2020 Leech Lake Fishing Reports - Hackensack, Longville, Walker MN Also

Recommended Posts

I went out. Messy messy messy, but doable. Went out of Shores. Caught mucho perch, but the fun part was sight fishing for wallys. I was fishing in 17' and kept seeing larger fish on the locator at 10' ft. So I brought one rig up to that depth. Saw a blip on the locater so I looked down the hole. There was an Eye staring at my fathead. I twitched it twice and wham... a wally on the ice. This happened 3 times! I cannot even begin to explain why they were suspended. I saw at least three others that turned around and left. Still shaking my head.

NO pout during the Eelpout Fest, but lots of walleyes. We caught fish all weekend in Walker Bay. Lots of fun too!

Not sure why this hasn't been updated in forever, but I was on Leech this last weekend. I didn't hammer them, but I was pretty happy with the fishing. For the 12-15 hours I spent chasing walleyes, plenty of that was running time. I caught 19 walleyes. I was only able to keep 4 all around 15" long, but had 7 slot fish to go along with 8 dinks probably 7-11"s. My biggest was a 26"er, which came in 8' of water at high noon. There was a decent chop at the time.

Caught the good fish on Duck point & then on that first underwater point NE of Ottertail Point, what's that called? It comes out near Ivan's Bay according to my map, it looks to be before the bog as far as I can understand. The point they were a little deeper & were still willing to bite when the lake was flat & it was hot. Seemed to be mostly all big fish though.

Fishing on Woman chain was relatively slow for us this weekend. A few eyes, small northerns, and some decent bass. All the eyes were caught on deep breaks

I am bringing my family up for a few days this weekend. We are staying by Longville and would like to see if the kids can catch a few fish. I used to come up years ago for 'eyes. With the kids, I am looking for any help to catch sunnies, perch or crappies, as well as the occasional walleye. I'm not asking for exact locations, just a hint of where I can keep the kids busy. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!!!

If you can get on Girl Lake I might be able to help you. Years ago when I lived in Longville, we would go out in front of Longville campground, to your right as you leave the boat ramp in Longville, and sit at the edge of the weedline/lillypads and catch crappies until we were tired. Usually in the evening but they are catchable during the day. Granted, like I say it was several years ago, but I can't believe they aren't there anymore. Hope this helps a little. Good Luck.

Just spent a week on Leech with ours and another family and had a great time, the weather was fantastic, not so muc for fishing but for family fun. Spent a couple hours each evening fishing and walleyes were okay, fished them 3 evenings and found some each evening, some rigging crawlers on mid lake drops. Our best bite came when the wind picked up on Tues eve on the rocks running husky's from 5-8', caught 6-7 in about an hour, all in the slot though, but still a blast. Even got a 48" ski at moonrise. Best color by far was glass perch husky size 8. Biggest eyes were 27 and 25 with most around 20 and a handful of keepers.

Spent three evenings chasing ski's to no avail, a couple follows and that was it. I think the sudden drop in temps might of had them off a tad as the water temp was down to 70... only fished the rocks with our limited time didn't run too far to find cabbage, maybe should have..?

Gonna be up in the leech lake area this weekend, but on a smaller chain of lakes. I'm wondering what the water temps are like and if the lakes are turning yet.

I'll be targeting muskie and i hope they haven't scattered due to turn over.

Definitely no turn over yet, you were right. The water temp was 70. Sunday we got skunked, 1 small rock bass and nothing else for the whole day! Monday was great, tons of northern, a few bass.

Only rumors of muskie though. One boat had a follow, another boat had a muskie break their bass lure in two. I'll head up again for 1 last try in a couple weeks.

I'll be up on Leech Lake for one day on Sat. 9/17. It's my first time fishing there, and was wondering if anyone has any certain spots I could try for walleyes and I might try for muskies too. If you have any tips on certain times, colors and lures that work better let me know.

Thanks in advance

Ryan

I wasn't on Leech this weekend much, but the two other area lakes were on the bite (for all species) was deep. 24-34 FOW. Find the steepest break you can, and fish it with either a jig and minnow/leech or a spinner rig w/minnow or leech. A friend did OK for walleyes on Leech Sunday using that same pattern.

Here's a good link for some muskie advice (locations/set ups) that the guys over in the muskie forum have been kind enough to share with me.

The main lake has some ice on it now! I Went yesterday out of pine point. We were fishing in 10FOW with about 7-8 inches of ice. I couldn't get to where I really wanted to go so it was slower than i hopped.

We caught 5 walleyes between 15-17, 2 pike and, 10 jumbos. Walker bay froze over tuesday night so a few more days and i will be hitting it up!

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
