So,

I'm reading the posts, looking forward to fishing Lakers on Burntside for the 3rd straight year, haven't necessarily been there/gone there for the 'Bash' (although the this yr and last yr the weekend my dad and I picked just happened to fall that weekend), but nonetheless, I am posting this so you we are looking forward to a great time.

I have the opportunity this year to bring a 4-wheeler (last yr we drove out in a mid-size truck, yr before we walked out close to listening pt), possibly 2 wheelers, my question is will a 4-wheeler get me to where I want to go?

My dad and I have scouted the lake in the summer for structure, found some spots we think might produce, but I am wondering if a 4-wheeler is going to cut it? Neither of us own 'full-size' vehicles, which seems to be the choice if traveling on good ice, but my roommate has 2 polaris sportsman collecting dust in the garage (a 500 and a 700)...

Either way, we are going, just looking for heads up and I will keep my eyes peeled.

In the meantime, we're looking forward to another great trip, even if we have to huff it onto the ice from good ole' listening point.

Andrew

With another foot of snow falling today/tonight, it could make ATV travel difficult if not impossible. The snow is only going to add more weight/insulation ontop of ice that was slow to form to begin with.

4 Wheelers = a BIG FAT NO this winter!

I watched the baddest of wheelers get buried this week up there! It's sleds or foot travel this year!

From the looks of many Area Lakes I'm going to take this thread where it belongs...

Has anyone stopped in to let staff at the Cwazy Wabbit know they need a extra bartender on Friday night? Xplorer did great last year leaping over the bar to lend a helping hand, but she ( bartender ) was clearly overwhelmed leading to some thirsty FMers. Also I understand the bowling ally is open, at least last weekend, will it stay??

Slushiee anyone?

Thanks for the offer Mike and yes we can use help.

I'll just throw a few things out we could use help with or items we need.

First and foremost we need all of you to come on out and join us.

The Bash is an open invite to all of you!

Grills, we need a couple grills and the bigger the better.

Of coarse we need members to and be Grill Maters.

This is bring your own favorite something to grill, so everyone bring the brats, hamburgers or what ever and maybe some extra to share.

Side fixin's like beans, chips, and so on.

A couple, three, four folding tables would be nice.

Paper plates, napkins, and plastic utensils.

Maybe one of the locals can bring a garbage can, I'll supply the bags.

Just think of the Bash as a neighborhood picnic, bring what you think we could use.

As folks volunteer to bring items I'll keep a list so we get everything covered.

Thanks!

Northlander consider me in, Ripstick I got your message. I'm just starting to recover from the Grand Opening month up in Lutsen but should be in prime form come Bside.

I stopped by Van Vac yesterday and there was an ATV just out from the access with a Clam shelter. Looked to be a lot of snow for an ATV.

I didn't check the ice conditions, but it did appear there had been other ATVs out there. Travel definitely had to be tough with the amount of snow.

If the wind doesn't take care of more snow, I'll leave my wheeler home for the Bash.

Don't forget the Angel Eyes! My first laker came off of a glo Angel. A short time later, the second came in on a Slender Spoon. Both tipped with a chunk of seasoned Smelt.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
