Fished Coon lake yesterday on the lower lake. fished the pads west of the landing and had some good luck there for Bass. Also fished the pads on the far west end and had pretty good luck there also.

watch out for inconsiderate boaters getting really close to you thinking they own the lake. I didn't try the eastern part of the lake. I'll try that next time.

I've spent most of my life fishing up north where the water was always a little bigger, the other boats fewer and everybody seemed courteous & focused on having a good time without ruining it for others. I fished Coon lake with my five-year old son on Saturday and all I can say is - Wow.

I was in the east end, where we encountered multiple jet skiers and tubers who didn't think twice about buzzing my boat, even when there was plenty of space to give a wide berth. These didn't seem like mean spirited or evil people, but rather individuals who were just oblivious to how rude they were being. Probably never had a dad to take them fishing. wink

Oh and here's a hint to the drunken party bargers cruising with mommy and daddy's pontoon: your loud profanity-laced ramblings travel farther across the water than your intoxicated minds probably realize. In addition to learning how to catch bluegills, my five year old was exposed to some new vocabulary that honestly I was hoping to keep out of his ears until he was a little older. So try keeping it down, for pete's sake!

It will not surprise me at all to tune into my local news some night and find a feature on the growing number of cases of 'boat rage.' The more people that you get out on the water with no self-control or regard for others, the more likely you are to have incidents.

(End rant)

My son had a great time, had to be dragged kicking and screaming off the lake when it was time to go, so I had that going for me. grin He is already excited about going again. But I don't think we'll be going back to Coon.

surreal its glad to know that your son had a blast and wanted to throw a fit because daddy wanted to leave. LOL

Sorry to hear about your experiance on coon. If you went on the weekend thats why it was so bad. That lake gets so many recreation boaters on the weekend that it is rediculous. Coon is a great lake but my segestion would be go on a weekday and you'll be fine. Ive learned to stay away from that lake on the weekend because of what you ran into. The pontooners are real bad there and the jet skiers are tearable.

Good luck to ya and have fun.

I fished bass and northern there a few weeks ago. I think we fished the north part and it was crickets. We saw a guy drag in a big northern, but we didn't see much of anything. It was REALLY windy, so I kept my little boat close to the launch!

He was way more interested in the crawlers than he was in the sunnies. He insisted on showing them to his mortified mother when we got home. I don't think she's noticed yet that I stowed 'em in the fridge... eek

Coon looks like it would be a good lake for bass & northerns, based on the abundance of itty-bitty bluegills swimming around. I didn't get much fishing in myself as I was pretty busy keeping my son in business. The action was hot and heavy, which was exactly what the doctor ordered for my boy's first outing. So mission accomplished.

There was one pontoon out there completely decked out like a pirate ship, complete with masts, a crow's nest and of course a plank to walk. I guess if you're going to do the party barge thing, go all the way. For what it's worth they seemed to be the easiest going bunch out there. It was those tubers that really chaffed me.

Funny. I stopped going fishing anywhere on the weekends. Weekdays for me!

Yeah there are two pirate ships out there and there is a hawaiian looking boat out there. They look pretty cool and someone has got a great personality.

Here is my son and his first fish:

Here's that Pirate ship, in close proximity to a fishing boat:

(Maybe they were going to board it...)

I'm heading out to Coon tomorrow morning. Any recent reports or advice? I'll try to report when I return, but I've only been there once and I struck out due to a crazy wind...

Seriously, Coon Lake hates me. I've been out there twice, and twice my motor refused to start the minute it hit the water. I ran it on Crooked the entire night before with no trouble! Grrr... Needless to say, it's back in the shop AGAIN!

Anyway, I took the trolling motor and trolled the shoreline weeds with topwater frog baits (something I've never really done) and I hooked up with a few decent largemouth! I've never caught a fish on a topwater, so that was really a lot of fun. Maybe I'll go back the next time I've got some spare cash laying around for motor repair!

Hey now, that one is all you!  Haha!  Don’t make another thread septic. 😉      Yup, the Looper Bug.  I couldn’t remember that catchy name for it.  2lb test is a little crazy, especially for the line quality back then but I can see that being a thing too.  Such clear water.  Looking down the hole watching the fish swim around and them looking back at you.  The further out I got, the easier it was for them to see me.   My one looper charged in when my jig was just below the ice while I was laying face down like you said.  It hit basically right in front of my face.  The fight was me rolling over and pulling it out of the hole.  That was shortly before the guys in the shallows packed up their little black shelters and left with their fish.     So, by the end of the day I learned: black looper bug; light line; conceal movement; and/or fish shallow.  And then never went back.

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time.  Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug.  I remember the first time I was introduced to it.  There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot.  When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging.  I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies.  I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs.  By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over!  Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️    I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home.  When I had more of the wander spirit.  Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais.  Then driving all the way home the same day.  🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!

I did the looper steelhead thing in front of the French River once.  It was fun. I got one looper but the sight fishing aspect of it was the most fun.   We saw a couple guys limit on steelhead up close to shore and learned the black fly was the way to catch ‘em.  We didn’t have any.   My first 40+ hour day that I can remember.  Went to work Friday morning, Van Halen concert Friday night, too jacked up on the way home to call it a day so we loaded up for the North Shore.  Fished all day, drove home Saturday night.     Those crazy kids…   Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands have always been a want but an undone deed.  The wander spirit has faded from my old traveling buds.  They like to stick to what they know now.
