to know is if there is a lake that produces more numbers rather then size.

If there is most people wouldnt say cause in a day everyone and there brothers would be there .But it would be nice to find a spot like that.

I'm going to vent a little bit. I went to leech on sat. We fished from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm. We were told the big bite was from 4 to 6. We caught 3 small walleyes in that period and then the flasher stoped showing fish again.

We went out to Sallie on sun morning. Didnt catch a fish. The biggest concern was trying not to get trampled by the mass exedus of guys pulling their houses off the lake.

On monday we went to Little D. Caught a few panfish and got two small northerns on the tip ups.

All and all about the worst three day weekend that could happen on the ice. Hopefully things pickup soon!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
