I got pretty far on this project over the weekend between odd jobs, errands, a visit to a relative in the hospital, church, lawn mowing and cooking meals for the family.

I started a 10' x 12'shed during the evenings after work last week, finished the floor of that project, and then decided to use the floor to start a permanent darkhouse.

A floor and a couple walls

The hole is 45" X 30"

Walls done and a couple of sheets on.

Materials

5 - 2"x4"x8' treated

1 - 4'x8'x 1/2" CCX plywood treated

25 - 2"x2"x8' studs

6 - 4x8'x 1/4 sheets of grade 1 Lauan plywood or marine grade.

I can get a few more pics up here as I get it finished up. If any one is interested in building something like this I can let you know that the materials cost me just a bit over $200 including lumber, hardware, paint, caulk, etc. With two full days a guy could get this project buttoned up tight.

looks like its going to be a nice house.

Looks good. I am going to build one too. What are you going to do with the roof, paint? I was thinking about a rubber roof on mine, but not sure what it would cost.

Posted

Thanks guys. Shamalex, first I caulked all the edges and screws on the roof. Then I added two thick coats of spar varnish I had laying around. Now after discussing a few ideas with elwood on his thread, I am leaning towards also adding some sheets of aluminum or even thin steel to cover the roof. I will also likely wrap all the edges with metal as this is where the house will take a lot of abuse loading and unloading into the pick-up or trailer.

Nice looking house Early Riser. You going to paint the inside black or will it be dark enough as is?

Posted

Jeff I have painted the inside black. I just finished up the door tonight. Everything is sealed up tight. I sat with a friend in his house last year after he had just finished it up - except for painting the inside black and it was plenty dark enough. I just think it will be even better with everything totally dark except for the light coming in from the hole.

ER-

Nice looking house. I think you'll enjoy it this winter.

I'm curious, so here's some questions, if you don't mind:

What's the interior height?

Did you insulate the walls/ceiling?

Where do you plan to put a heater?

oh boy, huey comees out firing. The guy is gone all summer, until spearing time, and now hes back firing.

Welcome back bud.

I cut the studs at 6' so with the top and bottom plates the height is 6'3".

I am used to spearing out of a canvas portable so I am not used to an insulated house. I might get too hot!

In my portable houses I use either a buddy heater or sunflower, depending on the outside temp. I place my heaters behind me just to the left of the door opening. If this new house is as tight as I think it is going to be, I will purchase a big buddy and forgo the sunflower for the cold days.

I have a 4X6 Canvas and I use a big buddy in there all winter. I put moving blankets over the top of it and I get a little insulation plus no condensation but the big buddy heats it up enough for me to go be in a T-shirt even on the coldest of days.

It would be nice to have a perm house since you could mount the heater on the wall or put it on a shelf and save some floor space.

BnS- Thanks for the welcome. It feels like old times, checking this website everyday to see who's posted. Good times, good times.... laughlaugh

ER - Thanks for posting. I'm thinking of building my first permenant so it's cool to see what you and other people like Elwood have done.

FYI- Fleet Farm had a really good sale on Buddys and Big Buddys last yr just before ice fishing. Big Buddys were marked down to $90. Hopefully they'll do that again this year. I'd like to get one for my portable.

earlyriser if your house is as tight as mine you should be able to heat it with a candle grin I have a 6x8 fishhouse that is not nearly insulated as good as my spear shack and half the time the heater is on pilot or off.

Heuy good to hear from you are you as pumped up as us for the up coming season. it was so cool to see you get that pike on the get-to gator last year can hardly wait for ice and its not even duck season yet.

I have a feeling were going to get ice early this year. Which means we will all be out for the opener with more then enough ice.

Your Welcome Huey, always good to see the guys back close to season.

Here are a few pics from today. Sorry about the white spots - from drizzle this morning. I still have to wrap the corners in light steel and cover the roof with same.

It is fairly light and I don't think I will have any trouble tipping it into the pickup.

By the way, I believe the Dec. 1 opener is a thing of the past. I heard the DNR is going to let individuals decide when the ice is safe. So if there is good ice by Thanksgiving this year up north we are good to go!

How will you haul it??

I have been thinking about building one.....

but on our local lake you cant spear on so....i guess that sucks....but i dont know....

Any advice i have never done it before

Posted

where do you live landscaper?

