besides minnetonka, what is the best walleye lake in the metro?? I usually venture up to center city and hit the lakes up there, but have always wanted to stay closer to home. I hear bald eagle and white bear are good but lots of recreation traffic out there.

The best walleye lakes I know in the Metro all have recreation traffic in the summer get up early, nap during the day, then get back out late. Lake Waconia and Independence are fairly good for eyes also.

The biggest trouble I have is keeping minnows alive overnight since the local bait shops do not open at 4 am.

Yeah, the better walleye lakes are gonna be the busier of the lakes as well. Forest lake is pretty good. Honestly I'd say forget the lakes and just go to the croix.

Try the Mississippi River from the 694 bridge to the Coon Rapids Dam. I know you were asking about Lakes, but this stretch gets very little traffic except for the occaisional river bank philospher napping along side his pole.

Otherwise, you can try Long Lake in New Brighton. This urben lake gets olittle fished and has some respectable eyes for a lake this size. You will have to run up tot he second bay where Rice Creek runds into and out of it. (The North Shore) but I have had decent luck fishing this lake at night from around dusk to midnight or so.

Long does have a nice little boat landing on the South shore almost abutting Freeway 694. Take the Freeway and get off on Long Lake Road. Cross the Freeway and take the first road after the freeway wall heading East. It will lead to the boat landing and the fishing pier.

Tight Lines;

SW metro- Prior MPLS.-Harriet NW-? St.Paul- Phalen NE metro- Clear SE metro- nothing go fish the river. Your always better off fishing rivers for walleyes.

I'd have to agree with the Croix as well and ditch the summertime madness on the metro 'eye lakes.
