I'm heading up to Upper Red on Thursday with my family for our annual fishing trip to Red. I'm hoping the weather will be stable and the fish will be biting by then. Anyone have a new report from this past Memorial day weekend?

The weather report looks like the wind should be pretty calm after today for the remainder of the week. I sure hope we get a few days of good weather as I am heading up to Red with my dad and brother on Thursday. I can't wait.

Rough fishing on Saturday, water was all kinds of churned up. Got a few taps and left after a couple hours with the skunk. Worst Red trip I've ever had, but considering I've been roundly successful every other time I'll gladly take my medicine. Hopefully the winds lay down for you, today that's definitely not the case.

We fished for a couple of hours Saturday and ended up with 4 keepers. We released several small ones and lost a couple that looked like keepers but got off before we could net them. We were out in about 10 feet of water and drifted a jig and minnow. Everything we caught was under 17 inches.

Fished most of the day Saturday. 3 Sheep head and 1 Gator @ 36 inches. Most of the morning we were rigging and jigging with shiners. I switched to jigging fat heads mid afternoon and hooked up with a feisty sheep head. Other guys switched to fat's and also hooked one a piece. Snag turned out to be 36 inch gator. Most others I spoke with out on the lake claimed nothing but goose eggs. Sorry if I was bothering anyone... blushI'm old.

Launched on the south side and worked our way west to short of the line and proceeded back east around to the north side. Lightning gave us the green light to head back south about 8:30pm. It was a very enjoyable day fishing with my son's. There first time on Red in a boat. They won't forget how Red handed them a licking. I took some ibuprofen before going to bed so I wasn't to bad Sunday. I love that lake and the people up there...

Yeah the fishing was very slow on Saturday. Lake was all whipped up from the insane wind on Friday. Might be better when you get there, but the fishing has been very slow by Upper Red standards most of the season so far.

water temps were still at 59 degrees on memorial day. the fish are there. its Red Lake and that means on light wind days your fishing WILL be better. IF wind wips for a couple days and a cold front moves through you will not do so hot. for example we fished last thursday (24th) and it was calm and stable and it was lights out fishing. WInds wipped all day friday and cold front moved through Saturday with more wind and fishing sucked for the rest of our 5 day stay. that's how Red works. If you get a week of colm winds it will be like taking candy from a baby.

You guys do see the pattern correct? Pre wind the fish bite, post wind they do not. So it is and so it goes.

Now that is solid information.

Did fairly well yesterday afternoon. Caught our limit within a couple of hours, plus a couple others that we threw back. We were using nightcrawlers, and chartreuse lindys and spinners.

Fished Red yesterday, stayed at Westwind. Got our limit for four of us. All were the smaller sized fish (13.5 to 14 inches) on the first break on the east shore. Just had to keep plugging away. Caught only three fish over 16 inches - it seemed like that is what was biting in that area yesterday Fished jigs and minnows - fats were better than shiners - probably due to fish size.

My sons and I launched out of the south-side on Saturday. First and only walleye was hooked up at 10:00 AM, 15 and a half inches.

5 beautiful sheep-head and 2 northern, 17" and 37". Jigging, Rigging spinners and raps, lead-core and raps. Walleye came off of jig tipped with chub and all the rest of fish came from lead-core rigs. We left the lake at 10:00 PM.

Thirteen and a half hours in the boat, with that southeast breeze has left my calves feeling like wood.

On a side-note, we were approached and inspected by 2 agents representing the DNR. I will describe our encounter not only as I saw it, but my one sons view also. My son is in law enforcement.

One agent was of the sort that all could hope for if approached. He was professional, respectful and courteous, an example of what one would expect. The other agent, well, not so much for respect and courtesy. His obnoxious demanding tone stripped away any professionalism he may have had.

After our short compliant inspection, and the agents departing, I held silent and waited for my sons to see what there reaction would be. I'd like to believe that out of what I have taught them by example, they were silent until I asked them of there thoughts of this experience. They were both at a loss for words until the one who is in enforcement inquired, "why the good cop bad cop routine"? We laughed and shared many hypothetical situations as to why some people need to puff up.

O.K, I've been approached many times over my 57 years by game wardens/CO's. This is only the second time I remember a representative of the state that has shown less then digestible behavior. On several occasions over the years I have shared a hot cup of coffee with CO's while they have warmed themselves within my ice shelter. I'm not bashing or whining, just sharing our experience.

