Willmer-Spicer Area Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Why is everyone so tight lipped, telling where isn't going to put them on the fish or ensure they will bite. Why use the site if you aren't willing to help out fellow sportspeople.

Listing lakes around here with a decent bite is kinda foolish. Word gets around plenty good without naming specifics on the world wide web. That being said, see you on the ice Gonna try a spot the old fashined way. Go out and take my chances. If it pays off, I'll post a report. whistle

I think everyone has seen what posting a bite and lake can do with the internet.Turns it into a mad mad place and depletes alot of fish for summer fishing!!!

been meaning to chime in on this for a while, but do not want this to get into a spat about he said she said. everybody knows what can happen to a lake like diamond. was the internet to blame for this....no .......did the internet make this worse..... probably....but this lake would have been hammered regardless. as a general rule of thumb i personally use....the bigger the lake the more info, the smaller the lake the less. who really cares if you tell people the fish are biting on the bigger lakes, you still have to go find them and even if you can find them, you still have to catch them. a smaller crappie lake with one deep hole. on the other hand, can be harmed. but the problem is not so much the internet, it is the fact that too many people keep too many fish. there is another train of thought when it comes to the internet and naming lakes.....NAME THEM ALL. the more information spread the less likely one lake will get hit. give people a little bit of info on all the lakes around and people will go out and try different lakes for the opportunities each one provides instead of just chasing around the what they think is the secret hot bite. i would like to thank everyone who has posted on this forum, because of the early snow, bad ice, and 4 year old fishing partner i set up on the pond this year, and am not able to help facilitate conversation on the forums as i would like. this is a great area to fish and hope that this forum can find a level of discourse that will make people comfortable in joining and participating. this summer i would like to have an hso get together here and wondering if people think they could set aside a half day and attend. i think it would be a great way to get people to get to now each other and break some of the ice on this forum. please chime in if you would be interested.

I would never ask anyone to post where they are catching fish, and I would never post a hotspot myself, but i think its kinda funny when people post things like "I caught over 50 crappies and some sunnies in one day, they were up to 14 inches." Not gonna say where I caught them, just want everyone on the internet to know I caught them! Why even post info like that if the location is a huge secret? And did you actually measure the crappies? Cause its pretty hard to find a real 14 inch crappie anywhere but Red lake 5 years ago. All I know is if I go out and catch a limit of eyes, I dont jump on the net and say "Just caught my limit of Walleyes. Not gonna say where or when, just want everyone to know I caught them!"

There are only a couple lakes in the Willmar/Spicer area that are capable of producing or are producing Crappies up to 14 inches right now...if you are from around here you know what lakes they are!

Geez tough crowd in here. If the lake name is not a big deal what ya complainig about? I dont see you posting telling people what lake your getting your fish on. Thought posting the success i had would get some people excited to go out,my bad. Sorry guys yes i can use a tape measure. One thing i will mention is help people out who are stuck, makes me sick to watch so many people drive by others who are stuck takes a couple minutes to help out and both can be on there way.

I was able to get out fishing on Florida yesterday. Travel on the lake is not too bad. I was using a snowmobile however I did see tracks made by a truck out there. Getting on will be the hardest part because snow is deepest on the north access. I did not see any slush on the ice.

I caught a few perch that is about it. First time fishing the lake so I prospecting for fish.

Good fishing to you all.

Awwww, that's too bad.

It's almost like maybe the last 20 years of mgmt haven't really been all that effective.

2nd time in three years for winterkill. The lake and the watershed in general have major issues. There are those trying to rectify or atleast improve that situation.

The lake and those near it could be the duck lakes they once were, and there's an outside chance things could be heading that way again.

Hopefully it happens.

Well, it has been since Nov. 3rd since i have been out on open water and after two 60 degree days could not wait any longer......i should have. Two guys and only 4 crappies and about a dozen bass crazy Found temps anywhere from low 40's to about 50 in the shallow bays. Going to stick with my previous guessimate of about 1 to 2 weeks before the fish are ready to cooperate.

Guess i was wrong with my previous guestimate. Finally, after a long cold month, the fish are starting to cooperate. Spent the last three days on Green and things are looking up. While a little early yet, the walleyes have been tentatively biting at night in about 10 ft. Big crappies are going in the warmest water you can find. Started getting sliced off by the pike. Saw monster carp hitting the bugs and smallies smacking topwater schools of perch. Smaller gills are showing up and can't keep the largemouth off any presentation. Would assume green weeds will start showing up within a week, which should draw even more bait fish in shallow. If Green is just starting, would assume the other shallower lakes will be good to go by this weekend. Have not seen a lot of traffic, and if you have been waiting to get out, looks like now would be a great time to do so!

I will be on green this weekend, have not fished it for about 15 years but will try locating some fish anyways. What works best now for bait? cralers, fatheads, leech's. Thanks. will be fishing out of a Black Pro-Craft and staying at the co. park.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
