On Board Battery Chargers

Twins 57 Fan

Question

How do these things work?

I have 3 batteries in my boat. I am looking for a way to charge the batteries at the same time without having to take them out. Can the charger do that?

Are they hard to install?

Any info would be helpful let me know!

Thanks for your help

I'd suggest a 3 bank charger of your choice. Some will say a 2 bank is fine and that the crank don't need it but I say get one with enough bank for all your batteries. It's pretty simple, the charger mounts in your boat, it has a plug that plugs into your typical home outlet, if you outlet is too far, an extension cord is great. As far as wiring, each bank has a neg wire and a pos wire, just attach each pos wire to battery pos post and neg wire to neg battery post. So a 3 bank should have 3 sets of wire, one for each battery.

How does it know how much to charge each battery? Is there settings? Does it stop charging them when they are done? What if one doesnt need that much charging?

Thanks again!

It should automatically stop charging when full and it monitors each of the battery separately, if any drop in any battery power is sense from any of the battery it charges that particular battery. It doesn't matter if one battery is real low, one mid and one almost full. Just plug the charger in and let the charger do the work. Even if you don't unplugg it when it's fully charge no harm is done because the charger stops charging or cuts charging power to that particular battery when the battery(s) are fully charged. I leave my charger plugged in days at times because I forget to unplug after it's charge or just want to leave it on to monitor the batteries. Anywho, check the specs out, some chargers have features that may interest you more than some.

I agree we have a three bank in our boat and it turns them off the battery will be red as soon as the color turns green it shuts it off for that battery and so on! Its alot easier than hooking up individual chargers to each battery and then having to check on them after awhile!
