I was out on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and Friday last week and only had 2 fish to show for it. Was on Curly's, seguchie and shermans flats between 24' and 33' and saw lots of small perch and eyes on the camera. The larger eyes that I saw come thru never batted an eye at my lures, they just kept on swimmin'. The one I did catch I almost had to bonk him in the head and then he turned around and hit my jig.

Very slow week imo.

my 2 sons went out yesterday with their grandpa and managed 5 keeper eyes, 2 perch, and 5 tullies. one of the perch was a 13" fatty. my son just about [PoorWordUsage] his pants when he brought that one threw the hole. marked quite a few fish, but only a few takers.

Fished out of Appledoorns Sunday night. Fishing was very poor. Had a cameral down in the daylight hours and never saw a fish. Caught one 13 inch walleye and had two other bites.

Long time listener... First time caller. Heading to Mille Lacs on Thursday - Saturday for a typical Mr. Iceman Freeze fest. Haven't had much luck on the W. side Mud flats but I'm partial to Terry's access for some reason... must be the Natty's Ice Light he gives me every once in awhile or something? Been hearing descent things about the E. side gravel in 4 / 5 mile areas in deeper waters. Didn't have much luck there 3 weeks ago though. Though the temps are dropping and fishing may be hurtin' I like to hunt and prove to myself that I'm a worthy fisherman! Any help / advise on cold weather eye hunting / recent advise on Mud Flats on the West vs. Gravel on the East... etc... would be much appreciated. Also, anyone know of Terry's road conditions? Heard there was a large crack limiting travel to 9 mile / or the small flats in that area?

That crack will not be a proplem,

last week it was only a foot wide.

and by now froze solid

One should always expect a crack to cross to get to the various mudflats, no matter where you leave shore from. Using a bridge is a must do to get to the middle of the lake such as 9 mile. One crack might freeze solid as you say, but another will form with every temperature change, no doubt.

We left the shack at 9 last night. Couldn't even see a walleye on the camera. Normally we see them all over. We did have some tullibees and jumbos under is late in the afternoon after moving the shack deeper off the break. A few nipped at our jigs but they wouldn't commit. I'm thinking the cold front wasn't helping matteirs.

fished the flats yesterday and this morning fished in 25 to 36 ft marked alot of lookers shallow but no bites. Moved deeper int the afternoon yesterday and quickly started to catch smallish perch and tulibee's and a lot more tulibee's. after a day a half 0 walleyes, 15 perch (8 keeper perch), and over 100 tullie's caught. I think I am happy for the conservitive limit on the lake. Nice to see them back like this.

Went to the end of Mac's Twin Bay's road. Fished in 30ft of water. Caught 5 walleyes that were 5inches long and 1 13inch and 2 jumbo perch. Pretty slow. Might have done a little better and moved to some new locations but the big buddy heater wasn't staying lit for some reason. Had to use a grill to heat us up. Now the portable smells like old hot dogs hahaha. Wish we could have moved around a little more and targeted some of those Tullibees.

With these extreme cold tempaeratures I decided to just have some fun catching fish of any kind, so I spent my weekend Perch and Tullibee fishing, caught a few walleye by accident as well. The bite for the Tullibee has truly been amazing for the last couple of years. I would recommend picking a big mud flat then go off the edge into 34-35 feet and fishing for tullibees and Perch, it is the best thing going during these types of conditions. The advantage of this in the cold weather is generally you can just drill two holes get in the house, get the heater going and fish, no hole hopping around is neccessary. It's a great way to spend a day with kid, non stop action and always fish on the screen to keep their attention.

I went out of Terry's Boat Harbor on sun. we went all the way out to 7 mile to the spot I posted the cords for last year and there is a large ice heave that kept me from getting right on the spot but I just fallowed the drop back to where I could get and fished there. and had another great day of tullie fishing with some nice perch mixed in I think both the tullies and the perch were bigger on average then what I got there last year. Small perch colored jigging spoons worked best for us tiped with both larva and minnow heads.Gotta go check the smoker keep your line wet and see you on the water KF

Jerry,

Wondering where you had luck finding perch? Coming up this weekend and was planning on targeting some jumbos. Had decent luck early January off of Liberty Beach. Was planning to go back there unless I hear otherwise.

mr. lunker, pat was spot on. we fished about 30 yds off the break of the flat. And he's right you really don't have to move around, which was really nice considering the temps. The tullies bit anytime of day or night, we went to bed at midnight and were still catching them then.

Fished Sat PM to Sun PM out on the mid-lake flats. Got a few nice perch and a few walleyes (once the barometer started to drop on Sunday) - nothing big. Had rattles down all night and got nothing. The tullies were crazy - we actually left at 4PM because they were so pesky. Good thing because the wind was blowing the snow and it was tough to see the road, would have been challenging in the dark. Would have kept some tullies for the smoker but I still haven't smoked the 5 that are still in the freezer from last year!! Good Luck!

Wheres walter - I was out on the flats on sunday all day and stayed until a little after dark. Caught 10 perch and 1 24" eye and a bunch of tullies ourselves. You are correct on the blowing snow, we had to drive a long ways on the roads to get off the lake and it was pretty bad. The roads were blown shut and we were busting drifts the whole way in and could only see a few yards in front of the truck. Wind was crazy, bent poles on my portable from it being pounded on all day. Still at least caught a few.

I was using a gold buckshot and fatty head. seen alot of walleyes on the camera, but most wouldnt bite. I will be heading back up tomorrow i think. 3 till 530 was the best bite of the day.

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣

Wow, 600 bucks for a battery powered lawn mower?  Guess I didn't realize they costed that much.   I assume most people now are using battery augers in the winter.  I remember when they first came out everyone thought they were a joke.  Things sure have changed on that front.  I hardly see anyone using a gas auger anymore.   The selling point, at least for me, would be to avoid having to do any engine maintenance.  Small 2 stroke motors are a pain in the rear to maintain, and unreliable at best.

I'll bet she's better at it!!!!
