Hit the big pond today with my son.

Great day out there with mild temps and minimal wind.

Landed on the jumbo's. Ended up bring 30 home along with 1 eater eye and 7 tullies. The boy also caught a bonus 24" eye.

Had my worst weekend all year for eyes. Got 2-1 dink and one 21". Fish all over just would not bite. On deep mud 30-35ft moved alot. Decided to hit some shallow rock on my way home and got a limit of 9-11 inchers in 2 hours on the SE side. Go figure. I guess it is that time of year to switch to focusing on perch?

heard last week people were getting them up shallow and tried it as well on a 17ft pile, not quite as jumbo, but a lot more fun. where i am on the se it looks like a ghost town as nearly everyone has headed deep. might be worth spending some more time up there next week!

Was up yesterday with my son and fished out of one of Appledoorn's houses. Saw lots of Perch and one big Northern on camera. We tried everything and had no luck. Begining to wonder if the camera is keeping the fish from biting. I was also using a flasher and seeing fish but no takers. Paul stopped out to see how things were going, what a nice guy and clean house! Over all no fish, but had a great day with my son.

Fished out of Terrys on Saturday. Caught a handful of perch and one tuli. Set up in 24 fow in the morning and 31 mid day. Was tough going to get them to actually bite. Fish would follow my jig up but never bite. Sitched jigs about 10 times. Wishing I would of had some waxies. We were using fat heads and crappie minnows. Mainly crappie minnows.

We didn't do well at all yesterday either. Must have drilled more than 50 holes looking for Tullibees on the flats, and only caught 1. Seemed like last winter was a better Tullibee bite, at least for us it was.

Waxies helped a little, but it was still tough out there.

Was on Shermans Friday thru Saturday morning, fished in the house, outside up and down the edge and could only get some marginal size perch. Moved to 8 mile Sat Morning and fished thru noon Sunday. Saturday was real slow...lots of fish all over and nothing wanted to bite. Was out moving up and down the edge and out into 34' and struggled to get a few. Even on the camera, they would come up and look at the jig and turn away...the tulies would just swim by not interested.

Sunday morning, it was a different picture, the perch were more aggressive and the tulies would circle around and go after the jig. I was using small rattlin flyers and then switched to a small tungston jig with waxies. The perch that did hit sunday were still smallish 7-9".

I was on the edge of 8 mile with the wheel house, 27' on one end and 31 on the other and I had the camera on the upper side looking over the edge and all after noon I could see Tulies swimming along the break but they wouldn't even look at my lures saturday...Sunday was a lot funner watching those things come thru and then do 3 doughnuts and then finnaly taking a swing at the jig. Ended up keeping 6 of them for a friend that is going to smoke 'em.

Both days I was litterally seeing 6-10 tulies on the camera every 10-15 minutes.

I think I may have seen you out there. Were you in the wheelhouse with the 2 dogs outside?

Was on the mud Saturday with my son ended up with one eye at 17 inches and 11 perch had a real good bite and missed a lot and the bummer of the day was me dropping a 14 plus inch perch in the whole biggest one I've ever seen in person I even shed a tear. Well thats what I get for seeing it and placing it on the wall before its on the ice. Found the best bite on a steep wall half way up bc they wouldn't bite on top or in bottom but half way up I did real good threw lots of tullies back to.

Had a day off today from the rentals and headed over to the big pond. Three of us fished 12-6pm off of Garrison Sports road. We went to the end of the road and found a good looking spot on one of the flats. Drilled a couple lines of holes going from just off the flat heading up the drop. Found active perch right at the base of the drop. Northland Buckshots tipped with minnowheads and 1/16th Forage minnows worked the best. Ended the day catching around 50 perch with 17 being jumbos, dozen tullies and a couple keepers walleyes.

