Since we haven't had January thaw yet, lets hope it comes for the Bash.

Its a go with Barb's tent. I'll be on B-Side all day Fri and maybe we can set it up then. Saturday meeting time is around sun up or shortly after. We'll be hanging around just off the Van Vac access at the HQ tent and then spilt off and fish. 3:00 PM is a good time to meet back at HQ for some grillin and chillin.

The smelt are from 3-5 inches, I'm curious about the question about smelt being from Lake Superior. I'm not sure where the person got the smelt, but I can't find anything in any regulations that prohibit the use of smelt from any body of water. Can you Mstark or Steve point me in the direction that indicates I need to know where the smelt are coming from?

Dave, I don't know any way for you to know where the smelt came from. The new regulations are to help prevent the spread of VHS, which is not killed by freezing, and so it's no longer legal to keep L.S. smelt for bait.

There was a pretty long, involved thread on this some months back right on this board, but I don't recall that it examined ramifications for bait dealers wondering where their bait comes from.

Just give Joe Geis a call at the Tower DNR and he'll give you the lowdown.

Just be careful driving trucks beyond the ice road. We parked on the road last weekend and walked further. Only about 9" of good ice out in the middle of the lake(and that was after the cold weather). Maybe there will be more ice by next Sunday

I did talk with Joe and there is nothing in the regulations that he could find, there are proposals that are being worked on at this time.

There is nothing that is in the regulations at this time that would preclude frozen smelt from Lake Superior being used on any of the lakes. If someone knows of a regulation that is printed/posted please let me know.

From what I have been told its not a ticketable offense at this point but ask yourself do you want to use them and possibly spread VHS to the lake your using them in?

Ill be using some salted/boraxed Grindstone smelt inland.

So far no sampling data has found any VHS in the big lake, but why would you chance it.

Do you have Shiners this year? Also, how do we know short of asking where the smelt at bait shops or markets come from? Do they almost always come out of L.S.?

You never know where the smelt come from. Bait shops get them from all kinds of places and they can say they are from anywhere. Short of having them show a reciept from a distributer who could also say he got them inland.

Thats why its so very hard to regulate and enforce. They cant prove where you got the smelt from. Problem is either can you.

Best to just get your smelt inland or from a bait shop that will back you if the DNR questions the smelt you got from them.

Is there a list of things that need to be brought or a list that people are already bringing? Would like to contribute but not sure what needs to be brought. I read earlier of some people are bringing food but couldnt remember what. I was thinking of bring a few bags of chips or getting a couple of those party boxes i think is what they are that have a varity of chips. Any info would be great.

I live in ely too and wouldn't mind contributing. I don't have a sled or wheeler at all (or truck) but i do have a small flatbed no floor trailor. Maybe i could throw some plywood down on it this week and use it to haul some trash to the dump after the bash. Would this be useful?
