There was a real strong sunfish bite earlier this week with a few crappies mixed in. Euro larvae on a small jig and a spring bobber. 17' of water away from the crowds.

I assume you mean Pine City, not Pine River.

What's your target: pike, walleyes, panfish? They're all in there. It's a lake that somedays you pop fish in the first hole you drill, but most days you need to move to find the good biters. Lots of people out there, so it's not hard to get a ballpark on where to start. But, you'll need to adjust from there.

Been very slow this year compared to the last few years. Alot of work finding the hungry fish. You will sleep good after a day of running around on that lake

if I have my directions right, my sister's place is on the east side about 1/2 mile south of the river mouth, I think we are going to try for crappies or sunnies, what's it like around the Island? were not to far from there, thanks guys

Alot of permies around the island. I haven't fished near the island since first ice. I would stay away from the crowds though. Thats where I've gotten lucky this year

No problem.

The road out of the floppy crappie is decent. The owner of the pokegama area bait store has been maintaining the roads. I have been mobile up there with a 4x4 truck and she aint nothing special.

Made it out to Pokegama for the first time today. We fished off of the west shore in about 13 ft. The first spot we tried marked some and saw some on the cam but couldnt get them to bite. Moved about a hundred yards and did really well. We had our limit of 20 crappies in about an hour from 330 to 430. Most fish between 9-10 inches a couple bigger, and a few sunnies mixed in as well. Half the fish came on black and the other half on glow.

Any new reports from up there? I keep meaning to get up there, last year we did pretty good this time of year. Also, think i would have any trouble getting around on the lake w/ a Ford Contour?

Pokegama was basically done for the year as of late Saturday. The water was coming up fairly fast and a long (really long) plank was your only option. My guess is that most lakes found their end date today.

was up there over the weekend of the 21st not to many places to get on ice was very soft and thickness varied a lot 18" to a few feet away 6". no more ice fishing for this guy we had to use a latter to a dock to get on the ice. the ramp on the noth end you could no longer use the ramp on the south end there was a couple of trucks with wheelers. we could hear them leave to head noth on the ice but to much fog could not see where they went.

Went up the snake in search of eyes...found sheephead. Joy. went back to the lake and searched in vain for more eyes so I went after some crappies. Once I found them a limit came fast. If your looking crappies out there think shallow...I mean really shallow. A foot or less is not absurd.

Don't forget about C/R on some of those pannies. No matter how good the lake is it will only sustain for so long. Just ask the guys from Upper Red. Stay safe. smile

You found sheepies in the Snake! Alright. I know where I am taking the kids this weekend (I'll be up there anyway). They are not a glamor fish, but when they are herded up they are fun.

I'd like to fish Pokegama this year. Anything biting yet? Is that the lake just west of the 2nd Pine City exit? Where is the public landing? Any information is appreciated.

It's west of the 1st pine city exit. Access to the right, right after you cross the snake river, can't miss it.

I'm headed out today if anyone is going. Call me if you want to fish smarter not harder and we can find the fish together. 7634583092

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
