vermillion river?

Recommended Posts

I was on a canoe on the vermillion...east of hastings yesterday....for whitebass. Boy were they in a fenzy....we used everything from a mimic minnow to rat-traps. We fished from 3:30 to 7:30.....we pulled way over 100 fish. Great times! We were the only canoe on the water too! From shore...things can get crowded...and you wait for the fish to come by. By canoe...you find the hot spots and park! There are fish there....just take your time and find them! GL!

Katman, I am very interested in getting some actions on whitebass. If you don't mind, where did you load the canoe and was the action up river or down river? Thank you.

We loaded our canoe at one of the Public access spots and pretty much floated down. The action was down river. Look for weeds in about 6 fow. You'll find the crowds....but you won't find the fish...unless you're on a canoe. The action was awesome! It was one pretty much every cast. I'm not talking about dinky 12 inch ones...we got 10 at 17.5 inches and probably 20 or so at 16. I'm sure we pulled something closer to the 200 fish mark. GL. No crappies from what I saw. But we did see a few BIG buffalos get pulled in from shore.

Katman, that must've been you in the canoe paddling behind us as we came in to shore at about 7:30 on monday. Was me, my dad, and fiance in a 14 ft aluminum. I'll be there again on saturday.

Anyway, shorefishing can be very good on the vermillion. Right now it might be tough with the high water and flooded shorelines. In the summer I usually only catch sheephead and carp. But the occasional catfish, crappie, or white bass comes in. If you give it time though, you'll catch a little bit of everything. And there's some real pigs swimming around in that dirty water too!

You know...we did come back to shore at 7:30ish...but I believe it was Tuesday that we were out there. It was sure a fun time! And its true...put some time in the water...and you'll find fish. I've caught cats, crappies, whities, and sheepies there. But I may be out there again on sat.....but it depends if the weather lets us. Don't be a stranger and say hi if you do see us there.

Was your car a tan subaru outback (or a similar model)? Anyway, doesn't look like saturday will work. 45 degrees and rain doesn't sound too fun. Might wait until tuesday now.

That was actually the first time I've taken my boat on the river, had always fished it from shore or canoe before. We didn't find the fish until late in the day, and I suspect we could've caught more with a slower presentation. I'm thinking by tuesday the water will be even higher and muddier...unfortunately I think the water temp will actually cool down. \:\(

wow....that was pretty close. I'm sure we were out on Tuesday...and we were in a friend's White Subaru Forrester. Hmm...Makes me wonder if I'm getting old and forgetting things or not? But yeah....I didn't go sat. It was horrible! I almost went out on sunday....until I got outside...then it was a no go. I'm not sure whats going on with the weather...but I sure hope the bite is still hot!
