Lake Winnibigoshish Fishing Reports

If you think shiners are gonna be the ticket this year, you're missing out on what could be the best Winnie bite of your life. I'll be soaking leeches under a slip bobber in an undisclosed location smile

Went to Becker's today to get camper ready for sale. River is open (Cass and Winnie dams are wide open) and from trapper's landing road you can see open water out onto River Bar. Gonna be close, snow is still up to my knees in my lot. IMO will not be open, but for the resorts and all others who depend on the opener I hope it will be!!

Will two weeks of warmer weather be enough to open up Winni for the 11th? I plan on going up the middle of the following week through the 2nd week end, hoping the bite is on then.

with some warm rain and/or sustained winds, there's a decent chance it would

without either, there's a decent chance it wouldn't

I'm guessing the areas around the rivers and shallower water will be open - and should provide some great fishing. I doubt the ice will be completely out, though.

the water might be alittle to cold for those ....you might be fishing

with a leech ball.....lol ...Im a big fan of bobber fishing though

many good spots for that up there on the big lake and in the cutfoot

one spot in the cutfoot I'd say me and my buddie have taken 500-1000

eyes off it over the 30 yrs

Actually sold..but only because I need room for my new 40' park model. Staying at Becker's... we really like it there! Won't have my boat until mid-June. It's in New York Mills for rivet/floor/warranty work. Will not be out on opener, but may not be the only one unless ma nature speeds things up a bit.

Nope..haven't done tourneys for a couple years. Lots of OT at work. Been doubling down on payments. Boy does that add up in a hurry and take years off the loans! How was your season on Winnie last year? Was about half as productive as the season before for me. Lots of inconsistency with the bite, couldn't seem to pattern the fish on a regular basis.

Planning on ordering it from Hannay's Marine. Talked to them at the NW Sportshow. Seemed very nice and knowledgeable about their products. No dealers really anywhere closer for me. I am going to set up a test drive this summer some time.

Yes, they were bought out by Bass Cat. Looks like they have made some improvements to the boats as a result. I looked at the Larson tiller. It's big and wide, no doubt, but for me too much moolah to invest in a too new product. I'm wondering if the extra width may affect the performance. I'd have to drive one to decide. I'll have to take a ride in your rig. I won't have my boat back until June, but doesn't look like that's going to matter this season. Should be prime time when it's done.

Looks like Bowen's Lodge has started to reschedule opening weekend for it's guests. I'm guessing other resorts will also be facing the music and throwing in the towel soon. What a shame as many of these resorts rely on this big weekend to pay the bills.

Keeping our fingers crossed with the temps back up next week it might go quick the shorelines are breaking away if we could get some good rain and wind it might go.

Don't know what they do with deposits, etc. This is kind of unchartered territory for most resorts/people. Temps do look higher forecast for next week but may be too little too late for the opener...we'll wait and see. Either way I'll be setting up my new camper being delivered that day!!

Hey Crash, what do you think about saving a few spots on the river for the Hibbing guys. Your place is 20 minutes closer than we are. We'll bring coffee & doughnuts.

Has Third River Flowage opened up yet? Mike, feel free to stop by. No coffee and doughnuts, but we'll have plenty of gin and tonics!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
