Out for just a few hours this morning and found a good batch of average sunfish and kept a dozen for dinner.

Started with Genz bugs and waxies, kind of timid biters, switched to a ratfinki w/waxies and still slow. Switched to a schrimpo and Wham Bam, that was the ticket.

Tossed back a few bigger ones and lots of smaller ones.

CrappieKid- If the "favorite lake" is where I met you that day, then I haven't even fished out there yet this season. I believe there are much more promising options this year. If only my GPS worked I might be able to remember what lake I was fishing on..... whistle

There are NO walleye in Shields Lake. Say it with me. And if there were, they would be just west of the boat ramp in the 3fow. Correct da_chise31? hmmm.

Put in an hour on the ice today. As soon as the sun started going down the feed bag was on! Iced a very fat 17 3/4" walleye, and brought home 3 crappies over 10 inches, one was 13.25.

I'll be setting up the portable tomorrow and putting in some quality time out there tomorrow.

Pink tipped with crappie minnow worked very well today.

As for that 'crack'...walked right over it, it was at best 1" wide.

Fished a local lake near St.Peter today that had a cove/bay that kept the wind out pretty well. Between me and 2 other buddies we iced 23 crappies(all 9' or bigger) and 4 sunfish. I figured with the mix of sunshine, warm temps, and wind the fish might be turned off. Clearly i was wrong. White swedish pimple tipped with red spikes were the ticket today!

Fished a local lake this morning and afternoon. Fished a.m. from 7:30 until about 9. Bad day for the panfish when they are lighting up plastics with no regard to their own well-being. Fish were everywhere in 8 FOW. Caught more fish than I could keep track of, mix of gills, crappies, and perch. Could have had a few crappies for dinner but the majority were under 9" for the other fish. All C&R.

As for the afternoon I fished with a good friend and fellow HSO member and we put the hurt on them. Fish relatively the same area, but a little shallower, 6-7FOW. Started slow around 3:30 with more gills than others. We needed a little meat to entice them to bite tonight. Once the dinner bell rang at 4 o'clock the crappies were darn near jumping out of the holes on their own. My friend brought in a few more fish than I did but I don't think there was much time in between fish for either of us. Much better size on the crappies tonight and we could have filled a pail with fish over the 10" mark. Trick was tonight I switched up to a 3/16 oz. Buckshot spoon tipped with minnow heads to try to keep the little buggers from getting it in their mouths, and it worked well. Action was non-stop until about 4:45 and then slowed down, guessing we iced well over 40-50 crappies during that period. We also swung and missed on 4 flags, couldn't tell you what the deal was there...Couldn't have asked for a better way to catch up with a good friend than a couple Nordeasts and some tight lines. All fish were C&R today, can't wait to get back out....tomorrow

i was out on washington on wednesday around the same time and i agree, it was slow. just a perch and a pumpkinseed, but 8 inches of clear ice.

i hit up french on tuesday, and was on a solid 6-7 inches of clear ice as well, the crack is well frozen over by now.

thanks for your reports, always nice to hear active chatter in weather like like it has been. hopefully we will be solid until march/april now smile

I hit a local lake this aft right after it was about done snowing.

One line was deadsticked with a venom bobber and the other was my trusty Lindy red rattlin Flyer.

In approx 2 hours, I iced 5 nice eyes from 14-19 inches and lost 2 in the hole and had a double but lost one. I also threw back 3 smaller ones.

I called them in with the Rattlin flyer, maybe called a fish killer and then hooked them with the deadstick. If the flyer did not get them, then the deadstick did but that Flyer called them in for sure.

Glo red was the go to color with the flyer and on the deadstick, I had a glo red #4 demon with a whole minner.

Had a few buddies out there and they also did pretty darn good on the eyes. Of the last 3 times and of those, 2 were for eyes with the Rattlin Flyer and the eyes popped both times. The other outing was last night on the Horseshoe chain for channels and that also went very well with the Lindy Rattlin Flyer.

Simply one awesome lure to say the least.

The ice may be questionable but the icing of fish has been the opposite.

Fished the river tonight banged my six kept 2 for dinner and I was shore fishing. The fish are right where I left them this fall. Harvey Lee you are correct on the rattlin flyer its a walleye magnet. I havent used it ice fishing yet but it was fun this fall on the river vertical jigging it with a piece of meat. I might be doing that again by Friday if this weather pattern keeps up

It is a fish magnet.

This may be one of the best lures that has come out for quite some time.

The newer Lindy slick jig is also a very good eye bait.

Finally made it out for most of today after a crazy week at work. WHEW!

Crappies were hungry and aggressive today from 8am to 2pm, and then they really slowed down.

I landed a decent walleye right after the crappie bite ended, and then everything really shut down. All fish caught on crappie minnows.

The ice was in excellent condition, 6 to 8" of ice everywhere I drilled.

I tried Duck the other day myself but all I caught were very small crappies and sunnies. Nothing worth keeping.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
