Spent 3 days on Leech Sat, Sun, Mon, leave Tuesday not sure if I will fish the am or not. Only keepers we got was from 8-830pm trolling raps #5 perch color 10-12 ft of water. It was amazing fished everywhere and everyone pretty much said the same. Weather was 80 degrees and no wind very sunny. Not ideal conditions for mid Sept but at least we got to fish as there has been many times I have come up here and spent more time in the cabin than in the boat. So I would recommend trolling raps for at least 30 min in the dark which is close to 7:50pm now and it got dark but we had our best luck then.

Lindy Rig and I were just up there Saturday afternoon though Monday around noon with a buddy of ours that has a place up there. Pretty much were on the water the entire time we were there other than from 10pm-7am, and an hour or two during the Vikes game.

We ended up with around 25 eye's, with Saturday afternoon and early night being good as well as Sunday morning before around 11:00 am. Sunday afternoon/night were pretty slow for us. Monday morning was ok with a few fish being boated as well. We ended up with around 6 under 14" that we let go, 12 that were keepable, and a number of them that were in the slot. Also a 27.5" that was released.

We pulled cranks 100% of the time, mostly #7 Shads in 11-15 FOW. We fished a number of mid-lake reefs/flats areas, and did little to no shoreline or point fishing. Trolling speeds were from 2.5mph-3.5mph.

I also got the chance to use the fishing line hook extraction method for the first time. I'm happy to say it worked well. If you have not watched the video on this.....I would advise it. Never thought it would happen to me until this 24" eye decided to hook me with a #7 shad!! Had I not watched that video things coule have been much more painful shocked

I was up on Leech last weekend with my 5 year old, we didn't run into very many eyes but the crappies were on fire. We did troll cranks Friday and Saturday night, on Friday my boy got his biggest eye to date, a nice fat 26.5". We got into some nice slabs, with 5 of them going 14" and 1.75lbs. Got another dozen or so in the 1.5lb range and the average size was about 12" and 1lb. We got about 80 of them in around 10 hours of fishing Saturday, and Sunday til 1pm. Some pics below. Hope to get up again in early October.

Going up to Leech on Friday the 25th for the weekend hoping for some pointer on the lake. I will be staying at Big Rock Resort on the southwest side. Probably going to try a little of everything i.e. trolling, drifting if possible, jig and minnow. Going to try Goose Flats, the stony points and a few other areas of interest. Any other helpful hints would be appreciated.

Stick style baits have worked best for me, size 9-11, something with gold, orange, or both. 5-10 fow after dark would be a good place to start.

Hemi311-

Thanks for the info. Your diagram explains it pretty well. Hopefully, I won't have to use it. But good to know just in case.

I had some ice in the bottom of my glass last night grin does that count? I bet it's a week away yet for safe ice.

Going to the cabin this week end, will post what I see next week.

We fished leech yesterday in the morning, there is about 7 inches of good ice in the southeast corner of the lake.We walked out anyway since it was the first trip of the year. The walleyes were tough to get to bite, one 14 and one lost at the hole but the perch bit pretty steady after the sun came up we did manage some decent eaters.Fished from 6:30-11.The lake was packing ice on heavy. At one point later in the morning it didnt stop making noise for 45 minutes.

Talked to a guy checking the ice today. 12 inches heading toward Sand Point. Guess there was a couple people that drove out there, but I wouldn't recommend that yet. 9 inches in Walker Bay.

Should be good this weekend. Rentals are going start putting houses out tomorrow.

Went out of Stony Point access on Saturday morning (fishing by 7:00 AM) in about 16 1/2 feet of water. approximately 14 inches of ice, nice and clear. Very little snow. Slick ice. Fished about 3 hours. One walleye 13.5", one cigar size, one nice jumbo perch, two small perch. Not good. Went out yesterday afternoon for the evening bite. Not good. Fished from 2:30 to about 5:30. No walleyes. One perch. Check others around me, not good. May have just been a bad day. However, lots of good ice and no heaves to speak of. I don't know what it is like over by Grand View. I believe Walker Bay has 9 - 10 inches of ice.

Was out Friday and Saturday. Perch fishing slow, but got enough for a meal. Tulibees were biting but we weren't targeting them so we moved whenever we found them. More walleyes than a guy could count in the evenings, but most were very, very small. Should be awesome fishing in a few years when they grow up!

I've read a bunch of posts here and cannot determine if there are plowed roads with truck traffic or is travel limited to ATVs/sleds, etc.? Can I pull my wheelhouse out with a the truck or must I use the ATV? Anyone willing to recommend an access point/resort with a decent road/access?

Thanks!!!

There are, for the most part, no plowed roads on Leech. There might be one or two on Walker Bay but I wouldn't count on it. After this snow, you are basically looking at snowmobile travel only. At least in the parts I was fishing.

Grand Vu Lodge on Pine Point has roads plowed out quite a ways and there are guys starting to carve branches off of the main roads. $6 a day or they have a winter pass for $50 I think is the price. IF you go off of the roads a wheeler with chains or a truck, chains are nice. Not too much slush yet, a few inches of water after you drill holes.

Plowed roads on the main lake are accessable through The Shores on Pine Point. It's $10 a day or $100 for the season. These guys will take care of you. There was even a mention of them in the Walker paper.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better

Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