Posted

Landscaper, since the house is framed with 2x2s and sheeted with Lauan, it is fairly light. I plan on either tipping and sliding into the pickup, or sliding it onto a trailer. Since I can spear on several lakes close to home, I plan on using this house as a base where I can spear if I only have a few hours, or use if it is too windy to make spearing out of a portable comfortable.

I like being able to set up on a different lake every day, so my portables will get the most use. The permanent house project is just a way to experience another aspect of the sport.

early, are you bringing it to the dec outing, im excited to see how you built it!

Posted

BnS I will try to get it out there so people can get a better idea of how it came together. A lot will depend on the conditions that day.

Posted

that would be great.

As fas as conditions, its going to be 75 and sunny out. we will be spearing in shorts.

Posted

I think that I will bring 2 of mine tto the get to gator.

I would wear shorts but it would brighten up my dark house with my snow white legs grin

Posted

dude, lets keep it to spearing here please!

Thanks smile

Posted

you started it and if anyone wants to use one of my shacks let me know.

Well, dang.  As cold as it's been looking at a bunch of lake cams on the North shore things aren't freezing up yet!   😐

"Lures with a built-in light have been effective in the stained water. Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal **as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure (not on a dropper line)."   So all the pictures/video's that show the dirty bombs with a dropper line are illegal?

I'm not a big FB user, but have an account for checking the Vermilion pages or a few other organizations that I'm involved with. I'm generally not a social media fan. However, social media can be great for helping to reunite people with lost items. I can't believe all of the lost dog/cat posts that get posted.   Next time give your son the hand auger! I still don't own a gas or electric. I never have to mess with something that doesn't work, and if I ever get cold I can just drill another hole and get warmed right up. Plus there's a sense of relief when you reach the bottom and then accomplishment when you break through. Unlike the starter cords on a motor, the auger doesn't seem to bother my crappy shoulders.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across Big Traverse Bay, with resorts and outfitters reporting great action on walleyes and saugers. Some ice roads are now extending over 19 miles out, staying on productive schools of walleyes and saugers.  Ice conditions continue to build, making this one of the best ice seasons in recent years. If you're fishing on your own, be sure to bring an extension for your auger, as ice thickness is significant. Most fish houses are positioned over deep mud, while some remain on or near structure.  As always, it's fishing, but February has been highly productive for most anglers.  It's Lake of the Woods, be prepared to catch some small fish along the way.  This also shows the health of the fishery. With fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th, the extended season on Lake of the Woods offers plenty of opportunities. Pike fishing never closes, and with thick ice, conditions are shaping up well for late-season action. Current Fishing Depths & Patterns: Most fish are being caught in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are catching walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, eelpout with some pike, tullibees, and crappies mixed in. Watch electronics for suspended walleyes. Many are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish fries with extra to bring home. Best Techniques: The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking continues to be the go-to strategy. Jigging Line: Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head are producing consistent bites. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap-style lures are also working well. Lures with a built-in light have been effective in the stained water. Reminder: In Minnesota, lighted lures are legal **as long as the battery is mercury-free and the hook is attached directly to the lure (not on a dropper line). Deadstick: A plain hook or small jig with a live minnow, set 6 inches to a foot off the bottom, is catching many of the neutral or less aggressive fish. Time of Day: Bite windows vary daily. Some days, mornings are best, while other days, afternoons produce better. Walleyes can move through at any time, so staying patient and paying attention to electronics is key. On the Rainy River...  Mornings and evenings continue to be the most productive times for walleyes. A jig and minnow or jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head has been the most effective presentation. Sturgeon fishing has been good by anglers targeting them. (Reminder: The current sturgeon season is catch-and-release.) Safety Note: While ice conditions on the Rainy River are good, they can vary significantly due to the current. Always check with resorts or outfitters before heading out. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains excellent in the islands region of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move fish houses, keeping guests on active schools of walleyes. Anglers are catching a solid mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Big crappies are being caught just over the border in Canada. If you're interested in targeting crappies, check with a NW Angle resort for guide services and ice conditions. Plan Your Ice Fishing Adventure! Lake of the Woods offers an extended ice fishing season, with:  Fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st  Walleye & sauger season open through April 14th  Perch, crappie, and pike seasons open year-round Whether you're looking for a day house rental, a sleeper fish house, comfortable lodging at a resort, or you are fishing on your own, there's a perfect option for every angler.
