Are people driving on the ice? Did the snow ruin driving with tons of slush? I was up in I falls and the snow is deep and the slush is everywhere? Some spots only had 5 inch of ice too. Last reports for leech where 10+ anything more recent?

Wow I didn’t think I would have to answer my own post but here is my report as I returned yesterday from 3 days on the ice.

Fishing was so so with most of the eyes in the 8-9" range a few keepers best fish was 23". The fishing was hard and you had to work for them. Ice is between 14-16” in our area with lots of snow on the ice, trucks where getting stuck if they tried to go off the roads. Because of the lack of roads It made it a little annoying when you wake up and a portable town has sprung up around your house and they take the area you have to park and then try to use the crapper we rented. Or better yet they plow off a parking lot 15 ft from your house for 2 hours and you catch no fish. The fishing was slower everywhere from reports. Hot lures where gold pimples and plain hooks under bobbers. They seemed to like the dead stick more than the jig but I think the jig was the attracter that brought them close enough to see the dead stick. Smaller fatheads and rainbows where best. We stayed with Gary Roerick and he was great and I would recommend him again he worked hard to make sure things stayed plowed as the roads where blowing shut and the shacks where clean and ready.

Thanks for the report Big Jeff!

What part of the lake were you on? Walker bay?

I'll be up on the main lake with a group of guys this weekend, hopefully the road/driving conditions improve between now and then....

I was with a group that fished last Friday (S. of Sand Point) and Saturday (out from Whipholt). Fishing was SLOW. Two walleyes in the 12" range and a 3 others around 8"-10". That was it for 5 guys. Some perch were around on Friday, but I could see on the camera that they were all pretty small. One northern bit off a line.

We had snowmobiles and portables, but didn't move around much as Friday was pretty brutal with the wind and we got a late start on Saturday.

Good luck everyone.

Going to fish Leech all Saturday and Sunday. Any advice to where I can catch some eyes. Will I be able to get out on the lake with the truck?

+1 on the walleye report and driving conditions. Dont need specifics just how deep of water and what type of techniques that have been effective

Was out of Pine point last weekend. Wide plowed main road, but very difficult to venture off the main trail. Lots of snow ( 20"), slush under that. Dangerous to drive your truck elsewhere.

Fish to be had though. Lots of small perch, but by sorting, limits available. Largest 13". pimmple & minnow head

I am going up Firiday for the weekend. You can get on at The shores at Pine Point for $10. If you talk to the guys there they will help you get a spot plowed to park a wheel house. They will take care of you, that is who I will be with.

I hear that no travel is advised on Walker Bay. I also heard they are suggesting removing your house if you have one out there. Heard there were some open holes (I would assume small). Lots of water under the snow even after our -20 nights we had last weekend. Two friends from up here took their houses off. I have not been up there recently, just passing on what I have heard.

Go out through The Shores at Pine Point. They have roads plowed and can help. It does cost $10 but that is a small price to pay, other wise you might not be able to drive on the ice.

How did everyone do out on Leech this last weekend? Any decent reports? Myself and 5 buddies are headed up on Friday for the weekend. We wil be staying in traders bay, and fishing with sleds and portables. Not looking

for secret spots!!..just wondering how the ice/travel is, and about what

depth to start looking for the elusive perlleye? ( perch and walleye)

about what times of the day are the hottest? Thank you for any info, as

this will be the only ice trip of the year due to kids / work! Will post

after we return from next weekend!

Was up there this past weekend, and fishing was very slow after the front moved in on Saturday. Even the small perch, and there are plenty of them in the depths we fished (13-16'), were difficult to entice. We fished near Goose Island along with a number of others. There was a lot of movement on Saturday which tells me that a lot of people were experiencing the same thing.

The roads out of The Shores at Pine Point are great; once you walk off the road into the snow and start drilling holes, you will be standing in slush. This was especially true in Walker's Bay as well.

If the weather turns as bitter cold as they are predicting, you might be better off waiting for the next warm front.

I was up this past weekend and didnt do too bad given the conditions.

We fished big rock reef the first night and struck out. Moved to a new spot the next night and caught a handfull of 15"ers along with a 23" and a 26"! not too bad for -18 degrees! Fished the same spot the next night and just like clock work we had a bucket of keepers.

Caught all fish between 430pm-8pm in 15fow in the muck.

Hope this helps!

Hello all! I'm from the Fargo Moorhead area and planning to make a trip to the Casino(northern lights) and do some fishing saturday and sunday. I don't have a snowmobile or a 4 wheeler, only 4x4. Not looking for specific spot to fish just lakes where travel is possible or good roads plowed. I know how slushy and sh***y its been to get around around Detroit Lakes so just don't wanna drive all the way to get stuck.

Thanks

The Shores at Pine Point. It will cost $10 to uses the access but they have about 6+ miles of roads plowed. They are trying to add to that when it is safe. If you want a spot plowed it will cost more but they will take care of you. There phone #'s are on their sign as you drive onto the lake.

it's a 110,000 acre lake. you might try a new spot if you're not on fish. just a thought.

Lakesbison, are you completely retarded or just half retarded? Leech lake has been

one of the hottest lakes in MN over the last 5 years! There are fish all over that

lake. All you had to do was look back over the past couple of weeks and read some of the better reports, or call one of the many bait shops in the area. This last past weekend was the first time in my life that I have Ice Fished Leech, I fish

it about 4 times a year out of a boat. This last weekend we kept 60 jumbos, 5 Walleye, a 4 lb Northern, and 2 big pout! That was only Friday night and all

day Saturday. and No, we did no have a guide, just read some of the recent reports and used my common knowledge! Was that your first time ever fishing?

C'MON MAN!

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!
    • leech~~
      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
