7th Annual Burntside Bash w/map

Recommended Posts

Sorry, man, except for a couple first-ice jaunts a couple weeks ago I haven't hit the ice at all. It's been all business for the couple weeks.

But there's a lot of folks with wheelers and sleds on Birch, so I reckon the ice is pretty good.

I just got back from checking the ice on bside in the north arm part, fenske, and wolf lake. In North Arm there was about 4-4 1/2 inches out there and also checked Van Vac too. STAY OFF OF THERE. I went out about 5 ft. from the ice heave and she started cracking beneath me.:o I'm guessing only 2 inches so far so give it until after christmas break and you will be able to go out. Fenske had about 6-8 inches in the boat landing and by the fishing pier. Wolf lake had about the same amount as what Fenske had. Hoping that there won't be anyone stupid and walk out onto bside and fall through.

You shouldn't even have walked off shore at the Van Vac landing since it just locked up Sunday morning! mad

I didn't realize that it locked up on Sunday morning. I was just out and about checking thickness and decided to check Van Vac. I thought it would've had more ice then what it has now.

STF- I just might be able to pull my gear together for this one. The old yamaha got retired at the end of last year and I got a different ice sled. I found a nice 98' 600 touring XLT

with all the bells. And this year we going to stay in town.

the drive back after drilling 140 holes and chasing lakers hard all day proved I'm not 27 anymore.

For those considering fishing it for the first time, If you make it up it won't be your last time for the bash.

I've always caught fish and some in the 8-10 lb class.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again. you too Surface!

Burntside appears to be entirely locked up, no indications of any open water off the Van Vac landing as far as the eye can see.

Ditto for the big area by Dollar Island extending to the North Arm Narrows.

If these temps keep up, and the predicted snow isn't too crazy, we could have 4-6 inches by the VV landing by the weekend.

I'll know more when I see John Lehti at his fish house on Friday evening! grin

G.O., what's your official date for Bside iceover? And is this as early as it seems to me?

Stevo,

I've seen many areas locked up as early as the second weekend of deer season, and open water in front of the Van Vac landing as late as Christmas Eve (a few years back)

This would be an average year when compared to many years back.

Thank Al Gore for global warming, or the dang thing would have been frozen over by Halloween! laugh

Jim, I was talking overall iceover, with no open areas visible off Van Vac. I know the lake freezes at different paces in different places.

I wondered if this was about average over the long haul. Sure has been later than this the few years I've lived up here. You can't thank Al Gore for global warming, but you CAN thank him for inventing the Internet. wink

Probably normal in the long scheme of things.

You're right, I cannot thank Al Gore for global warming, only for calling attention to why everything is freezing up this early with a couple of feet of frost in the groundgrin

This could be real bad if there was global cooling smile

G.O--I read yesterday in the I'Falls that on yesterday's date, 50 years ago, I'Falls set a national record of -32. Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that it got broke by -56? Global warming my butt!

Yeah, I think Al Gore is still confused after he lost the presidential race in 2000 grin

Just got 2 of the last 3 rooms at the "unofficial" FM headquarters (the Paddle Inn). Looking forward to it again! STF, we're going to have to have an adult beverage or 2 and catch up.

Gutz, try the Paddle Inn and see if there are any rooms left. They go fast on Bash weekend because most of the folks like to stay there. If not, try Motel Ely (Budget Host). And there's a Super 8 that a bunch of my clients have stayed in. All good places to stay.

Worse comes to worse, I'm sure Great Outdoors would rent cots to sleep on next to his minnow tanks for a reasonable fee. Of course, you'd have to get used the sound of water running all night. smilesmile

On the bright side, if G.O. puts you up at his shop, you're right across the parking lot from Mike's Liquors. gringrin

Does anyone have a number to call for a place to stay in Ely?

I have a room reserved at the Paddle Inn that I am going to be cancelling. If they are full up ask him to call you if there are any cancellations.

Hmmm.... a few libations and a lot of getting up in the middle of the night. wink

Would a happy camper have to go all the way to the back room? grin

I'm going to try my best to make it up there for this event. Now that gas is affordable and I can stay for free grin at Gomer04's dorm. It might just cost me a few pizzas and a case of Mountain Dew for the guys.

Not with the minnow tanks that close by. wink

I imagine G.O. buys his bait from the same wholesalers most other bait stores use. Of course, he does have a way of taking care of his bait that is distinctly FINNISH. gringrin

Stevo,

We don't buy from normal wholesalers, but have hauled from our own trappers in northern Minnesota for the last 20 years and use quite a bit of salt in the water of the tanks when we do.

That helps preserve the minnows greatly. smile

However, not the kind of "salt" that you and wanderer suggest, of course!! smirk

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