Is anyone willig to give me a general spot where they are doing well? Whether its a lot of perch, eyes or Tulibees? Ive been up there about 5 times and only have about 8 perch. I dont need to know exactly where you are but a general area...maybe what roads your off of or go out on depth or whatever. My dad and i are having a not so good season and with my dads health i dont know how much longer we have to fish together so i want to go out and have as much fun as possible. So any help would be much appreciated!

no real magic spot....there are fish all over the lake, just have to go find them. go out of lybacks or terrys for a shot at a perch/tullie combo, give appledorns road system a try for some eyes and perch. reread the posts for more depth and presentation specifics, and if you want a lot of action, be prepared to move and drill. sorry, but, simply too big of a lake with too many variables to say where the fish will be biting when you happen to go out next.

go to terrys on the west side,

pay 10$ for the road and go to the 7 mile flat

and set your [PoorWordUsage] down in the center of the group of people,

pearch, tullies and eye to be had.

I just got back yesterday, there were fish showing on the vexlar, but no takers except 1 9.5" perch. I was 30 fow, and it was cold outside -25 degrees. Hopefully this warm front will turn them on like i heard it did last weekend.

Came back last night from Mille lacs. Drilled a lot of holes but not a lot of fish. set up on popes in 20 fow tried the graveyard in 30 fow hit the tullie hole ppl all around us were slammen em we couldn't manage to get anything. Dont know what we were doing wrong. At the end of the day we set up in some gravel in about 22 fow saw a bunch of real nice jumbos on the camera and a few nice eyes but couldn't get anything to bite. After about 10 hrs of fishing and 2 dink perch we called it a night. Back to clearwater, at least I know where to find fish out there. oh yea bring an extention

If your going up to Mille Lacs, bring the extention and don't forget to scour out the shavings or you might have to fight a stuck auger.

The wife and I went up yesterday and we had a blast. Couple hours in the portable, a couple hours in the casino and back to the portable for the evening bite.

First round, wife gets 2 keeper perch before I even had my line down. I did manage to trick a thumb sized perch into biting and I landed him to! I also got a nice fat tullibee which I let go.

In the two hour interlude at the casino, wife wins $300.00, I left there pigeon toed, shoulders slumped and head hanging!

Back at the house, she got her line down and before I could get mine down, she had a gi-normus perch up in the hole. The thing got off and got wedged in the hole and I scooped it out. While we were trying to get some pics and video of the fish, it danged near got away for a second and a third time, so I threw it in the bucket. No sooner did that one go 'clunk' in the bucket then she informs me...."I've got another one going!" She hauls in another hog, just a little smaller then the first. When we measured them at home, we got 12 1/2 and 12 inches.

Again, as far as the perch go, all I could manage was a thumb sized scrapper. But I did nail another pretty good sized tullibee and a big fat walleye! Both are back swimmin. I wear a 10 1/2 sneaker and it was a tad longer then my two feet toe to heel and really fat and round....it was great, but the camera memory card was full from taking the videos. Oh well, it isn't the first nice walleye I have ever caught and it won't be the last....fun trip!

Any flat will do. They all seem to have them. Just pick a spot with a steep drop off and drill next to it. Just keep drilling. Once you find a tullibee, drill more in that area and hole hop. When you find a school you'll have more action than you can handle. Just make sure to keep a lure down so they stay in the area. Don't let the hole get empty. Also, they are a fragile fish, so plan on keeping everything you catch.

Also, don't be shy when you're out there, stop and talk to other fisherman. Many of them don't want tullibees and will gladly give you info on where they are, especially if you tell them that is the only fish you plan to target.

Went out to 7 mile yesterday and got 8 nice jumbos 3 good walleyes 15"-17" and 1 crappie 14 1/2 " This was the first crappie I have ever caught on the lake. so I told it to go breed and come back and raise her family on the flat. All fish were caught from 2 holes in side the porty in about 34 fow. Good luck and see you on the water KF

Kingfish,

We were out there as well, lot of sniffers, couldn't get anything to bite. What were you using? going out today, see if our luck can change. We were on the base, 34 ft, also drilled some holes up the slope to the top at 24 feet. That was from 3:00 to 6:30.

Earlier in the day my daughters were out, were near Horshoe Flat, again, tried about 32 - 33 FOW, I caught one tullie, couldn't get any for the girls. Pretty frustrated. Punched a whole bunch of holes. Had waxies, euro, and minnow heads.

Always looking for ideas. Like I said, taking the girls out today to see if we can have better luck.

My dad was up on Saturday on the east side, I think around 3-mile, and had a really slow time of it. Only iced one perch worth keeping and a dink walleye that he threw back. I think he said he was using minnows.

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
