south dakota juvies in the decoys take 2

Recommended Posts

Had a another great weekend of hunting the very last birds around in eastern SD. 98 sat morning for 5 guys and one video taping, and a limit of 80 for Sunday morning for 4 of us. Sat was sunny and little wind with 700 silo socks and 3 vortex’s. Birds finished well, but a little more wind it would have been ugly. Also shot 2 bands, both Ross’s geese. Went online and mine was banded 7-22-2006 in Nunavut. That night the same roost was scouted and the birds feed in the same field as the morning hunt. So Sunday we set up in the same field. Sunday we used 800 custom windsocks because the wind was blowing strong and we don’t like the movement of silos in higher winds. All I have to say about Sunday morning is FOG, WIND, JUVIES, WOW! We had an east wind with the roost less than 1/2 mile west of us, so they were coming to the sounds of the callers. We shot are first birds at 6:50am (sunrise) and are 80 by 7:15am, 25 minutes and 80 geese. The birds worked/finished well to say the least. Sunday morning seemed more like duck opener. Warm, foggy and a limiting in no time. I really wonder what we could have ended up with without the 20 bird limit. Of the 178 for the weekend we had less then 10 adults. Put on a ton of miles to find these geese put in the end in was worth it. This was my latest snow hunt in SD by 8 days. Hopefully these birds will stick around a few more days so we can get another shot at them. If not I hunted with some new friends and shared some memories. It was a great spring? Enjoy

Please do not post pictures of your glorious well planned hunt. Some of us get very jealous!

Well done.

I went one last time yesterday afternoon with a friend for a few hours.  We each got one, and we each missed one.  Raised about 20 birds at four spots, plus one deer.  Unfortunately, the season is now over.   It was a superb season though.  Second best season I've had with this dog.  She just had her 13th season.  I hope she can do it again next year.   I'll be sorting my sock drawer now for a couple months...

He can have this one!  Haha!  We shoulda maybe stayed on top in 14 but we could see the bottom so clearly and it was shallower than we really wanted.  The quick deeper water check yielded perch and pike right away, so we moved.  Caught plenty before dark, now pretty quiet.   I have a hunch the bay WILL fish shallower than the main lake we’re used to.   16 inches of good ice out here.

Thanks for reminding me to make sure that one is in the fish house!  It’s tradition that we watch that on the first trip every year.

Well that would explain it better n me forgetting about it!   I swear I chucked the last of em before we left the lake!

We (my wife mainly) are monitoring the pages of the big three pretty closely.  Not Mille Lacs though - we don’t go to the big one closest to us - haha.   We’re still shooting for Winnie tomorrow but might have to shift to Red if we can’t get out there yet.  Spent all day going through gear.  Bought a ton of bait.  Sharpened my spears and saw.  Way too much gear.   I also found out I forgot 1 ciscoe in my long rod box from my Ontario trip in March. Gaaggggghhh.  Everything out, washed with Dawn in hot water and set out to dry.  Still stinks but not like a punch in the nose stink.  And like me, after a long weekend fishing, after awhile I hardly notice the smell anyway.
