Hi folks. Just wondering what people have been using for perch/eyes off Pine/Stoney Point? Generally, how is the ice in those areas? I am guessing you can drive just about anywhere but of course avoid the heaves. Thank You.

Last two trips haven't hooked an eye on a jigging spoon all on set lines. We drove out to pelican island and there was 24-26 inches of ice everywhere we checked.

Hey all,

I will be heading up to Leech for a week long trip next week. I have never been on the water so i was looking for any sort of direction at all. We will be staying just north of Walker. focus mainly on bass but will do some walleye and panfish. Also going to attempt muskie, which have never fished for before. Not looking for exact spots, just patterns or ideas, any help would be greatly appriciated.

Leech is an awful lot of water. Have you consider hiring a guide for a 1/2 day or full day? It might really help with narrowing down your search and getting some well thought out advice.

Lots of the species you are talking about running around up there. Are you staying at a resort? If so, which one. That will help with narrowing down your search.

We are staying at the Shores of Leech lake. It is a resort just north of walker, in walker bay. Our main target is bass, But willing to fish for anything. Again, not looking to take anyone's hot spots. Just looking for any sort of patter, or something to point me into the right direction, it will be my first time on the water.

fish rice and reeds in Shingobee, Narrows, Steamboat Bay. frogs/horny toads/moss boss etc in the rice, jig and your faorite soft plastic in the reeds and into pockets in the rice. green pads will hold some fish as well. happy hunting and practice catch and release!

Anything going for crappies or sunnies on Girl lake? Up with the in-laws this week and trying to get them on fish. Doesn't seem like a great bass population so far too so any tips would be great! Thanks in advance!

Anyone find a good pattern over the weekend for Leech Lake Walleyes. Will be up there with my boys this weekend for their first big water experience!

Thanks for the input. From what I can tell I should be prepared with jigs, rigs, bottom bouncers, and raps. Almost all of my Leech experience is June. Early Septebmer will be new.

There will be a walleye and bass tournament on Leech this weekend, so if you plan on trying leeches you may want to call ahead, or bring then with, because they were in short supply last weekend.

So I've fished Leech in the summer multiple times but I've never ice fished it. I just bought a brand new sleeper house and I'm looking for some starting information for a weekend or two of family fishing with my wife and son. Since I'll be bringing a heavier wheelhouse, we won't be coming until we're well into drive-able ice.

My questions are... where's a good place to get onto the ice? Is it pretty much a perch bite by day and a walleye bite by evening? Does the main lake get fished quite a bit? I'm mostly familiar with places like Pine Pt, Ottertail, Duck, etc.

Any information you could lend would be greatly appreciated.

I think a great starting point would be the Sand Point area of Walker Bay. You access from Erickson's Landing the public landing on 371 north of Walker, it's over the bridge past Kabekona Bay. Fish the breaks 16-25 feet south of Sand Point and it usually is a sunup and sundown bite for walleyes. Perch fishing can be good in that area too.

Another good area is closer to town between first point and the public beach area in general, there are a lot of humps to fish some very deep (60 feet)and some about 30 feet. If you don't know those spots you may be out of luck and many will already have houses on them. The deeper humps can be really good but you run into the problem of killing a lot of fish even if you are careful reeling them in slowly. For me it's not worth it, killing so many fish.

I have not fished Walker Bay much. Mainly been out in the main basin of the lake of where I described - Pine, Duck, Ottertail, Goose. I can certainly read a map though! Thanks for the starting point. I really appreciate the help - even with just trying to figure out best spot(s) to get on the ice.

Thank you!

walker bay humps are over rated & over fished and the mortality rate is too high, not to mention that most humps are loaded with very small walleyes. But where ever you go it is a morning and evening window. There can be exceptions to this window sometimes but its pretty much the senario. Almost no possibility for perch on the bay humps also.

I would try right out in front of the public access (city park). Its always been my go to first ice spot for Walker bay. There is a real steep break not too far from shore. Find the break and fish that. About 20-24 FOW. Of course the bay isn't froze up yet, but it wont be long now smile

Agree with Joe - in early ice, the first break out from the park can by dynamite. Personally, I would avoid Sand Point...I think it's wildly overrated for ice fishing. If you can be mobile and punch lots of holes, Pine Point, Grand Vu flats, West Goose Flats, and on up past Hardwoods and into Sucker Bay can all be better for perch and walleye. At least in my experience, that's been the case. Your mileage may vary.

I kinda agree with thatoneguy about Sandpoint. Lots of guys set up on the mounds just to the east of there though. Or Id maybe stay south by cedar. Sand got alot of traffic late this summer and early fall as it was game on for walters at night. They were in there in the shallow sand chasing baitfish in warm water. I wouldnt count on it happening in winter. But who knows.

Hi Everyone,

Considering making a trip up to the area to get out for some early ice tip-up fishing and was wondering what the status is of the ice and snow amounts from this weekend's storm. Anyone willing to share what they have found? Walkable or ATV ice? Slush?, Ice thickness on area lakes?

Thanks

Steve

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
