Recommended Posts

I will not be driving out on any lakes for the remainder of the season.

The ice could be bad in spots and you won't know after this very warm spell we had.

I can wah the truck at the car wash. 4 wheeler for me from know on.

Wellner-Hageman Reservoir by comfrey also has a good amount of crappies, but not sure how ice is with the current.

Talcott does have very nice Crappie, if I could just find them. Every other year or so, I seem to find them, but they are sneaky critters. But they are nice slabs!

Thanks for the info. It isn't often I see a fishing report for my home town. I am just debating if I want to head back there for opener or if I am going to stay around where I live. At any rate thanks for the info and good luck this weekend!

I will say, the lakes including Okabena and Round are all crystal clear, which to me says the bite will be good. Now the wind..... that could be another story.

Caught a nice crappie and some tiny walleye from shore on lake benton last week. Are the walleye usually pretty small on that lake?

I too caught a very small walleye at Lake Benton this weekend. It looks to be great fishing in a few years.

I have never caught any crappie in Lake Benton. What were you using?

Lake Benton has some really nice eyez, but I do agree that in a few years it will be a hot lake!!

Has alot of little eyez, but a share of big ones to!!!!

Spent a few hours around the Avoca Dam today. Been years since i've wet a line there. Bobber and a worm...and an ultralight rod, but my daughter pulled in her first carp...Of course you've got to break the rod tip in the process grin

Little Catfish as well on the bridge.

I appologize for the pliers to mouth pics, but i think they'll live!

Boy you locals are going to be in for a treat next year.

West Graham this morning, boated 16 walleyes - Will be eaters next year laugh

Biggest might have pushed 12". Half caught on crankbaits, half on jig and worm.

Two nice channel cats, one on a crankbait, other on a jig.

And a crappie ready to burst.

Fulda lake the last two days my daughter and I pulled at least 30-40 walleyes, all released, all 10" laugh

They're thick enough i actually snagged a few with a crankbait.

I know it was hit with a winter kill last year on St James, but after a year plus has gone by, is it as bad as was thought? Anyone tried it lately? It had been one of my favorite panfish and bass lakes.

Lots of little northerns and some nice perch. Bass and other Panfish numbers are down.

weeds are huge and very thick. I had so many weeds around my prop I couldn't even drive the boat onto the trailer. Few good fish though

Any ice on the Fairmont chain? With the warm temps coming up the end of the week was thinking of getting the boat out one last time! Just wondering if they are open yet or think they will blow back open by Friday? thanks!

Fished kansas lake for a few hours yesterday. 5" pf ice straight out from the pier. Caught two small eyes before dark, after dark, nothing. I think its about time to get out the power auger. Hand cranking 8" holes kinda sucks after about 3 holes then I had to take a beverage break and do the other 3.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
