Warren and Doug will be leaving this morning back to chicago with there 4 a piece. Then it will be all quiet here untel next weekend. We did well fishing as they were hammering the spinners

I think this was the least traffic we have seen on opener.

Doug was new to walleye fishing and the first fish he got was a 18 incher. I ask him if he new how to hold a walleye so warren could snap a pic and he held it like a large mouth bass and proceeded to get a major gash in his finger. All the guys here did well but had to work for the smaller fish.

Steve and Dan entertain us saturday night with some banjo, fiddle, guatar and singing and I was quite impressed.

Josh and Jake hit a wave so hard on saturday it cracked the back of there small 14 foot boat and they were happy to make it back to shore with out sinking. Paul was able to heliark it at westwind and get them back on the water for the evning bite.

We also had a nice fire down by the lake saturday night.

Jake managed to find one elusive upper red lake crappie as well as Josh landing one. I saw cole and jeremey on saturday and they had gotten 20 before opener. So theres stilll a few out there but you have to work for them

Phenomenal! Hit my usual haunt on east side. Not a boat within 1/4 mile of us and had a blast. Fish were definitely in the rubble near transition areas. My mom and Dad , who are pushing 70, caught a 26in and 28in which was nice to see. Saturday was a little tough with the wind but still caught many fish from 10in to 24in. Seined our own shiners which was definitely the ticket. Sunday evening boated over 100 fish in 3 hours! Would have to say a great opener all around. Not many reports yet but would like to hear how everyone did. Watching the sun set tonight wishing I didn't have to go home. Will be back on Thursday though! Might be by myself so shoot me an email if you need a seat.

Report for May 17. Left the motel around 11:30 this morning, got to Red and headed out the public access and headed away from the boats at the mouth of the Tamarack and found an area less traveled. Trolled in 8 to 8.5 f.o.w. and found the water temp running between 58 and 60 degrees. One of us using a green with orange belly shad rap, the other using a blue with white belly shad rap. By 12:30 the first 3 keepers (16 3/4" and two at 15) were in the boat, (as well as a throw back walleye and pike), with the majority caught on the green..but that died off, so switched over to the blue. Continued to troll the 8 - 8.5 depth and at the end of 3 hours we had our 8 keepers between the two of us, we had thrown back 8 walleye (one at 14" the rest ranging between 18" and 22"), one pike back and one pike that was missed and back home by 4. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

If I can get my wife to help me I will definitely post pics. They are on her phone as we forgot the camera but still look pretty good. I have a rule for myself to never bring my phone with me hunting or fishing (just doesnt seem right) but she snuck hers along. As for the fish, I was quite suprised to land a walleye that big on Red. Did hear of a 29in caught so that is a good sign. I will work on those pics.

I had Jim, Sten and Dustin up yesterday. We started off drifting jigs and proceeded to catch fish all day long. The strange part as it was 3 out of 5 were keepers. We came into westwinds harbor around 1 and had fresh walleye for lunch. The guys came back to the cabin and took a nap for a couple of hours. We then headed back out and came home with 8 more. There headed home this morning with there 4 a piece plus the four I donoted for lunch yesterday. Could not of asked for a better day and got me out of driving the tractor at the farm for the day.

Caught 4-walleye over 20-inches the bigest 23 1/2 on Monday morning on a rapala. Boy those hooks are sharp seems like you get one in the fish one stuck in the net and one in your finger. I took the front 2 off made it a lot safer. Not many boats out where i am. Easier to get keepers in the evening.

I was in the WW one time and a guy comes in with a lead-head jig buried in his thumb looking for help. Because of my vast experience in Em. Med. i voluntered pushed the barb through and cut it off with his leatherman. He was really happy and bought a shot of wiskey to steralize the wound but he drank it instead.

Fished Red this past weekend saturday and Sunday. We pulled #9 floating rapalas and #7 husky jerks. This was like beating them with a club. Once we found what depth the fish were using it was pretty simple. We caught over 50 fish both days in around 4 hours of fishing both days along with a 42.5 inch northern and a 38 inch northern. If you like to troll and also use boards get out on red and have some fun.

Was that a double secret depth then? whistle how were the bobbers and jiggers doing?

Johnny - Are the shiners still in shallow?

Everything is shallow right now. From crappies to pike and even walleye with sheephead the shoreline is stacked.

I and a few guys fished last weekend.

Being a river guy and with the late spring, I figured there would still be fish in the river, but it was pretty slow in the river.

