Has anybodys tried jumping around in a portable? We were up out of WW a week ago and caught 7 from 1200pm-430pm. All on plain red hook and fathead. We would catch one or two every 45 mins or so. We are going to try hopping around next time up. 15 mins at each spot and then move. And if we catch one or two move right away after catchin them

I just got back Friday from red and where we went out of is the same access chad uses. We were up for 3 nights and ended up with about 30 eyes. There was very limited night bite for us. We had about 5 hits after sundown. I got a few jigging raps, but most were on rattle reels or bobbers. Pink, white, orange and green seemed to work best for us. Hope the bite turns on for ya.

Fished Saturday out of Westwind's. There was a good bite at first light until about 10:00. Then dead until noon. The action was steady all afternoon with a pretty good rush from 3:00 until sunset. We caught a limit for 6 people with about 8 "over" fish, a dink, and one perch. Most of the action came by slow swiming a jigging minnow (we used rapalas, darters, and a couple of generic copies) with a minnow head on the bottom hook. The fish really didn't want to come off the bottom. We were south in the KC beach area.

Four of us fished from Thurs at noon through Sun early morning. Fished in Spider Johnson's sleepers out of Westwinds. We moved twice and fished in both 10.5 and 12 fow. Fishing was slow but a great trip non the less. We caught 20-25 walleyes for the trip, 12 of which were keepers. Very sporadic bite except Saturday afternoon when we caught 10 from about 4-7 pm. Majority of fish were caught close to bottom on a pink buckshot spoon with a minnow head -OR- 2 ft off with a big golden shiner. Zero night bites on the rattles and zero northers, which we were fishing hard for. Marked and caught some perch that sure were aggressive but small. First trip ever without some pike activity and definately on the slow side for eyes but it was still a fun time. Spider did a great job moving us even though we were content to ride out the slow period. Good luck to all, hope to be up again this winter.

Just got off the lake, It was a overall slow weekend the fishing was very sporatic with a few houses catching limits and some just picking up a few.

I managed to move a house a couple miles out in about 16.5ft of water. I started fishing around 2:30 or so and had my limit by 3:15 along with a nice perch and throwing a few back. The were all caught on a buckshot (yellowish) with a minnow head. Gunna start moving more houses tommorrow as it seemed to be a fishy area, good luck everyone

Just got back from a 2 day trip staying with Kelly and Jonny P. The two of us got to fish in their 3 man house and had a good time. We fished from 1pm Sunday til 930 this morning. Caught only 3 fish(one 20"er and 2 keepers) on Sunday. Yesterday was pretty good. Caught 14 from 8am til 430pm. They were all 14.25-18". Of the 14 caught, 3 were slot fish and the rest were keepers. All but one were caught jigging. You had to work your butt off and jig non-stop. Every fish we marked absolutley slammed our bait! A glow green buckshot took most fish. A red rattling varmint and red flyer spoon caught a couple too. Something with extreme rattles seemed to be best. There was no night bite at all and we didnt mark a fish this morning. Thank god for yesterday!! Thanks again to the Petrowskes for there great service!

We fished out of Chad Benson's from Tuesday afternoon till Thursday morning. Caught 20 Walleyes's and had 9 nice keepers. 4 were over and a bunch of 13's. A little slow but we had a good time and went home with some fish in the bucket. Bobber fishing with pink jigs worked best for us.

I fished next to one of Chad's houses today and did real good. We started fishing at 8 am and had our limit by 11. Most of the fish we brought home were just under 17" and we caught a few real nice fish that were over the slot that went back in the lake. We were about 4 miles out in 16 feet of water with most of the bigger fish caught on a super- glo goldfish macho minnow with a minnow head. Man it is fun to go fishing and actually catch some fish, its been slow fishing around home. Good Luck!

My buddy fished the same holes with the same jigs and minnows on Sunday and didn't catch a fish. Man what a difference a few hours makes.

We fished out of Chad Benson's yesterday. Fishing was slow but steady, with fish coming every once in a while. We did go home with a few eaters though. Best baits were gold "Macho Minnows" and glow/green "Glow Demons". full-130-5092-dscf3598.jpg

I might add that Chad had a really nice houses and great service. Heated outhouse was especially appreciated by the female contingent.

Yep, Chad Benson is a really nice guy with nice houses. Not much more you can ask from an outfitter. Fish are a bonus.

I was out the last two days and two nights. Tried a few different things. Best bite was yellow jig heads or hooks with fat heads on deadsticks. Ended up with about 45 hits over two days.

Heading up to Red to fish out of Chad's houses this weekend. Has anyone noticed if the water clarity is good or not this year or used an underwater camera? Any luck at all with jigging or is the deadstick still the way to go? Thanks guys.

LuckyGPSFeller...how is it you got your nickname? You didnt drop your gps in the lake and then fish it out did u? Anywho....I know of a good way to check water clarity.....when you get up there this weekend just have one of your buddies hold your feet and dive down the hole. Should get a pretty good read on how clear the water is that way. I know my ice hole will be clear cept for the minnow in it!!!!!! Bottoms up!!!

Hey Tinkernuts (shawn1982), I think I remember you from last year. I'm just wondering if I'll be able to fish your "Green Hornet" out of the lake this year (with my camera) when you lose it down the hole. I hope this year your better at catching fish than you are at drinking a minnow out of a bottle of Icehole!!! See you on the lake...or in it!!

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
