If you can get your hands on a TIG weldor, thats a good way to build up barbs and attach the tines to the head, I use a piece of 1 !/4 x 1/4 Steel strap across the top of the tines for weight, acts kind of like a airplane wing for those long side angle shots and keeps the bulkiness of the spear down to a minumum.

I built a couple new spears and painted them with a color scheme to match the school colors. Kids really like them!

speaking of colored spears, do you think that one painted white would make it harder to see for the fish against the ice or black since they're looking up at a black hole?

I've speared with many colors. If the fish doesn't see you, it will not see the spear coming. I prefer dark colors, black is traditional because they have always been that color. It started out black, because blacksmiths that built spears had black paint, old equipment was fixed and painted black to stop rust, they had the paint, therefore it was black for their spears. No other reason.

and as Henry Ford said "you can have it any color you want as long as its BLACK"

I used to think the same thing that the pike would see you if your wearing white or bright colored clothing but typically they are so intent on then decoy or what ever your useing that there not paying attention to anything but the decoy or whatever, but movements on the other hand can scare a pike faster than anything this also is true with some outside noises such as a truck wheeler passing by and sometimes it dont bother them at all.
