We are on the lake now. We drove out 3 miles and have had a consistant 16". Highbanks has a marked road too. The bite is slow. Weather is not cooperating. Windchill is -11 right now with a 15mph wind from the North. Pressure at 29.90 S.

if you are not catching fish specially though the night hrs nothing at all

i would move sounds like lake travel is pretty easy if you are 3 miles out there lots of humps try to if you have a gps/chip find one thats there s been no or very little travel..find one that has a steep break on it set up right on the break doesnt need to be a real big hump either

just thoght thats how we attack it up there and usally catch walleyes though the night...nothing coooler than hearing that rattle wheel start to tick real slow then faster and faster.....good luck

could also get you some northerns during day

It's nice to have an up to the moument reprot.

We typically fish farther to the west in the Zoomers area and have always done well on Eyes and Perch. I'm not sure if you can travel that far but if you can there's plenty of structure to choose from.

Good luck and keep the reports coming!

We came up on Tuesday and have tried a different spot each day. The first two were out farther in structure. Today we came back closer in 22' due to some reports we heard. We are getting some agressive smaller perch and one small pike. We did get four walleyes out deep, the smallest was 20", the biggest 24"...nice fish. Hoping for more of a day bite for my 11 year old coming tomorrow with grandpa. I'm blaming a 15+ mph wind and high pressure.

Ice conditions have held consistent through the warm spell with 16”-18” of good ice and minimal snow coverage 3 ½ miles NW of High Banks! Wheel houses and full-size trucks are welcome and able access most of the lake. The deep-water bite has not been producing and the best action is still in 15-17 FOW. There has been a good mid-day perch bite and some nice slot walleyes with occasional keepers. Picture worthy pike have been roaming the flats and break lines!

Moved in closer to the outside of a group of houses including some of Highbank's rentals. We are in 17'. Camera is down and seeing many small perch. We are trying to entice them with both minnow heads and waxies. Caught a couple, biggest was 7 or 8 inches. Smallest was about 3" smile. Temp is 7 above, pressure 29.93.

Pressure still 29.93 and temp is 8 degrees. Moved out to deeper water away from the large group. Hoping for the bite we had on Wednesday.

Hi Dave,

Just wondering if you made it out to that hump I fished a couple weeks ago?

My better half and I are gonna head up that way on Sunday, looks like a beautiful weekend to be on the ice.

Gonna try to get up there earlier in the day and start shallow for perch n gators, then catch the evening bite on our spot from last time.

I'll give you a shout before the weekend.

Brian

We were up all weekend, we did Ok, Got set up friday night 19fow and nothing over the night, then saturday we moved I was in 21fow and other buddies were in 24-25fow. Got 3 walleyes in the prime time while the girls ran to shore at High Banks. Then at 10pm the 12yr old got a 23" on a rattle reel. Sunday produced smaller perch, deeper seemed better that day, got 3 nice tullies and a couple pout, another couple eyes sunday night but nothing overnight headed out monday am. All in all a great time at High Banks!! super great place. Very little snow and plenty of ice with no slush so easy moving around.

jigglestick,

What's the chances of traveling to the Zoomers area with an F150?

we drove two diesels with v plows out there two days ago. no cracks or ridges. there is a ridge close to shore that cuts off third river but it causes us no pain.

we scratched a trail out there and back and did the same to the big island area so people have something to follow. I would not suggest leaving houses out there past the time you are going to stay. mother nature can turn sour in a short time. I'd say head out there and fish. just watch the forecast.

Does anyone have info regarding the landing by Sugar lake? Is it driveable with a car or truck? Any info would be great!

Thanks!

the walleye bite on the mid lake humps seems to be picking of from what I've seen and the reports coming in. typical 20 - 25 feet of water with a chub or shiner.

the perch were also hitting on the one I was on. nice keepers. lotta cutters mixed in with some slots which is about par.

there is a good perch bite in the bay by plug hat in 7 - 10 fow and there were some good reports from the west side as well.

the roads are almost not needed but they do help you find your way. Highbanks has roads scratched out to the big island area and to zoomers bar areas. easy to spread out so do your self a favor and get away from the crowd.

20 + inches of ice. we are seeing wheel houses and trucks of every size.

please use caution on the roads and keep your speeds down. this will help keep the roads from busting up. we don't need that headache.

it feels nice to not have to plow every inch of every place we want to go to this year.

keep your stick on the ice!

Just got back from the Big lake last night.Got on the lake thru Dennys at about 8pm on Thursday.Set up on little muskie no lookers or bites all night. We drove all the way to the humps on the north end Fishing was good on Friday with the sun out.35 jumbos and 2 walleyes 14 and a 16 1/2.All were caught in 30ftduring the day. Set the big house right on top of the hump 20ft Camera showed lots of little perch an shiners all over the top, I would have thought it was going to be a good night.prime time got us only 2 pout and a nothern. The moring bite was a 18" walleye. My partner was sick with the flu so we left at noon. Drove out thru High banks. The ice on that side of the lake was really busted up compaired to the south (still good ice)Mr jiggle keep the reports coming still a great time on Big Winne!

ET. I talked to Kim at high banks this afternoon. She said although they have 20inches of ice and roads plowed further out, the perch bite is still shallow. She said they had crews out scouting deep water and only found bourbut. We will be at high banks again the 7th and 8th of feb. Had a great time a couple weeks ago even though the temps were 20 below.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
