Leaving Sat for a weeks stay at the Pike Hole. Hope fishing picks up a little with this brief warm up. Sounds like I need to pick up some gulp.

Borch, I assume you were using jigs with the gulp? If so, what size jigs would you suggest to catch both crappies and walleyes?

Yes with jigs.

We ran 1/8 oz most of the time but really depended on the depth and wind. Friday and Saturday we needed a 1/4 to have any type of bottom contact when fishing deeper than 10 feet and feel for the jig with all the wind. By Sunday a heavy 1/16 oz jig worked well in the 12-15 fow we found fish in. The crappies didn't have any issues inhaling the 3" gulp minnow on these jigs. In fact they were hooked deeper than the eyes for the most part.

Where is Pike Hole? I am staying on Pike Bay in 3 weeks, sounds like cass and pike are great fishing lakes for northern and muskie. What would you all recommend for lures?

If you are referring to the Pike Hole Restaurant and Bar, it is at the north end of Cass Lake. It is actually located on the Turtle River at the north end of Pug Hole (Bay). If you are staying on Pike Bay, it would be a fairly long boat drive.

I'll be on Pike Bay during that same time period. 6/13-6/27. Are you staying at the campground or Ojibway?

Pike Bay has excellent muskie fishing as well as good pike as well. But I'm there for the walleyes.

Pike Hole is a 45 minute boat ride from Pike Bay on a calm day.

We are actually going to be at Ojibway from June 4-10. We have a guide for the 5th that we are going to meet on the west side of Cass near Allen Point and then go from there. He would have come to the resort but rather than doing that we decided this was easier, that way we can pick up some food on the way back. We will have a blast even if all we can do is stand on the dock and fish, we have a boat rented so we will get out and a bout. Thanks for the info. Jeff

Troll some shad raps on the flats in the evening on PB and you should have success. We'll be slipping into the resort right afer you head out then.

Week 5/15-21. Same report from me. Tough bite. My father and I managed only about 40 walleye for the week. Enough for a few small meals and two limits. Quality fish though. We had a few small ones that were 11" or so. Most walleye were 15-16". We managed a couple of 20", 1 25", 1 26" and a 28". All of the 20"+ were CRP after a nice pic. Andrusia was still working by the bridge. Early in the week 8-10' later in the week 15'. Tom's Bar on Cass had some action this past week. Pike Bay was weak. I expect this to change as the walleye move out to the bars.

I just got off the phone with some family that have been fishing cass the last two days and they said the same thing. Sound like the fishing is slow. The rest of us leave Friday for cass. My question is what will it take for the fish to start to get active? Do the water temps have to warm up?

I too am hearing slow reports. does anyone know the current water temps? Cass, Kitchi, or Andrusia would be appreciated.

It looks like decent temps. during the week, so we should see some sort of water warm-up the next 7-10 days.

Just got back last night from another great stay at the Pike Hole. We didn't fish Cass at all but focused on Kitchi and Big Rice. The weather sure didn't help as it got real cold and windy with rain but yesterday morning we finally found some cooperative walleyes. 6-8 fow minnow and a jig, the bite was very light. Water temps were 57-59. Also found panfish in the weedy areas less than 4 fow.

Report for June 6-12, 2009:

Well, it was another Cass slaughter!

We fell just short (needed 5 more pike and 1 LMB) of our limit of SEVEN diff species: Northern, Walleye, LMB, Crappie, Bluegill, Rock Bass and Perch.

One night we cleaned 120 and most nights we were not done cleaning and wrapping until Midnight. We got the pannies and LMB in Allen's Bay, the perch S of the Western Potato Island, the Northern in the Eastern bay way back in Kitchi, and our walleye on the SouthEast shore of Cass. We did try a little fishing between Sailstar and the Rt 2 bridge and a little bit of time was spent near the Kettle, but most of our week was in Allen's with a little also spent in D i c k's Bay.

Although it was fairly windy all week long, it was easy enough to manage our drifting and anchoring. Early week was very cold. Monday the rain fell and so we drove our car over to the Pike Hole for lunch with a bunch of other Cass Lake Crazies fishermen. I wore a snowsuit from arrival until Wed along with a winter coat until Thurs then on Thurs the heat arrived and it was almost 'TOO HOT TO FISH'. Fri was a very nice day to end the week on.

Water temps started about 55 and ended on Fri closer to 60.

We caught almost all the fish on crawlers or leeches under bobbers. Walleye hit jig'n'shiner both Wed and Thurs pm and the Perch came on our leftover shiners on Friday at mid-day......EXPENSIVE Perch for sure.

Thurs night the mayfly larvae showed up and on Fri night the mosquitoes were out.

All in all I'd have to say it was about our best trip ever in 30 years.

Way to go Geno!! I can't beleive that you had limits of some of the tougher fish to catch and did not get your last LMB and northerns though. Next year!!

Cass is starting to pick up quite well now. Where most people had been fishing walleyes in Andrusia and Kitchie, there are more and more boats showing up on the main lake. The breaks and holes in the flats are holding walleyes in depths ranging from 12ft to 30ft. Jigs and minnows are still working with the leech bite picking up. The Crawler bite is also picking up. Crawlers however on a lake like Cass will bring you just as many(and sometimes more) perch bites as walleye bites.

Allen's bay has a good bunch of eater walleye in there for people with smaller boats on the windier days. There is also a good perch bite around the Potato islands.

Before today's monsoon, you could get tiller boats under the bridge to Pike Bay. I don't know about after today as we are getting hit pretty hard. The leech bite was best on Pike last week.

Crappie and Bluegills are going great right now also. Get out and look around a bit and you'll find plenty of both. Look at the shallows adjacent to steeper drops.

Well, there you have it. My last two weeks on the water. Grab a kid and take them fishing, you won't regret it.

Not for musky and walleye but for pannies head to reeds in Allen's Bay with leeches and crawlers under bobbers FOR THE KIDS.

hi everyone will be making our annual trip up to Cass in a couple of weeks. Arrive July 25th. This will be our 14th year.

When are you heading up? I have a restaurant called Stoney Point Grill in Mokena with the cass lake map framed in the dining area. My partner and I can meet you and point out some good spots before you go. We've been going to Cass since 1982.

While you're in there, you could try our Cass Lake Club or the Stoney Bones with an ice cold Leinies.....

We're leaving for Cass on July 24 for a little over a week.

Pulled plugs on Pagodah and off the east side of oniels last evening from 7pm till 9pm, one 9inch perch. Noticed Dead Man's looked pretty busy on our way back after we decided to pack it in (we're staying on Androsia), but didn't buzz over there to talk to anyone.

Will give her a go again today. Heard that a long may fly hatch shut the bite down a short time ago, and it hasn't come back yet. Also heard that someone was catching a few in an unconventional way, so will give that a go today and cross my fingers.

We did a day-trip saturday. We knew it was a cold front, but went anyway. A few small perch, a Rock Bass ...and that was it. We didn't stay for the crankbait parade, but tried most everything else. Marked fish down to 40 ft....they weren't interested either. Water temp was around 67 degrees, brisk NW wind... down to manageable , moderate N wind by 8:00 . Talked to a local who said the eye bite has been slow all summer. They got to eat sometime, so I predict the bite will warm up with the weather.
