Garden/Farm/White iron

Recommended Posts

I'm not much on the newer depth finders, but the guy I fished with had a new Lowrance and his chip had White Iron on it.

CCY - We are heading to Shagawa this coming weekend for a week. Previous years we stayed on the Farm/Garden/Iron chain so this is my first time to Shagawa. Your post has me real excited, I hope I can get into the smallies like that. Any tips?

FYI - We will be staying at the Lady Bug Lodge, from what we saw while visting there it is a nice family place. If you are interested I can let you know more about it once we get back.

gurkster, I would hit as many of the midlake rock piles as you can find or points with big boulders they seemed to hold more fish. When it was calm I used top water (rebel pop-r's) and when there was some wind I used rattle traps crayfish color and a brown shad color. I wish I would have went early'r in the week rather than the last day of our trip. I would have trailered my boat every day of our trip if I new it was going to be that good. I wish I could go again this fall. Let us know how you did up there and how the resort was when you get back. GOOD LUCK CHOMP!

Just got back from the cabin and the walleye bite is still hot on Farm lake, catching eaters anywhere from 6-12 feet with the majority in 8-9. Slip bobbers and leeches worked for us. Caught a few nice sunnys and one still had her eggs. Late spawn this year but nice to catch the walleye so easily in july. Will be back up in 2 weeks to have at it again. Boat traffic on the lakes seems down big time probably due to gas.

Welcome to FM grin

Where did you stay??? TimberTrail. Did you fish the reef on Farm??. Try trolling shad raps also next time you go on the reef.

Troll anywhere from 5-23 ft. You will catch bigger Eyes & Smallies .

CCY - Thanks for the tips. We leave in the morning. I will have a report when I get back on both the fishing and the resort.

CCY - We had a great time at Ladybug Lodge. I would highly recommend them - very nice people and place. Fishing on Shagawa was ok. We hit the mayfly hatch - so they were all over the water, and also hit some wind and rain mixed in. I will be back to the resort as they were great. I would also like to fish the lake again under better conditions. We did get some fish, but it was slow for us.

This work thing is killing me, finally getting back up to Farm on the 28th July, what is the word on the eyes? We had a great crappie hole but it has been dead for 3 years, any recommendations or techniques anyone could pass along would be great.

No, tubing the kids one day and we stopped in 23 feet southwest of the big island and while changing out kids we drifted across a tree pile(must have been put there prior ro ice out and sunk). It bloomed on the finder and we caught the biggest crappies there for 4 years, not a thing since, have not been able to find the thing the past 2 years(may have decayed down). The kids won the Hawg panfish money 2 years on a row at the Winton gun club). Well they are 21 and 23 now and the time just keeps flying by. We got a book on top of the 13 YO but he keeps on growing).

Back around 7 years or so not too far from Timbertrial lodge is the spot I'm talking about I think it was 26 ft. It is now laying on the bottom.

I'm heading up to Farm on Saturday for a week, staying at Timber Trail. Where is this rock reef located? Looking at a map, I'm guessing it's just north of the island off the point, is that correct?

How about the smallies, where is a good place to find them on Farm?

Another good spot for trolling Shad raps is just follow the shoreline to the left of the boat launch, troll the entire shoreline up to the boy scout camp. You will catch Eyes. Smallies & sometimes Pike.

Thanks Rodmaker

I'll tell them hello from you.

I've been going up there for 15 years or so and just love it. Never had a ton of luck with the fishing, but that's partially due to the lack of effort. This year I'm planning on spending more time on the water. My kids are getting into fishing now, so it's easy to get a pass from the boss.

Saturday can't come soon enough...

It's pretty easy fishing on the reef with slip bobbers, and tiny glow jigs. You will catch Eyes & Smallies.

How many go up there, and what cabin do you stay in??

I go up there with a group of 30-40 extended family members. We normaly rent 5 cabins or so in our group. My family and my parents "tough it out" in the 6 bedroom Diamond Willow cabin. We have having some friends from Charlotte NC join us this year as well, so we should come close to filling it up.

I'm one of the few who brings a boat, so lots of pulling kids on the tube or ski's and evening boat rides. I dont mind, as long as I'm on the water I'm having a great time.

Since I'm hoping to increase my fishing time this year, I'm guessing that will have to be early mornings.

If you can, try and get out with lighted bobbers around an hour before it gets dark, and fish for around 1/2 hr after it gets dark. It's a blast

The week on Farm was alot of fun. The weather was perfect and the fishing was decent. I got out most mornings did pretty good fishing for walleye's. Spent alot of time on the rock reef jigging with leeches, and also tried trolling and drifting the shore between the launch and the boys camp. Had a couple of 22's and lots of 12's, but still caought enough 15's for a couple of meals.

We also found some fun sunfish action between the point and the island one evening with the kids. I think we ended up with about 20 of them. Another fantanstic trip to Farm lake.

Fishing was pretty slow for us we tried all over and never really got into much of a bite. The biggest was a 22 incher at night not much else to speak of. The weather was near perfect alot of tubing and waterskiing was had by all. A very beautiful location I look forward to going back sometime.

Thanks for all the updates Good fishing!!

rodmaker:

Just looking at some of your posts on Farm Lake area. The wife is giving me a week fishing trip up north next spring for my b-day and am trying to decide where to go. Looking for great walleye, northern and small mouth fishing. Can you give me any information on the spring bite on these lakes, looking at the last week of May to the first week of June. Any info. would be greatly appreciated, haven't been to the Ely area in a long while.

Thanks!

Farmer

Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.
    • SkunkedAgain
Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.
    • PSU
Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?
    • Jetsky
Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
    • SkunkedAgain
I hope to see it and believe it next week! Nice looking crappie