I did ask the CO's if they noticed anyone doing any good fishing. The one fella replied we were doing the best out of the one's they had checked. I could of swore he winked when he told me this... He really was a nice guy.

I love this lake and area and hope to be back soon for the fall run.

The wife and I made it out this afternoon, we found an average of about 5'' of ice where we were. Looked pretty good the only thing that made me nervous were the cracks that had opened with the last heavy winds. These cracks were noticable until the snow came towards dusk now they are covered and some cracks only have 1-2''(will freeze quick with these cold temps though). So one still has to be very careful! We did find a few fish and ended the night with 3 nice keepers and 2 lost right at the hole, as well as a number of perch. We graphed a lot of fish, tried a lot of various lures, but the dead stick with a plain hook tipped with a minnow seemed to work the best. We were set up in 7.5 FoW.

I'm not sure if the resorts are allowing people out or not, so I highly recommend calling the resort of which you plan to go out of. I was on the Eastern shore.

Tyler, your report from yesterday states you found an average of 5 inches of ice, in 7.5 feet of water, while many other ice reports are saying much less ice, and even skim ice still today?

I understand completely that ice can be really variable from spot to spot, but perhaps you could share just a general area you were at? Southeast, middle-east, northeast? Within a few miles north or south of any particular land mark or resort?

I'm thinking of driving over early this week and just walking out for an afternoon. Temps are pretty cold today, but that wind is blowing pretty good as well. If I'm going to make the drive, I'd really like to know an area I'll be reasonably safe walking out. Thanks.

I tried the same area tonight with about the same results, we did gain another inch so the spot I've been fishing is right at 6'' of ice.(I'm sure this varies in different areas so be safe). We didn't graph as many fish tonight but unlike last night the fish we did graph came in slamming the bait. The plan for tomorrow is either head out a bit deeper or try a whole new area in general. Sounds like the wind is suppose to stay down which will be a treat from the last two evenings.

Canopy Sam, I've been going out of my parents access which is just north of West Wind. I'm not sure if West Wind or any of the other resorts on the Eastern shore are allowing people out or not, your best bet would be to call.

Thanks brother! Appreciate the intel. Looks like you guys are icing some nice fish.

I may drive over tomorrow and do a little snooping around. Surprised the wind we've had didn't heave the ice and tear things up a bit. She was blowing pretty hard over here in TRF. AND COLD! Ooofff.

Fairly calm outside now, and really cold. Should be making good ice fast now.

My bro is fishing out of Hillmans. Didnt do that good yesterday. Then spent the night out there and got a few. Him and a friend did real good towards evening tonight. Plain hook and a fathead right on the bottom. 5-10 inches of ice. Be very careful. and put down the booze and lights for the finicky bite. Water a little dirty. Not much action during the day.

From what I have been hearing guy have been doing good from the south and east shores in that 7-10 feet range. Our guys did good on the south shore with pink and white spoons and I am sure you will get quite a few reports come Monday. There are still some soft spots out there so use caution and check in with the resort owners. Good luck I am sure some guys will chime in and share some intel.

I was up Wed-Thurs last week. We fished out of Hillmans on Wed and only caught 2 and missed a couple more. We were in 7ft. A deadstick was the only rod with any bites. On thursday we fished out of rogers. We were in 9 ft. We caught 9 fish. Only caught 2 during the day, then about an hour before dark it was a hot bite till we had to leave at 5:30pm, so I'm not sure how late the bite goes. Only caught 2 fish jigging in 2 days, the rest were on a deadstick. The hot jigs under the bobber were an orange forage minnow with a fathead and one of those clear glass jigs with a red stripe in the middle. Both the fish that were caught jigging came on a blue lindy flyer with a whole fathead. There were lots of pesky dinky perch. Good luck.

Fished Saturday from 10:00 AM to Sunday 3:00 PM out of Rogers in about 7 1/2 ft of water. Hottest bite was from 4-6 pm and 3-6 AM. A plain pink jig was the hottest rig in our shack. Caught a couple jigging but most came on rattle reels.

Does anyone have any reports for the pike fishing right now? Not sure if its the right time for em yet on UPR never done hoping to grab some ciscos on the way up friday only if it would be worth it?

Lots of pike showing up. Just make sure your cisco/smelt are certified VHS free and labeled as they will be checked.

I normally have better luck with live suckers, especially when the water is cloudy like we are seeing right now.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
