Steve I am really getting addicted to this type of fishing, and I haven't even caught one yet!! I cant tell you guys how much fun it is exploring that lake and just seeing how much it can change in just a few feet! We started out today fishing between Evans and Lockhart islands in 30-50 fow, fished there for about 2 hours then moved over to the spot you mention Steve by Ripple and Blueberry, marked a couple fish but no takers, again was in about 35- 50 fow. I plan on being out the rest of the week pretty much just exploring and trying to get that first Laker. Again I appreciate all the tips and help you guys have helped me out with!!

Oh by the way, I did pick up the Sportsman Connection map book about 3 days ago...have been nose deep in it for about 2 days straight.

I was out both days this weekend, only had one bite but lost him. I caught fish out of the same hole during last week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Seems like the fish turned off for me on the weekend or I need to move to a new spot. I'm guessing a new spot. Heres a couple from last week.

Anyone catch a laker out there this year that can actually pull drag? Would like to see a pic of a real laker out of there someday. Rymann don't get discouraged about not catching one yet. Took me forever out there. There is more than one laker lake in the ely area. I will be back up soon if u would like to tag along.

Pat, why don't you post a pic of one of your own drag-pulling lakers? winkwinkgringrin

I caught those two on a chubby darter in about 54 feet of water last week. One hit instantly on the jig, but the other one took a little playing around. Both fish were caught within an hour between four and five o'clock.

Good deal, I hear alot of mixed reviews on the Chubby Darter, personally I have never tried one out.

Caught two today. Smallish, with the largest being 4 lbs. Had two lookers all morning on the jigging lures, so added a second tip-up about 11:30 and just sat in the vehicle listening to the radio and watching flags. Had three flags with one drop. Had live sucker on one and dead cisco on the other. All three flags came on cisco. Finished up about 3 p.m.

Lots of traffic out today. There were a few guys near Oliver, one near Dollar, two at the mouth of the North Arm, six up the Arm and a couple near the Dead River.

Good deal Steve, I was planning on going out today but decided I better study for my midterm tomorrow and finish up some other stuff school related. Going out tomorrow around 1pm haven't decided where I will head but I will figure something out. Where did you go out today?

This one was from last friday on Burntside. A 31 incher caught on a hali with a smelt eye on it in 48 feet of water. Got it on my crappie rod fishing for smelt (what a battle). Also between myself and one other guy we removed about 100 smelt from the lake. Forgot to mention that this fish was released.

Sweet fish, tullibee, and nice image in the evening sun. What a battle. gringrin

Also, good job on the C&R. I've let a few 12-lbers go back into Bside, and now I can catch yours. smilesmile

Excellent fish Tulli! We went out today at about 1030 first fished around Blueberry, then we made are way over to Miller for a bit with not much luck at either spots, got a few bites nothing major. After that we headed back over by Van but far away from houses, set up in about 40 fow with it slopping down to 60 fow on all sides, managed to mark a few fish and even get some litght bites but wasn't able to stick anything except for the big old eel pout we got on a tip up. Going back out tomorrow around 9am haven't decided where to go but I think I am going to try a new spot.

Tulibee,

Nice laker! Way cool that you released it.....! Each year, most of my lakers over 30 inches are released. I keep a one or two for smoking.

Paul.

Nice fish, Jason.

Two of us were out today and there was a TON of laker activity. Big wind made it pretty tough on the eyes and cheeks, but man was it nice and warm, and the sun was out all afternoon.

We iced two fish in the vicinity of the Dead River and iced two more in the afternoon far up the North Arm, with the last one coming at the stroke of 5 p.m. Nothing big. Nice chunky 2-3 lbers, but it was nice to see so much activity. Many lookers, several that either hit and missed the lures or gave them shoulder or tail slaps. Not a single flag all day. All came on commonly used jigging lures.

None of the four had any clipped fins or healed partially clipped fins, so they were either stocked and the clipping didn't take, or they (or some of them) were naturally spawned. One was a very deep gold/black/bronze. A very handsome fish. And tasty, too! gringrin

Many parties out today, and in particular quite a few people near the mouth of the North Arm who were still there when I drove past at 5:30.

Sure was a sweet day to be out! Conditions are excellent. Four-wheel-drive takes you anywhere you want to go. smilesmile

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
