7th Annual Burntside Bash w/map

Recommended Posts

Then the rabbit for what they call entertainment.
I like to call it First Call!

Bought a sled yesterday, installing the H2O on it tonight. Did a re-mod the Voyageur to lighten it up a bit-still have the stereo though smile. New Jason Mitchell Mackinaw rod, a handful of jigs and the bad news that the misses won't be coming with this year. Guess I'll just have to babysit Northlander in 09'.

I'm pretty much ready, just need to make the time go faster.

BooYahhh!

My Dad and I should be up that way Thursday night, tucked into our bunks at Bear Head Lake State Park in the camper cabin by midnight or so...

We will be fishing all day Friday, depending on ice conditions (looks to be walking for us) somewhere around Listening Point. Van Vac area is great, but we like to get off the beaten path...

We have some spots marked with the GPS and found a nice spot last year not far from the Burntside lodge, is there a plowed road off there this season?

This will be year 3 of ice Laker fishing for us and although we haven't necessarily been up there for the bash, it just so happens we'll be around, so let's fish.

Andy, I didn't see any sign of a road off Burntside Lodge a few days ago, but since people are pushing short roads off Van Vac, there could be a road out of the Lodge soon. It's always a short road, ending out by Indian Island. Of course, the small bay there is very sheltered, and for all I know it's a quagmire of slush/snow and no one wants to get out there in a pickup to plow.

We'll see.

Next time I'm heading to Van Vac I'll swing into the Lodge and see if there's been any road activity.

A note on GPS using nav chips: I've been with a number of people who use them and have been out on Bside, and quite often are a good distance from the structure they're looking for when the GPS says they're Johnny on the spot. It doesn't seem any of them do a great job on all Bside spots, so if you're using them to locate good fishing structure, get ready to drill and explore a bit to locate the spot you want. If you're fishing humps or a point, for example, being 100 feet away will mean being out of the prime zone.

No surprise, really, because even the best map of the lake (printed map six feet long) from the DNR doesn't show a ton of excellent structure all over the lake.

Man, this is shaping up to be a great Bash, with lots of folks coming. I expect with the roads/traffic already off Van Vac there'll be room to park on the lake near shore to offload sleds, so the lots won't be filled to overflowing.

Let's start praying to the weather gods! gringrin

I had the Lakemaster chip in and it is missing a lot of structure that the paper map has so it would be a good idea to compare your map to the paper map that will be at the access.

My group will be joining the Duluth crew at 6 am on Friday, so we will be fishing Friday. Looking forward to it as usual!

I thought 6am, probably the Chalet would be a good spot. That is if I can get out of the cities Thursday night, otherwise we'll have to find you on the ice.

Sounds like a plan. Or the Holiday in Pike Lake. That way I can stop at Fishermans Corner and get some Goldens. wink

Since we won't be in for breakfast may as well pick Fishermans Corner as a meeting spot. Steve, we'll get your sled and gear loaded Thursday night to keep it quick.

Quickstrike? Can you swing by and drop your gear on Thursday night?

I have no doubt you can get early bait at Babe's on the west edge of Ely or Great Outdoors farther into town. Both are on the main drag. Lucky 7 in Ely also has a full line of bait, and there's a Lucky 7 right off Hwy. 53 north of Virginia before you turn onto Hwy. 169.

My 07' lakemaster chip is right on when it comes to shore line structure but the mid lake structure is way off. Does anybody else find the same thing on Burntside?

the Lake trout gods blanked me today.

I have noticed that on my lakemaster chip too. Normally have to drill 4 or more holes to find the area I was trying to find if I havnt fished there yet. I have noticed that it normally will tell you that you are shallower when your really still over deeper water more often than the other way around.

Same here, up in the north arm there was stuff on the paper map I couldn't even find with the LM chip.

During open water I'm going to map parts of the lake with the 104c and compare it to the navionics chip as well.

Early Friday morning around 5 am or so. I may be by myself or with my son. He's still working on his schedule. I have a blue Chevy crew cab and will be towing a couple of sleds.

Hey Frogtosser,

If she can get that Friday off it will be between 5-6 in the morning otherwise we won't be on the road until around 2 in the afternoon. We are also staying at the paddle inn. Will be in a White Dodge with a couple of sleds.

fishgutz,

Had my H2Oc with me last monday with the 07 Navionics chip, I was up in the south part of the north arm with Steve, but the chip was off quite a bit. Showed me in like 30' of water and I was in 58'. Now I was on a break off an island, but the location was off IMO as it related to the island also. And it is definitely missing some structure (as are most maps).

I've use the Navionics chip and lets just say you don't want to use it to blindly navigate at night on B-Side or you might be running into points and islands that someone miss placed. smile

Still its useful for showing the lake map, stored waypoints, in relation to structure as long as you know its off.

The lake map people probably haven't redone the lake yet- Pokie in G.R. used to be like that too but they came out with boats that had a ton of electronics on them- ran the whole lake and now the chip puts you right where it says . There are no more secret spots as it has every nook and cranny on it.

I agree on the choices.   I didn't mean to say that a battery auger was better or greener or whatever.  I could care less about that.   It just seems that "most" ice anglers have made a switch to a battery auger in recent years.  That's all I was saying.  I know about a dozen people who regularly ice fish and they all have battery augers now.  I bet if you conducted a survey of all ice anglers, the majority would answer that they use a battery powered auger.

Best weed eater I've ever run with great longevity is Echo, I'd check them out

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.
