which reel?

I am stuck between two different reels to buy, a pflueger supreme or a shimano stradic. It will be used for walleye fishing. What would you recommend and why? Thank you in advance...

Northersportman, As you can see I just went through the same question and answer on the similar thread. I did end up going with the Shimano Saros, primarily because I couldn't find a Pflueger Supreme anywhere and I don't feel that is a good sign. I am confident in my decision that the Saros is the way to go.

i own another pflueger and i havent had a problem with it, as with shimanos. i can see what u mean about not finding them anywhere. They both look like great reels but i cant decide which one. the only problem i can see with the pfueger is that it has those big holes in the spool, which means cleaning more often. If i decided to get one i would order it online or find another way.

I work at a outdoors store that has a great reel repair program. After working on many different reels, I would go with the shimano. The pfluegers are harder to get parts for and a little more touchy. I have 4 stradics, 2 regular and 2 fi, they are all great and I would suggest them to anyone.

I hate cheese holed reels...Well it's actually the spool in the spinning reels. The more holes the more stuff gets in to it.

Price point the Pfleuger supreme is better value. The Stradic FI should cast better and you're paying a lot for the water proof drag system (previously only offered in the old Sustain reels) as wells as the sheilded Anti rust bearings. The Palladin gears are kind of grindy noisy, but expect them to be very commanding with a fish on.

If weight is important, the Supreme is 2 oz lighter (7.4) than the stradic. Both are very nice reels IMO. I ended up going with the supreme for my jigging rod setup, and a Shimano Saros for my general purpose rod (crankbaits mostly). Looked at the Stradics, but couldn't justify the additional $30 - So went with the Saros. If you are looking to save some money, definitly look at the Saros.

The price hike on the new Stradics is hard to swallow, making the Saros a better price point. If you have to look at gearing design, the Saros is more of a connection between a Symetre and a Stradic. If the new Stradic ups the ante on the old Stradic, then the Saros is the same as an ante up Symetre. That's what I think.

i have an older stradic that ive had for about 8 years now, never a complaint until this year when the anti-reverse started going out on me! not cool when you have a 45-50" sturgeon on!! my knuckles were bleeding from all angles by the end of the day. Does anyone know if i can send this reel to shimano and they can fix it more than likely?

As for all the shimano questions.. On the Stradic, They improved the spool design, the bearings are now shielded, water proof drag, and has the new paladin gears(strongest on the market I beleive).. And a worm gear.. the only difference between the Stradic and the Saros is the worm gear.. the stradic has one, the saros does not. The stradic will work better with braid lines and florocarbon.. otherwise, should be even up!

Sounds like the anti reverse bearings are getting something in them. If you're mechanically inclined, you can clean it out yourself. It takes a little work to get inside the rotor and then getting the anti reverse bearings out. These bearings will be labelled, no grease. All you have to do is put oil in them and run some rag through until they're clean and free of grime and debris. Re-oil it and put things back together. Re-grease whatever other parts that is necessary.

Deitz, I thought from the Saros and up, the anit-rust bearings are shieled?

i wonder how much it would cost to send it in and have them fix it? sometimes that gets to be more expensive for just parts than going out and buying a whole new reel!

Yep, I hate being without my tool (fishing rod or reel).

so over the years I've accummalated my tools and equipment. So then when I try to perform maintenance service myself, I won't feel as bad if it goes kaputz. It's amazing how when you see design of the gears insides do you realize how pivotal the Stradic is when it comes to separating cheaper reels and stepping up into better equipment.

Vexipro, Is your Stradic the old FG generation the one that comes with the rosewood handle? You said 8 years so that was around the time between the previous Stradic FH and the old FG's.
