Thanks Kelly

I talked to the guys at Westwind again today and they said that the best bite seemed to be from sunup until 10:00 AM.

what about taking the wheelhouse out with the truck?

I do not know if Westwinds is letting trucks and houses out. You'll have to call them.

It does say fishing reports...towing reports is a whole separate thread! Besides, with the ice as unpredictable as it is early on, it's always best to call the road operators and get the latest update...what one thinks is safe is insanity to another...On one of our local lakes, I walked out and popped several holes...8" to 10" MAXIMUM...then I watched a big Dodge Diesel with rear duellies drive right past me....I was getting ready to call 911...the guy wasn't even sweating!

I went out from Rogers saturday afternoon and came back today. The bite was best in the morning and right before dark but had a couple random hits at night and during the day. I only went about about half a mile and was in about ten feet of water. Probably had 60 fish with about 20 misses. Unlike previous years, the fish were mostly bigger then the slot. I had easily half of my fish over 20 inches which I have never seen before on red. I did come back with a limit of 15-17 inchers as well.

I just went out in the middle of nowhere as far from as other houses as I could get and plopped down. The fish that came through seemed to not care about the bait but definitely preferred bare hooks and dead lines. I caught fish on shiners, rainbows, suckers, fatheads, etc. Seemed like the bigger the bait the better.

Fished out of Roger's on Tuesday. They are only letting people go out 3/4 to 1 mile. With good reason, 12 inches of ice on thier road and 6-8 inches 30 yards off of it. Fished near the end of their road in 12 FOW. Best bite from about 3:30 to just after dark. Caught 4 17" and smaller and two in the slot and released. All caught on red Macho Minnow with minnow heads.

A report from the way south, for the last couple days. Fishing was on the slow side last night out of our houses. We were fishing in several different depths ranging from 10ft out to 13 ft. Everyone iced a few walleys with a better bite from 9pm to about 11pm in the 12.5ft range.

the 10ft area was much slower with only a few being caught, the bite turned off after 5pm. This morning started off slow for all depths. our house in 10ft managed to catch 10 or 11 keepers from 8:45am to around 12:00pm. Most of those were caught on a simple orange hook tipped with a fat head. The 12 Ft range picked up as well and continues to produce with a steady bite, ( nothing really crazy) I pushed a house out to about 13.5ft. and the've mangage to ice 23 walleys from noon to 4:30 pm and were still cathing when i came in to grab a bite to eat. i think the key is to just stay away from the crowds and be safe . the bite really seems to be picking up. good luck to all

A report from the last couple days from the south side. Yesterday Fishing was very slow compared to the day before. Most of our fish were caught on a dead stick tipped with a simple hook and fat head in about 10 1/2 feet of water ranging 2-8 inches off the btm.

This morning also started off on the slow side with everyone reporting a very light bite with most action happining in the 13-5 ft range. most fish were caught deadsticking it. this afternoon action started to pick up aroung 2:30pm but still a light bite with most success coming on the dead sticks. Chad and Ryan punched the center road out another mile our so but started to run into thinner ice people are advised not to drive beyond the plowing . "do to thinner ice" Theres alot of open space out there up that point. My advise would be to just be safe, check the ice before you drive and try to get some breathing room between you and the next guy.

fished red yesterday afternoon and most of today, Yesterday afternoon had 3 walleyes come up the hole, caught them all on rattle reels, This morning the bite lasted a whole 30 min, pulled in 12 eyes caught most jigging. Only were able to keep 3! the rest were all in the slot! Had a great time catching some nice eyes!

Things are turning around on the north side but honestly it’s a scattered occurrence. One house will limit out and the next will one will only get a few. One group pounded them thirty feet from the house while the guys that stayed in the house had little action but the house 70 yards away it was the opposite. Just as tonight I caught nine with three keepers but the guys 1/8 mile away on the same break line did not have a bite all evening. Now go on the other side and they caught a bunch of fish but all too big. If I had any explanation at all I would definitely share it.

I am seeing the active spots have aggressive fish; fish that don’t even show up on the flasher before the line goes tight and that is always a good sign. This front coming through should shake em up a bit and hopefully for the good.

Fished out of Hillmans road yesterday and did alright. We went out about 1.5 with four people.

11 walleyes (10 under 17")

15 perch

1 small slimer

Lost a couple nice ones. The best set up by far and away was a small plain red hook with a split shot, small shiner or fathead on a tip up. I was chasing that flag all morning. The afternoon bite was tough, and then we left about 8 because of the weather. I was amazed at all the perch we were getting and marking on the electronics. I figured with that many perch around there would have been more walleyes and northerns. Oh well, it could have been a lot worse.

I parked the wheelhouse on 16 good inches of ice, but I drilled a hole about 50 yards away under a snowbank that had about 6 inches of ice. Be very careful out there. I would imagine that with all the new snow there will be now way to know where the old drifts are. Good luck

Fished out of Hillmans tonite. Started fishing around 3. We caught a 10, 16.5, and a 18. It was pretty slow. I marked 3 fish and caught 2 of them. They came in real hard and hit the spoon.

Is anybody deadlining out there after the storm? I always see reports of jigging and going with spoons but from the half dozen times I have been up there it seems likie the fish are more likely to grab a minnow on a hook then an agressively presented jig. Just curious to see how the bite is on a deadline.

One this side of the lake most of the action had been on deadsticks for quite a few days but yesterday jigging was working way better.

I fished out of Carsellas on Saturday in 13 feet. With 4 of us in the house we only caught 4 fish with 3 guys deadsticking and myself jigging. I caught 2 of the four, not sure that tells you much, however we fished West of that spot the Tuesday before and limited out by 12:45. We started fishing at 8 am, there was only two of us and we were both jigging. Lot of fun, I'm sure or success had something to do with the weather coming in. Good Luck!!

A report from the reservation line, yesterday . A decent bite in the 9.5 (rocky) range during the late afternoon hours most were caught on rattle reels. Not much acvtivity after dark. We also fished deeper in the 14ft range (mud) activity was much slower with only a few being picked up. Today was pretty slow with reports that the fish that were being caught were on the rattle reels with simple hooks and fat heads. We pushed some more houses out into the mud in unfished areas, time will tell if this will pay off. We have not seen much of a night bite yet this year, hopefully it will turn around. Good luck to all

Just talked to a guy fishing out of Rogers. One keeper in the last 24 hours. He said they've been out in portables and when the first set up they catch a bunch then it dies. They are only out about 1.5 miles and thinking it's going to get worse when the weekend masses show up but they're having fun and so will we in a week.

1/2/11 to 1/5/11

Fished out of Westwind and by the other reports, it sounds like we had decent numbers. Our group of 4 ended up with 64 walleyes. About half of those had to go back. got a couple nice meals of fish on the lake and was able to bring home a meal. All but 4 fish were caught during daylight hours. Dead sticks were the ticket with a plain red hook. I also found that having the bait REAL close to the bottom worked better than the traditional foot off the bottom. Seriously, 4 to 6 inches. Anyway hopes this helps.

Heading up Sunday-Tuesday to fish out of one kelly and jonny p's rentals. Not too much for reports on here lately. Probably not a ton of people out with all the snow I suppose? Just looking to see how the bite has been the last few days. Suppose to be -22 Saturday night, but still cant wait to get up there!

We did well last weekend but when the bite died we just kept changing up presentations. The hook and bobber was always down with mixed success but a variety of jigs were always at the ready for the mood change.

Lindy Darter, Flyers, Flyer spoons, Demons, Jigging Raps, Buckshots, blah, blah, blah. It all came out and got wet.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
