7th Annual Burntside Bash w/map

Recommended Posts

Cant belive the bash is so clase and I can finally fish b-side for the first time! What time are we suppossed to meet at the van vac access/HQ? Also I will be taking my dad with me and we are both new to laker fishing. If anyone would not mind giving us a ride to a decent spot that would be great (we will be in a voager with a cover) otherwise it sounds like there are always some fish around the access.

10 days till the bash!

Not sure when folks are meeting. If you're looking for a ride to get towed to a good spot, make sure all your gear is lashed down tight! smile

I wonder if Cheffery still has a picture of the debris field that my Otter sled left last year. I was watching his house, followed by 2 suitcase houses, followed by my Otter sled being towed behind the Arctic Cat......next thing you know the Otter sled is 6 feet in the air and empty grin Everything still worked, but it was slightly embarrassing to pick everything up.

Will be sure to pack everything down then, that is the last way I want my first bash to start with gear all over the ice. I will make sure we get everything nice and snug under the cover and hopefully it will be a smooth ride

Seems we gave the same warning last year but some packer fans just couldn't get it thru their thick skull!!!

Nice Avatar Shiner! Is that in reference to Quick hanging over the railing at the Wabbit?

I do remember being told to lash everything down, but I also remember the driver telling me that he was going to go SLOW grin

As for the avatar, I lost a bet to Pierbridge and have to keep it for 3 months........It had to do with who was going to go further in the playoffs.....

Did you just put a wedding photo of Madden and Favre as your avatar? You're sick man, just plain sick!

The chips are a bit of a double egde sword. you lov'em cause they save you time and help you on structure but everybody has the same info.

I'm going to do my own mapping this summer on B-side a guys gotta have some good spots to hit first each year.

Yeah, mine was off quite a bit last 2 years, it gets you within range and then with a little running and gunning you can get on your structure.

Just released my room at the Paddle since I'll be shacking up with Northlander as the wife isn't going to make it.

They have 2 rooms left there for those of you choosing last minute trips.

the long range forcast actually looks promising for the bash.

If I can make it, how is atv travel looking ?

Tami, slush is hit or miss. There's about a foot of snow in the open areas on the lake. The only significant slush that's been reported (I've found very little myself) is a deep pocket up toward the north end of the North Arm. Now, I'm sure there's some more slush around.

thanks Steve - it would be nice to see everyone again.

Jim and Liza said I could tag along with them and they could brake trail for me. Just not sure if I can handle the Wabbit 2 yrs in a row. crazy

Ah heck, the Wabbit is a totally voluntary experience. I may not go myself.

Right Steve, Right!

Tami, I plan to break trail as well for another with us on a wheeler if need be. May not be a bad idea to bring a strap just in case.

Well I am back at the Paddle Inn, can't get a hold of my niece so I re-booked my room. Thank goodness they had a couple left. My niece and her husband are doctors in Ely and they can be quite busy, along with having 3 kids. I will also be bringing my wheeler with chains on it. Gonna have to follow others around as I have never been there before. And by the way what the heck is the Wabbit? Do I need to bring bail money?

Well I am headed up with the red truck, 6x8 suitcase shack and the weber again so it looks like I will be driving with the doors open and the life jacket on! crazylaugh

Ok I'm joking I'll just be fishing by Van Vac unless it is safe for trucks out there. More importantly I will be bringing up some pork loin on Sat if people are going to get together later in the afternoon. I know a couple of years ago the weather was kind of crappy and I had to beg people to eat a hot BBQ pork sandwich and I don't want that to happen again. grin

I'll be coming up Thursday night or real early Friday morning and out fishing Friday all day if anyone wants to drink and or grill Friday for lunch or supper let me know.

Here is my daughter with a laker on Burntside.

Ok, here's the plan, I have a 10 x 10 ez-up tent I can bring. It has a top and 4 sides. It would make a nice head quarters for the bash. Let me know if you want me to load it up. We could set it up on Friday and Saturday if it is not gale force winds.

Barb, glad to see you are coming.

You should also just e-mail Frank (Surface Tension) at [email protected] and see if he wants you to bring it. He's organizing the Bash this year and may not see this post right away.

I think your niece's husband has been my doctor. Does he have the same name as one of the western states? smile

Uh, Wabbit bail money is optional. So far I haven't heard of any Bashers that needed bailing out. The Kwazy Wabbit is a bar downtown in Ely where Bashers have been going on Friday and Saturday night for the last few years. Already, those gatherings are legend! gringrin

I will email Frank. My nephew-in-law Is Joseph B., and is an avid photographer and lives on Burntside. His daughter "Amy won the junior varsity freestyle race at the Giants Ridge Invitational, North America's largest high school ski meet. Amy B. topped the JV freestyle field - which included about 200 skiers - with a five-kilometer time of 20 minutes, 15 seconds."

I was talking to Steve and he said that our store right now is the only place that has frozen smelt (we just got some in). If anyone is going to be going through Tower and wants me to save them some (or I can get more before you get here) if you email me what you want and how many I will set them aside for you.

Email me [email protected]

I hope to see you in the store, Vermilion Fuel and Food.

They are frozen and vacuum sealed, I just ran a quick check through the regulations and didn't see anything that would prohibit the use of them on b'side. You can't possess live smelt, but these are not going to come back to life.

So with that said unless someone knows something I don't, you can use the smelt on b-side.

Dave, there are no issues at all with using smelt on Burntside per se. It's no longer legal, however, to take smelt for bait from Lake Superior, so that's probably where Mike's question came from.

Also according to the DNR (I checked on this specifically), you can catch a smelt on Burntside and use it alive or dead on Burntside.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
