Thanks merkman, no offense taken. I didn't take it as you saying it's "your" lake, but when someone gives me a tip that's how I treat it, just like I expect people to give me the same respect if I give them a hot tip on an area. If you're ever able to get up north in the Grand Rapids/Marcell/Winnie area and wanna get in on some great spearing, let me know, I grew up there and know some kind of info on most every lake in the area.

And as far as being worth the trip, I usually go all the way up to Pokegama in Pine City for sunnies, and that's 74 miles from my house. When I get up there I'll let ya know how I do.

I have only had my camera out one or two days this year.

I am not sure what is wrong with me this year. But I never seem to bring it along.

First in general the phone is not going to take good photos in the water. Some may but generally most wont.

The next thing is make sure the flash is turned off before shooting the shot.

If you have zoom on your camera zoom in as far as you can so that the camera focuses on the fish and not the top of the water.

If you don't have zoom move the camera closer so it does not catch the edges of the hole.

And the biggest thing with a digital camera is take a bunch of photos (since they are cheep to take) and pick the best ones.

Thanks! we were all set up and ready by 830 and didn't see a single fish until about 11:30 then had about 6 come in within a 15 minute period...payed to wait the extra half hour before packing up i guess..

Now I remember... when I bring the camera the fish don't move.

Didn't have a good day as far as fish moving today.

if you go to the forum policy for posting fish photos it will tell you. We no that fish speared are not going to be alive but they should be as close to it as possible not all bloody and in a natrual setting were you got the fish.

PLEASE NO FISH ON SPEARS

Exactly! Because, even though this is a spearing forum...ignorance is bliss. wink

And eat!  Turkey, noodle, wild rice!   Darn good for first run ever! 😋

I have not eaten one, they are protected generally here in the states and Canada although there have been special seasons for population control but I don't think it was harvested for meat. I've hunted in countries where they are not protected and was with someone who shot one, I didn't eat it but it just stunk after I picked it up.

Do you guys eat cormorant?  Even Indians call them fisheaters, and they don't eat fisheaters! 🤮

Happy Thanksgiving to you all as well. We had ours yesterday because our RN daughter in law had to work today.  So I'm trying my hand first time ever at turkey stock for soup later! 😋

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.   The ice is coming.  Eager to get out. Dug out my old strikemaster Thursday and got it ready. Smokes like  a chimney at times, but can't justify buying a new one when the old still works good.

They definitely are stinky birds, the cormorant that is. The Sandhills don't really smell. When you clean them it smells more like venison than waterfowl. We figured he wouldn't pick it up since they must smell similar to chickens and my buddy has trained the Chesapeake to not go after their chickens at home

Many years ago it was legal to shoot cormorants.  My Grandfather at the time also had a chesapeake bay retriever and he said that dog would retrieve anything in the worst conditions.   One time he told me he shot a cormorant.  The dog swam out out there and refused to pick it up.  Apparently because they are so nasty, stinky, and greasy.   He said its the only bird that dog would not retrieve in 11 years.