We did get a few trololing stick baits and shad rap in the river but most of our fish came out on the lake either on the sharp breaks just outside the river mouth or in less than 7 feet of water on the likely spots on the north end of the lake.(Wind was out of the southeast)

Best technique was 1/8oz pink, or orange jig tipped with a minnow slowly dragged while anchored. Lively shiners out produced fatheads.

The addition of a stinger hook also helped.

6.0-6.5 fow worked for us, and looking for a slight increase in water temps in certain areas.

WOW! Another great couple days on Red. Key was finding the transition areas focusing over rock and rubble (6-8ft). This time I put a slip bobber on and again used our own seined spottails. I am not much for numbers but my friends son wanted to keep count and we quit at 175. Not too bad for a day and half. Only kept enough to eat for dinner and let the rest swim away. We have a dock in and could see fish surfacing after sunset in water less than two feet. After a tough hard water season it is nice to see such a variety in size. Not sure why the slot needs to be changed in June as there are plenty of eaters to be had. Anyone else have mosquito issues? We couldnt even be outside until after dark. Hope all had success as well.

Hey ya'll. We are up for our annual URL trip from Missouri. We started last night and cuaght very few. Went out again this morning and very few again. We have fished our usual spots (mainly north shore, tamarak river mouth, westwinds area in the usual depths along the breaks. Tried fatheads, shiners, bobbers, jigs, spinners, and everything is really slow for us confused . We haven't headed south yet or to many spots out a few miles, or shallower than 5 feet, but we definitely will be trying some new things soon. I see some posts of great success had by others and I/we are quite envious. I have a few "new-to-fishing" people up here with me and I hate to see them discouraged by these slow days. If anyone has any helpful hints/advice for us struggling folks that would be greatly appreciated wink . Thank you in advance and happy fishing. I will post up if we get into them. Thanks again.

if you are having trouble and came up from KC the best thing I could suggest is to hire a guide for a 1/2 or full day trip.....the tips will help you in the future and a guide is always more open to talking/giving latest info to you in the future if you have lined their pockets at some point in time.....good luck

Try pulling spinners with Shiners. Chartruse green, purple, gold and white are good colors. Go slow and keep the bait low and you will get into some fish. Take a good look at the area south of Westwinds to the SE corner of the lake as often times it is a solid area. Also between Rogers resort anmd Morts as that has been good. Once you find aa area that you keep getting bit set up on them with the jig and bobbers.

KC Walleye......head south (from Westwind) past the sunny beach area and find the rocky/rubble transition areas. I have been out there quite a bit lately and it hasnt failed yet. Like JP said, once you find them throw a slip bobber with a shiner and have fun. 6 to 8 ft seems to be the depth right now. I dont believe you need to go all the way towards Morts or Rogers. Another area that we have found success was 3 to 5 miles west of the river on the north end with the same presentation but a little tougher to find fish. So far for us shiners have outdone fatheads 2 to 1 but can be hard to find right now. Dr. Tackle in Kelliher has jumbo fatheads which worked great for us when we ran out of the shiners. Good luck guys!

Fishing has been really good the past week for our guests, and we have managed to get out a couple times ourselves. We have been pulling shadraps while trolling in the 8-8.5, today the green w/orange belly outfished the blue/white one; we worked the northend and did bring home what we wanted for supper and did some catch and release. The last few days our fish cleaning room has been pretty busy and folks have been having a lot of fish frys; some using the same presentation as us, some pulling a shiner, and we had a group yesterday that anchored in about 6.5' depth, slip bobber jig with a regular minnow and they all limited out. Tonight coming in to the public access we even saw some folks reeling some in that were shore fishing..gotta love it when you see a lil kid hollering and getting all excited cause he got one!

Thanks for the advice JP, scaup, and drake. I greatly appreciate all of the help. We did get into some last night on the north end in 6 fow. Caught about 60 or so in 3 hrs. Not too bad. We will head south today and hopefully find them during the day a bit. Thank again. See you out there.

Not too bad?

Not too many places anywhere on God's green earth you could EVER utter that same sentence!

One walleye every 3 minutes... and it's not TOO bad... whistlegrincrazy

Have fun.

Good Luck!

I totally agree. The best walleye fishing around right now. All you really have to do is stay shallow and roam until you locate them and then it is on!

Friday in the rain was pretty good fishing, as was sunday eve. For some sunday eve was the best fishing all year! Fishing on Sat was impossible as there were 5 footers outta the west. We saw a few boats try to get out, but IMO it simply wasnt worth the risk

We had an easy time of it sunday as well...limits for 4 of us (2 13 year old girls no less!) in about 2 1/2 hours, midday.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
