Do that all over again, and you'll find some fish! The evening and into night bite is pretty good with cranks right now...

Hey Matt. Left you a v-mail a few weeks back. Didn't get the message? Ya, I kinda figured you'd be up to your neck in the bear deal. No biggee. I'm not likely to fish it either. My project list isn't really getting any shorter this year, and winter is fast approaching.

Give me a call when your over this way. We'll have to pound some ground together again this year.

Matthew, give me a call this week... I'll be in TRF this weekend!

This forum is so slow that it's depressing! It's not for the lack of fishermen or fishing going on! The bite on Bemidji is absolutely hot right now. Vertical jigging over deeper water is working well during the day, as is pulling leadcore off the edges of mid-lake structure. The evening crankbait bite is the bite I've seen all year, but the crowds on some evenings have been terrible...

Many other lakes in the area are feeling fall as well! It's less than 30 degrees as I type this, so I'm sure the bite is only getting better each day from here on out!

Bear season came and went with a bang. Lots of bears around, not a ton of hunters seen, but I saw and heard some success stories!

Bring on the grouse season!!

Evidently, we missed each other again bud. Just give me a call when you're headed over this way. Next few month's weekends will find me and the kids engaged in various outdoor activities. Pete, Abbey, and Jake are all pumped about fall hunting, and fishing.

You seeing or hearing any ruffies up nort? Jacob is particularly excited about walking with Dad for grouse this year!

Opening weekend of whitefish season saw 20 whitefish in my friend's net on Big Turtle. Just out of curiosity i put my net in on Grant Lake. I pulled the net after having to untagle a northern from it every single day. They were all over 24 inches, which is interesting to learn, but i was hoping for some tulibees.

We took a break from it for a little while. Then last week, either tues or wed, i pulled the net on big turtle again and there were 4 tulibees in it, no whitefish. One 23" Walleye. (released of course) Still up in the air what im going to do with all the fish. Brined and smoked about 8 of them. Dry cured and smoked 4 of them. The dry cure turned out awesome, like fish bacon.

I and two friends went out to Grace today for our first try on this ice. We set up in 15 feet of water straight out from the public access. I fished a new gold northland mooska 1/8 oz. jig with a wax worm. We had a good time pullin perch out for four hours from 10 am to 2 pm. We kept about 40 perch. A neighbor on thelake pulled in a couple walleyes and one of my buddies got a 14 inch walleye. All in all, it was a good day of fishing. My new jig outfished my buddies 3 to 1. Can't say it was all the jig, but i think it played a part. Good first time on the ice.

Any good updates out there guys?

I got out for just a few days after Christmas and did manage some eyes and a pout in 25 fow.

Now I'm back working in MT for a few more weeks so need to get my fishing fix through all your reports!

Can't wait to get back and out on the lake!

Pretty slow around your house Clueless! grin I moved to the north of you about 100 yards and will be moving the house again on Wednesday night after work a little more west! wink Your house was busy all weekend, and the boys were over there yesterday shoveling, I did not walk over to see what they were shoveling, but I may put some 4x4's under your house, due to the snow around it and the weight pushing water on top. Send ma a text if you would like me to do this. Also let your fish house watchers know!

Managed a few eyes in the new spot, and some perch and those darn pout! cry

Love those darn pout!!! Send them over to my house so I can catch them when I get back!

The guys put 4 x 4s under it on Monday as the 2x's were all but swallowed up.

If it gets too warm the next few days and starts to sink any more, they may just pull it for me.

Getting any more ice out there yet?

Your house was fine clueless! Buck and I moved our house to dry ground tonight, and put 4x4's under it! I will keep an eye on yours when we are out there. You have another house just in front of yours by where we were!

Finally had a day to back away from the rentals and do some fishing the other day. After checking on renters to make sure all was good, I was off to the lake with a buddy.

First fish on the list were crappies and 'gills. We started in 26' of water hoping for a nice mix, but only found some small crappies. After drilling a line up the break and leap-frogging our way up we found a pair of holes with fish suspended up to 6' off bottom, and we set up camp there, in 14-15' of water. We had constant action all day, a nice bluegill bonanza. We caught sizes from baby to bear, with about half of the fish going 8" or better, one which went an incredible 11 1/16th inches.

After we had our fill and got a few pics, we were on to Lake Bemidji to scout a new spot and chase some predators... We set up on a steep ledge in 26' of water and worked over fish from 3-5:15. We managed a few 'eyes and a lone 'pout. I also lost a giant that literally kept me up that night. The following morning we moved a rental shack and scouted it for a couple of hours. Another big fish was dropped, and we managed to tag a 'pout and another really healthy walter. The bite isn't fast and furious on Bemidji, but it sure is worth the effort...

Awesome days on the ice! Can't wait for another free day to do it all over again!

Sounds like it's going good on Bemidji, URL tends to slow down this time of year, but than again, this isn't your typical winter!

Bemidji has been nice and steady! Walleyes cooperate most nights and mornings, with the occassional daytime fish tossed in. Plenty of perch on the chew this year to keep a guy busy!

Good luck when you're up!

Been fishing in my neck of the woods and doing good on the pannies lately. I'm finding them in the 14-18 foot range, out off the weeds a little ways. The agressive fish are up off the bottome 3-6 feet and are pounding the jig and plastics.

I am curious about accessing either Kitchi or Beltrami. Are they right off the highway? Anyone trying either of these lakes lately? Thanks in advance.

Kitchi can be accessed through the resorts on the north side... Kitchi Landing, etc.. Panfish bite was okay early on Kitchi, then peetered out a bit. Haven't been out there or heard much in weeks. Beltrami has been slow this year, but some crappies and walleyes are being caught. Gotta work a bit. The access is down Beltrami Lake Rd. off of 71...

Stopped in again and figured I'd add a post to the Bemidji area, since it's kind of quiet!!

The Bite on Lake Bemidji has been nothing short of stellar! I have been out the last 4 days and it has been solid. Lots of nice walleyes and some decent numbers popping up. Perch are starting to get active, as well as the tullies and eelpout. Seems there are fish in nearly every depth that are willing to play... 14-19' of water is where most of our fishing was done the last few days, one fish came from 8' of water, and a bunch of eaters from 33'. Rainbows have been the bait of choice, whether on a spoon or under a float...

Here are a few pics from this week, including my sons 27" tanker as well as Erick from the group Atmosphere with a beautiful little 'pout!

Thanks for the awesome report! Planning on making the trip to my hometown this weekend for the final weekend of the walleye season. We plan on getting out on bemidji in the mornings and evenings and going to some smaller area lakes to try a mix of panfish as well. Hopefully we can also put some eelpout on the ice friday night!!

Lots of good info here. I'm new to this board but did quite a bit of reading on these posts along with other threads. I live in Bemidji and fish the area lakes constantly in the summer. I'm trying to get more serious about ice fishing so I've been out more this year than I have the rest of my life. I'll be out this weekend also, probably go Bemidji tonight and then some others south of here later in the weekend.

I really don't know how you guys have such good luck, there are some big ol fish in those pictures.

Has anyone been pulling any big pike up around here? And if so, are you just using suckers on tip ups or what?

Otherwise, it looks like people have been catching walleye/perchy in a multitude of depths. And how has the overnight fishing been? Its been years since I've stayed up late on the ice, but I wanna give it a shot before the ice is gone this year.

I took some notes, and hopefully will have some good news to report.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
