I talked a Park Rapids DNR marine bioligist today and they stated that they have a walleye sampling station on the creek between Emma and Big Sand ready to go. It's a little early yet but they have had a few "green" females show up already. So the early ones are getting ready to stage for spawning already. The guess is by next week (or by May 1rst) they will already have some spawning action.

I looked at the 10-day weather forcast for Park Rapids Area...looks like cool weather and rain. That should slow the spawking down for an extra week or so.

They don't have the nets set up yet, just the sign. I talked to Doug Kingsley (PR Fisheries Supervisor) this morning. They are going to wait until the ice is off of Emma.

They'll sample eyes that swim through, but strip the suckers to use as food for muskies in the rearing ponds.

Jason: Is Big Sand a good lake for walleyes opening weekend? I have never tried it except in the fall. Do the mid-lake humps product on opener weekend or are they too deep so a guy shouls stick to the shroeline structure?

Big Sand used to be "THE" lake to fish around opener, or at least the week or two after. The fishery is down quite a bit, but that doesn't mean there isn't good fishing to be had. I'd avoid the steep drops. If you go, head to the north end on the massive flat and use a jumbo leech.

Ten years ago it was hard to find a parking spot at the access around opener, now it's thinned out some because of the decline in both numbers and size. But I'd still recommend it, Big Sand is a dynamic fishery.

Thanks for the tip. I never would have thought to use leeches on opening weekend. I have always used minnows because I never thought of using leeches or crawlers that earl in the season.

jason thanks for putting up the info on the trap, we are expecting to put the trap in late next week but that is still tenative. As far as where the spawn is at, the walleyes are giving eggs everyday, even with the cold or cooler weather. Sunday some of the nets were fishing around the area but most of the fish were held for the next day. the runs are going good right now with good numbers of quarts being taken each day but we will see what mother nature does with the runs on firday.

if you guys want I can let you know when the trap goes in and maybe post some pics of fish or the trap working

Fur Taker: Any pictures would be great..keep the information coming. It is all really interesting.

Lots of snow is drifting up around all of the fish houses.  Plus the weight of heavy wheel houses and large trucks parked by them all add up.  1½ inches of water coming onto the ice isn't very bad.  One year I had over 5 inches come up to the bottom of my fish house floor.  Lucky it didn't freeze in that year.

The fish are growing faster than expected, taking up more space 🤪

why would the water be coming up above the ice with little to no snow weight????

9 days since my last trip to Vermilion (took a side trip into the BWCAW).  Had 22 inches of ice so we added 4 more in 9 days.  Water came up on the ice about 1½ inches so I had to block the house up.  Travel on the lake was very good, even with my front wheel drive car.  There are two main roads leaving McKinley Park landing; one on either side of the staked snowmobile trail.  Either of those roads would provide good access to fishing spots, but please stay away from the snowmobile trail and pull quite a way off the plowed road to avoid flooding the road.   Fishing was decent for mid January.  Best bites for me were 9:00-11:20 and 3:45-4:45.  All of my walleyes were 11-14 inches.  I lost one about 16 inches lifting it out of the hole.  Dang.  Vermilion Fuel and Food didn't have rainbow chubs so I stuck with lively chubs.  Didn't even try a single pike sucker that I had left from lake trout fishing.  Maybe next trip up.  The bonus today was a beautiful sunset.   Good luck fishing and be prepared for the cold weather this weekend.

Good luck and keep warm!   Maybe a big ol bass would help there?!

Okay then I'll try this again. We just need another cold blast....and then another couple feet of snow.   Nice haul. That whitefish is a beauty.

Tried Pearl lake today.  Had fish in every hole I drilled. Just not active. Only one nice sunfish that fell off at top of the hole. Several very small perch and sunnies.  Did land a huge bass that was a challenge on light line. 15-18 inches of ice.  Sounds like a cold day Saturday coming up. I'll be at the annual Eden Valley sportsman fishing contest.
