Orchard Lake - Lakeville - Story

Recommended Posts

Yeah its sad to see the limit being taken each time by some people. But if they arent breaking the law, then they have every right to keep what they catch. I release basically everything I catch (cept an occasional panfish or walleye for dinner). I would like to see the limits become stricter (the numbers, not necessarily the size of fish).

But until the regulations become stricter, if someone keeps their limit, good for them, they earned it. Just cause I, any of you or some other person dont like the taste of a big bass, someone else out there might love it.

Im half Korean and my family loves to eat fish. We take our share for the nights dinner, nothing more. I dont think its fair for me to be put into a big "asian" group that is thought of as a no moral bunch of people that wastes our resources.

I had some Hmong friends growing up in Minneapolis. Just a reminder, some of their families (not including cousins, uncles, etc) number in the double digits, so dinner for them may require 6+ fish. Of the 5 families I knew that were Hmong, only 1 had a family with 6 people or less.

Chew on that.

Not meaning to step on anyones toes but fishing is not a "RIGHT" it is a PRIVILEGE. Just like your drivers licence, you speed you pay, you speed again you pay more and then after a couple of more times you lose your license and you don't drive. I have not really looked at the regs. but I know when the seasons open and sizes you can keep but, keep fish you are going to eat that day or the next and then go back and keep a few more. It seems like people don't have any skillz and are afraid they won't catch another fish so they keep all of them. Sorry I am a huge C-N-R guy except for canada(they don't need all those wallys..lol)and when I see people keeping alot of fish even if they r doing it legally it makes my stomach turn and my blood boil. It's just me and my standards that I have to live and deal with not tryin to push my beliefs on anyone. Whew!!! Sorry about that. Now it's off to the lake which one I do not know, waiting for the buddies to show up.

Good Fishin'...

Yes it is a priviledge. And the people who were described in the very first post took their limit. They did nothing to break the law according to the post so why are they being bashed around on these forums? Yeah it sucks that those bass were all kept, but when they purchased their license, they are entitled to keep their legal limits.

Some people do take more than their share and those are the people who should be punished and looked at as criminals, not people who took their legal limits according to state law.

I started this post awhile ago.

All I have to say now, is WOW. This really generated some feelings...

I must also say this. I wrote that original post less than 30 minutes after I got back from the lake. So, it was fresh in my mind as something I didn't like seeing, but no, it was not illegal.

As to singling out a particular group, I really did not mean to do that, it was just an observation at the time. As to how I knew they were Hmong, and not another regional/social group of asians, that's another story, but suffice it to say that I have many friends and work colleages who are asian (and also I'm fairly well travelled with way more than 1 million miles on Northwest Airlines), so I think it was okay for me to say with pretty good confidence they were. But again, that matters not.

Thinking back, I'm not even sure why I wrote that post, I probably shouldn't have, it truly is none of my business what people keep, it's up to the DNR and state legislature to both make the rules and enforce them, that's what we pay them for.

Anyhow, the response has been really interesting reading. What comes to mind now is that we should truly not be arguing about keeping/releasing fish, we're all in this together to catch fish, right? Who cares what we do with them after that...

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.

Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.

Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
