South Central MN Weekly Fishing Report, 1-13-09

Ice conditions remain good on our area lakes and the snow cover is still manageable in most cases. Generally speaking, there's 16 - 20" of ice and 2 - 8" of snow cover. On some lakes, walleye fishing has slowed to a crawl while others really heated up this past week. Focus on lakes in the area with large main lake points and/or flats and mid-lake structure in deeper water. Most walleyes are either being caught in 20+' of water or in less than 10' of water. JB Lure's Rattlin' Varmint, Lindy's Rattlin' Flyer Spoon and Northland Buckshot Spoons tipped with a small fathead minnow are still producing but most fish are responding to a more simple approach; plain hook and minnow under a float or rattle reel. The fish in shallow water remain focused on abrupt changes in either depth or bottom content or both but seem to be more focused on the harder bottom side of a transition than water depth. The pan fish bite that was fairly steady has slowed some over the past week but good opportunities still remain for those willing to do a little searching. Crappies, 'gills and perch are all using 4 - 8' flats with cover right now, so if you're a sight fisherman or woman, now's the time! The fish are responding well to plastics but Flutter Jigs from Fishing Minnesota's own Outdoor Pro Store are also producing. After the sun sets, look for some action to be occuring right under the ice. It also doesn't hurt to have a second line down with a plain hook and minnow under a float when targeting pan fish too. If fish are under you but not hitting your presentation that is being "worked", keep a close eye on your float because it's probably going to go down. Keep the lights dim and hang on!

I have been finding deep transition areas to be providing the most consistent walleye and perch action right now. As always it is a forage driven bite, some nights I will catch all small perch until sundown and then the walleyes will light up, but the nights I catch nice perch, the walleye bite is almost none exsistant!

The best area I have been in is a rock bar that tops out at 17' and drops too 22'

As for crappies, I have found a few roaming out in the main basins of lakes, not neccisarily the deepest holes, but out away from any structure. That said, I did share an afternoon with PDOGG last weekend targeting crappies in 5' in the middle of the day. However the most consistent fishing has been deeper.

Fished Washington this morning and it was slow also. Fish on the screen all morning but not much for takers. Set up in 12-14 ft. of water.

My buddy and I hit the ice yesterday afternoon and it was slow for us as well. Tried deep water for crappies and ended up icing a 28.75" walleye which was the highlight of our day. Talk about thick! She's still swimming. wink

Shortly after that we had a guy drill holes every 15' apart and did a complete circle around our house about 25' away from us. Needless to say the fish we were marking and catching were gone in an instant so we moved to other parts of the lake but drew a blank.

Nice fish! You have any pics of the big girl?

Unfortunately no. I left the camera at home thinking we'd just take pics of our panfish when we got home. Called my wife and told her the story. She asked if we took a pic and I said I left the camera at home. To which she reminded me that my cell phone has a camera! Never thought of that as I've never used the camera on my phone. Makes me sick to my stomach to realize it as my buddy caught it and it was the biggest 'eye of his life. sick We do have the memory and a dandy story to remember for the rest of our lives though.

Oh, how typical. You remember to bring your camera with and then dont catch anything worth taking a pic of. But when you forget the camera, then the big ones start hitting your line. Happens all the time. Just an expectation you have to get used to in fishing. Happened to me a few times this year while fishing for smallies. All you can do is smile. laugh

I was out friday, the only person fishing on this little lake, and the 8+" gill were active as ever in 20 FOW just below a 15' flat. Size 12 white & pink jig with red euros falling really slow has been the ticket.

Crappies started feeding aggressively in the same spot around 3:30 until dark, but they were the same size as the gills or smaller.

I'm heading out today with my son, he wants to give these gills a try and we'll update this report tonight or tomorrow.

OK so I took my son out to the same spot and depth I had been catching nice gills during the week and he out fished me with a single perch! There was a lot of activity on the lake near by and my son kept saying all the drilling and snowmobiles were scaring the fish away. I didn't understand it, sitting in the same spot, same depth and same time and the finder was blank almost the entire time. When fish did show they'd look and leave.

I hope I didn't scare my son off of ice fishing, he was really looking forward to catching some of the gills I had brought home just a couple of days earlier. Anyone else have this happen where you find a spot and it produces for you, then when you come back with someone else the area is the dead sea?

Every time. This happened to me last year.. I was up visiting my uncle in Aitkin so we took a trip down to Mille Lacs for the jumbo perch. There were five of us and we just killed them. Got back to work and bragged about it and convinced everyone to take a day off work. We got there and all we could catch is a few perch the size of my thumb. smile

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
