Just got back from a day trip to Red. Fishing was great. 30 or so for 2 guys in 5 hours fishing. Biggest was 20". Went out of WW in 12 ft. Bit spoons and dead sticks about equally.

My wife and I just got back from Red and had a very successful day and a half. We fished out of Beacon Harbor, stayed in the motel and used a fish house. We caught probably 30 fish and missed probably 1/2 that many. Dean and Debbie are great at Beacon Harbor and very helpful. The rooms and fish house was very clean. Will be back for more fun at Upper Red Lake and Beacon Harbor.

Date: 12-29-2011

Weather: Clear Skies, light winds, 11F at 0800 14F at 1800

Time: 0800-1800

Access: West Wind Resort

Depth: 8.5ft and 10.5ft

Ice thickness: 15.5in and 17.75in

Snow cover: less than 1in with small drifts

Bait: Fathead Minnows

Lures: Red Glow Lindy Flyer, plain red hook and bobber

Largest Fish: 19.5 in (2)

Fish Kept: 8 (13in-15.75in)

It was VERY slow for us as we missed 2 and caught 1 that was too big from 8-12. As JohnnyP mentioned a few days ago stay quiet, so we decided to move a little deeper and a ways off the road where I had a GPS coordinate from a few years ago so we did just that and moved over a 1/4 mile from anyone. That was the ticket! 10.5 FOW and at 1230 we were on the fish. We caught/released/missed probably 10-15 fish in the next 45 minutes. Then it slowed down for a few hours with a fish here and there that was too big or too small with just a couple "keepers" but right around sunset the bite lit up. We both finished with our limits and one bonus 9.5 inch perch. I did find it very unusual that we caught and released 10 or so walleyes less than 12 inches long as I haven't heard much for people catching small ones(at least the future looks promising).

Thanks to Outdoor Authority for putting us on the fish!! WOW 3 days out on Red out of Rogers. For 7 guys we caught 245 Fish. Unreal. Best walleye fishing Ive ever had on the ice in my life. 23" was the biggest & probably 75% of the total were in the upper side of the slot.

The lake had a little hiccup or just decided to show us she can shut down if she wants. We had some tough fishing for a day and a half, now today its back on like Donky Kong.

Im up on the lake right now as I'm typing this. So far fishing has been great. We are in about 9' of water out of West Wind. We got up last night and had a couple of drinks and pulled out onto the ice at about 1030pm. By 11 we had our first fish, a 22" eye. Caught with a forage minnow and fathead. We caught 3 more over night and roughly 30 today. Most walleyes were over slot and had to go back, but we've been slaying the perch, 9"-10"ers. There are 3 of us and I think we have 2 limits of walleyes in the bucket right now.

The winds are picking up now and its not fun to go outside right now, but its nice and warm in the wheelhouse.

Happy New Year!

So it seems that staying away from people seems to be the ticket. I fished red thursday friday and did pretty well. 30-50 eyes and 1 pike between two houses. About 16 inches of ice and didnt have a problem pulling a 20 wheel house out with a 3/4 ton pickup. LOTS OF FUN!!!!

Had a great weekend on the lake!

The Misses and I, along with the beagles, were lucky enough to fish Friday through today. Our numbers weren't anywhere near some of the guys from earlier in the week, but I certainly have nothing to complain about wink

Friday and Saturday we did well, even caught a nice crappie for the wall! I can't believe we used to just fillet them babies up cry It was a treat to say the least and the highlight of the trip!

Sunday the fishing slowed way down, though we did catch a half dozen biggen eyes cool It is a lot easier to let big ones go than to fillet keepers anyway smile

The weather was beautiful, then on Saturday afternoon Red Lake showed her true self. Near whiteout conditions, but the fish still bit throughout the night.

Here's a bunch of pic's, I hope you guys enjoy!

A big thanks to West Wind, you guys are great!

I fished Red on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Thursday was really good, my catch rate was phenominal. I went up Saturday afternoon to kind of prefish as I was bringing my bro in law from cities on Sunday. I started out slow as the snow was coming down I really had to work to get the fish to bite. I think it calmed down around 330 and the bite picked up. I caught 8 fish over the next hour.

Sunday was a beast! We got out around 730. The wind was blowing so hard that we did not try to set the portable up. We hunkered down on the side of the truck. We caught just our limits by 11 and pulled the plug. What a way to kick off the new year. What is amazing is that even with such horrid conditions a guy can eek out a few walleyes.

Terrific pics guys. Love that last walleye shot B-man!

Fishing a small lake south of Red we absolutely pounded walleyes over the weekend. Solunar tables indicated best bite of the month, and they didn't disappoint - despite the wild weather!

I honestly figured the weekend would be a bust with the huge barometric pressure changes, but the fishing calendar proved me wrong.

Fished Fri Night thru Sunday afternoon with average results. Around 30 walleyes most(maybe 2/3rds)in the slot. 5 fish 22-23" one being the fattest I ever seen. Half dozen perch- one 11.5". Fished 8.5' one day 12.5' the next with similar results. Went out of Hillmans but never found Johnnys "absolute insanity" ...maybe next time!;) Had the family along and all had fun! Could have done without the wind on Sunday! Will be back soon for more good times!

What seems to be the hot side of the lake. I fished out of Rogers last week and did ok. Is that side of the lake still producing?

Two of us did a 24 hr sleeper rental from Bear Paw 12pm tuesday - 12pm wednesday. On the way up we had heard the rumors the bite had suddenly slowed drasticly. We were pleasantly surprised with our results. We kept track with a pen and paper and ended up with a total of 34. Nice size mix with several over 20" but a lot of keepers mixed in. The afternoon was our best run, with fish biting off and on all night, and the morning being our slowest stretch. Jigging easily out produced the set lines.

How deep were you guys fishing?

Just trying to see if the night bite is better in the shallower end or a little deeper. I'm heading up in the morning for a few days.

Two days last week I fished in shallow early and late and did well. was in 7.5 feet until 11ish then moved out to 11 feet for the heart of the day. Then I moved back in to my shallower holes at 3ish. Seems logical as they are supposed to feed up shallow early and late. It all depends though on how nice of a day it is and if I have the energy to pack up and move. Alot of times I dont get out until noon or 1 and I will just go park out beyond 10 feet and call it good.

Muleshack -- we were in 14 ft. We caught about 4 or 5 on rattle reels during the night. I couldn't sleep so I got up at about 2am and turned on the vex and glowed up a red Lindy rattl'n flyer -- ended up catching 3 fish in about 45 minutes doing that and the bobbers never moved the entire time. There were definitely fish out and about feeding during the middle of the night.

No, Hillmans is right on the highway in beautiful downtown Waskish:) It's resort-ish... A bait shot on the right and the ice road heads out on the lake to the left. Can't miss it.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
