Those Salmo hornets are an awesone crank. I have one lake I fish that the eyes will really go for that crank.

I have been having good luck pulling walleyes almost every trip to a local lake, but the size hasn't been there. 6-11 fow.

-And pulling cranks over the tops of weeds has worked well too.

Haven't gotten a walleye deeper than 18' this year...though i have been looking.

Are you guys using the floating Hornets? I am new at walleye fishing and looking for any tips.

I use a crankbait that fits the depth of water I am targeting.

If I am trying to target a fish in less than 5ft of water yet still above the weeds, yes I will use a floating crank or a shallow running crank.

Again, if I am in water 9ft deep and the weeds are 4 ft up from the bottom, then I will use a crank that runs no deeper than 5ft at the most.

If the crank is running a few feet above the weeds, the eyes will come up and smack it.

If you are using a crank and still getting in the weed tops, run a very shallow running crank until you are not fouling in the weeds all the time. I will at times hit the weed tops and usually a quick snap of the rod tip will release the weeds.

I have used both the floating and the diving cranks depending on water depth.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was out today. The surface water temp was 80. I marked all kinds of fish in 10-15 FOW. Using a bottom bouncer orange spinner and a Gulp alive crawler I had a good day fishing. I would cut the crawler so my second hook of two would be sticking out behind the end of crawler. Just little stuff in the shallows (not including Bass).

The same as yesterday but at 10am the schools broke up and the bite slowed down when the wind shiffed,

Fished Shields this morning. Sheaphead central. Water was GREEN! As in glowing green on the east side, but just dark green on the west. Weeds are gone.

Mazaska this evening...in my buddies boat so we couldn't troll, but a few sunnies caught on slip bobbers on the south end in 10 FOW. Also turning very green. Weeds mostly gone.

Slow day today on French... We took the risk of live bait rigging/jigging for walleyes. We Marked a ton but nothing was bitting. We only had some fatheads and Gulp! but in any case it was beyond slow. Might head to north metro area this evening.

Made it out to my fav hole tonight. Started with the jig n crawler = negative. We moved to trolling old faithful. TONS o Hits, and 1 17" walter came home with me. Kyle got a white bass, and I suspect that that is what was hitting the Salmos and not hangin on.

All in all, what a beautiful night on the water!

12 FOW, 1.5mph seemed to be da ticket!

bunt2k - what size salmo? #4 or 5? Was out there the other night and managed 5 pike and a crappie on the fire tiger color #5. Nothing of any size though. Was marking a TON of fish 12-19ft on the NE shore, towards the 11 foot bar. I'm hoping to get out there tomorrow night.

I fished from my new Yak on Ballantyne today for about 3 hours and caught the biggest bass I've caught in this area ever. It was 21", although I don't know a weight, as I don't have a scale. I'm sure 3+ lbs though. The bass really seemed to like my shad raps out there.

A 21" largemouth will be much heavier than the modest 3+ lb estimate you gave her. I would say somewhere between 5-6lbs...nice job!!

I don't fish enough to know the weigh estimates. That makes me feel even better about it though! Especially knowing it was caught from a yak!

Got out last night for a few hours. Pulling hornets in 8-10 FOW the crappies were absolutely crushing them, but no walleyes. I came in right before the rain and wind hit. As I was cranking my boat up, the lake looked like mille lacs! 3-4 foot swells! I was pretty crazy to say the least. I think a lot of the guys out there just beached there boats and waited it out, I am guessing it only lasted 10 or 15 minutes. All in all it was a fun night of fishing.

The mid summer bite is still on! Trolling salmos and smaller raps on the outside of the weed-lines and over the top.

As a good friend of mine once stated on here...if ya arnt catching weeds, ya wont catch the walleye.

The gill bite as well seems to be doing just fine. Smaller profile jigs and crawlers on the outsides of the weeds, and vertical. Color seems to be a major player as well. I have found green and white to be my buddies during this humid stuff.

Keep poundin em! Lets here your reports!

I've been catching fish over the past couple weeks exactly the same ways you just mentioned. Trolling #4 floating Hornets can produce quite the mixed bag of fish. Moving approximately 1.8-2.1 mph along the weedline trying to stay near 9 f.o.w. Crappies, white bass, walleyes, big gills, sheephead... can all be had simply by trolling the edges and turns. Once you catch a fish it's worked to slow or stop and cast that area. Anchoring and vertically fishing the crappies, gills, walleyes, you name it...! can be very effective. Hot pink 1/32 oz collarless jighead with a crawler is getting bites for this guy!

Got home from fishing the other night and was reorganizing my "mancave" getting some clothing out for bowhunting and what not. All of the sudden I hear one of my rods set the hook into a huge 73lb. dogfish! Quite the ordeal ensued to say the least...Owe a big thanks to the local Police and Fire Dept. for the assist being I was home alone! Also a shout out to the Apple Valley 24 hr Vet Clinic and Ridges ER Hospital Staff... grin

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
