Capt'nMorgan if you know anyone in commercial construction they could get you gunnysacks. Plumbers and pipefitters get lots of parts in them. We throw them away right and left.

Try this. Last one didn't come up right.

Do they come to the decoy, or do they just happen to pass through? Do you smoke them?

Yes, in the cold months I make a lot of spears, every size, weight, style. I enjoy that nearly as much as using them.

shamalex72,

I smoke some, soak them in a brown sugar/salt brine overnight, then put them in a smoker for about 3 - 4 hours. I do a cold smoke the 1st 3 hours then do a hot smoke the last hour to cook them.

I also bake them, They are a firmer meat, flake off nicely. I have also grilled them with a little butter and galic spread over the top, I don't wrap them, leave the skin on and put that down on the rack of the grill, it acts like the tin foil.

i did deep fry some last week, had some pike mixed in, I could not tell the difference between the fish, I actually didn't know which one was which.

I usually try to take off any belly fat (the silvery stuff) and on any bigger fish they have a Mud line (fat) down by the tail on the laterail line.

They decoy in some days, other days they come within a foot or 2 just to see what's going on. Run small decoys for them, around 3" or smaller if possible, flash works well too, jig a spoon. There will be days where they will attach a spoon or small decoy like a pike, then other days they will stay 2' away and catch the edge of your hole. So prepare for angled shots, they don't give you much time some days, less than 3 seconds, Then they get you all flustered when you miss 3 in a row because they are cruising through, Then the one stops right in front of the decoy, you get all excited because it stopped then you choke since you think it's a easy shot....(I have never done that, I have just heard)... LOL.

They are very addicting, they are so much fun, and give you great practice throwing a spear. And as a bonus they taste great.

as far as the fish are concerned, he could be holding the spear!P1060077Small.jpg

2010 chrome edition (not chromed, painted with chrome paint)

P1060079Small.jpg

made it out today, dropped the spear on the first one at 10, in the head, never wiggled. second at 11, fish took off when I dropped the spear, got it in front of the back fin, not where you want to hit them, but with these barbs, the fish simply do not come off until you take them off!!

I don't fish sunnies so I don't know; do you just catch and release them or keep them for the frying pan?

How many would it take to have a "good day"?

I see many more tiny sunnies and 3" perch and tiny sunnies than the Bull Sunnies but we have seen some big Sunnies stolling by one at a time.

Do they normally school?

I was halfway surprised to see them alone?

They will school but the Bigger sunnies may be on the outer edge of the school, they don't need the protection a school provides as much as the little 5 inches.

Merk I still got your number and want to get out spearing with you some time this winter. Its just that one weekend I emailed you we got blasted with all the snow and I knew I wouldnt be able to get up my driveway in Mora until it was plowed out. Then its just been so dang cold since.

Thanks for the tips on the sunnies.

I am still set up on the one lake with both houses.

I am in deeper water so it is a little more boring. We see bigger bass and more perch out in the deeper water, but they are harder to see.

I may move one of my houses to a clearer lake this weekend.

It will be the single house that gets moved.

Anytime you want to make it you can spear out of the single house or the double house; if you have friends who want to make it that is cool too. I have enough gear for several. If I am busy that weekend I will get you set up then take off and do what I need to do.

Just e-mail me.

Merkman, it depends on what you'd prefer. If you don't mind me keeping a couple limits out of the lake I will, if you'd rather see anything over "x" inches released that's fine too. I always abide by other people's rules when they give me a tip. On the other hand, if you want everything big put back and I finally get my 12" sunnie, sorry, it's going on the wall!! smile

Sorry if I came across like that. That is not at all what I meant.

These are public lakes so they are no way "my lakes" or "my fish".

Although I do affectionately call the lake I fish on my lake. smile

I don't stake any claim to the lake or the fish in it.

I just don't fish for sunfish that is why I was asking.

If I saw 4 or 6 big sunfish in a day is it worth traveling 30 miles for? Honestly I don't even know how many sunfish are in a limit. Now I know if you get a 12"er it would be worth the trip.

I will email you where I was at when I saw them and you can go check it out.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
