  • 2 weeks later...

Was up by cass last weekend and had a good time. Started out on a lake north of leech lake looking for some sunnies caught 100's of little perch and a couple 7-8 inch sunnies this was in 23 feet of water and they wanted wax worms and tungsten jig vertical worked better than horizontal. The next day we went and fished the chain looking for crappies.Took us 45 holes and three hours to find them but when we did they bit. 35 feet deep hole mud bottom. The fish were at the bottom to 10 feet up. caught them on tungsten jigs horizontal with pink or red plastic minnow imitation ones with the forked tail. They wouldn't bite minnows or wax worms. The only reasoning I could think off was they were eating blood worms so they liked the red or pink color. Also on a side note I caught a big whitefish in both the lakes 3-4lb I didn't even know they were in there. I wonder if the leach lake band stocked them? If so thank you they will be put on the smoker tomorrow!!!!

Just got settled in at Cass last night and made a quick trolling run for a little over an hour.   Can you say bugs?!!

I ended up throwing back a half dozen little ones and kept one 17 incher.  Lost a lot of heavier fish.  Water temp was almost 68 degrees.

Borch when you says bugs are you talking mosquitos? My family and I were thinking of coming over there camping this weekend and have fears on how bad the mosquitos are getting. Thanks

Borch

Jigs and minnows on top of boathouse bar.  I talked with a guy that said they practically caught a walleye on every cast!!  45 mins to get 3 limits.

Well the fish have finally started to move deeper.  Cass and Pike are on fire right now in depths of 20 - 22ft.  Doesn't really matter how you fish them.  Live bait rigs as well as jigs and minnows vertically jigged are working great.

That's good to hear Chris. Thanks for the tip.  I assume you are talking early morning and low light hours but have you heard of anything going during the daytime?

And what's with the nighttime crank bait bite being so slow,,or for the most part slow?

What's your prediction on the next Mayfly hatch?  Do you think we have a couple week window here where we wont have to worry about it?

Actually we caught them right in the middle of the day.  As far as the nighttime crank bite.  It might have something to do with the fact that the last week and a half has been the waning to waxing crescent phase and the storms moving through make it difficult for the fish to effectively forage at night.  The mayfly might be another reason your crank bait bite has been off.  If the big swarm is close, the emerging nymphs are a great food source for all, keeping the fish out away from the flats.

Thanks Chris.  I appreciate that.  Middle of the day sounds good to me.  Looks like a full moon next week.  Now just keep the storms away.

The day bite is definitely better than the night bite right now.  At least more consistent.  During the day I'm still catching fish from 12-20 fow.  When there's a chop sitting over a school with a slip float has been very effective.  Otherwise pulling live bait rigs or jigging has been good with jigging getting the nod on most days.  I stuck this 28" eye on a jig and a leech last evening in 16 fow.

Any recent info on how the walleyes are biting lately and what has been working? Heading up this weekend. Any info would be appreciated.

I've heard a lot of small ones are being caught in 20 - 22ft.  With all the structure on Cass I would get out and graph the windward side of the bars and points first looking for archs.  Then come back and either drop a bottom bouncer and spinner with a crawler on em, or a heavier jig and minnow.

If you get a really windy day, they might move up on top and a blue and chrome crankbait works well out there also.

-2 right now in Cass Lake! Making ice!! I went out last night out on Pike bay, I found 5" of ice all the way out to 20' of water so I fished from 20' to 16' and couldn't keep the perch off. A mix between 4" up to 9", I also caught 4 walleyes, none bigger than 14".  It was nice to get out FINALLY!

You got it! Local bait shop said that he sold bait to guys heading out to Cass, Big, Winnie, Grace, Andrusia, and Wolf. We are still at the beginning of the ice fishing season so caution is advised.  The layer of ice that I fished is solid, nice clear ice. I was planning on going today but we have high blue skies, high pressure, and last but not least it's football sunday!!!  I'll be out this week though, and I'll keep everyone posted. It was -2 when I got up this morning :)

Went out to the south side of Wolf Lake this evening, got out there about 4 and fished until 6... Got some small perch right away out in 24' of water but nothing big. Biggest were at 9" and kind of chunky. Marked some high flyers out in 26' but couldn't get them to commit to anything!!! Only a couple in the last half hour I was out there but I'm guessing they were crappies!!! 6" of ice is what I measured all the way to 28'

Went out from the wayside rest out on Cass tonight, I noticed there was some hard houses out there so I ventured out that way. I found myself out in the river channel so I presume. I was using my flasher to find the depth as I scooted along. It went from 14' down to 16' then back up to 12' so I set up along that channel break. I fished in 16' of water from 4 until 6:30 and iced some pretty decent perch until dark time and then it went blank!  I was hoping for a walleye or 5 after dark. There was at least 6" of ice all the way to where I was fishing tonight.

10"ers Mike!

To me those are quality perch, I know it's not like the old days but they sure were fun to catch last night. I should have went this morning but the bed felt too nice, lol. Here is a pic of one of them.

Walked out from the marina just north of the way side rest on Cass. I walked straight out a couple hundred yards and hit the first break, it dropped from 10 down to 18' and evened out so I fished there the last half hour of light and about 15 minutes after that and only marked a few fish. Not even sure what they were, small eyes or perch. I did measure a solid 7" + of ice though. Plenty of guys driving sleds and side by sides, pulling their wheel houses around. I even saw someone set up just south of Star Island.  I'm going to try to make it out a little further tomorrow and hit that 30' mark at least.

Went out on Cass in front of the marina again, got out there about 6:30 and fished until 8:30 and only caught 4 fish. All small perch, I found a nice inside turn along the main bar out there, I fished from 24' to 12'. I did mark some nice solid red marks in 18' of water before light but they wouldn't bite. I also marked some tullibees about half way up, I thought that was pretty cool. Thinking on trying Pike Bay this afternoon and fish until kickoff of the big game!

I used to fish about 300 yards NW from the landing at the wayside rest in about 12 ft of water and just crushed the jumbos. Give that a try Jim. If you do will you let me know how you do please ?

Thanks Mike

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
