Walleye,

Give me a call on my cell. I teach at Cass Lake High School and have a lot of students who live on Winnie at my school.. I can keep updated for you on Winnie... My guess is Winnie will be Ice free next Thursday.. We have had some really strong winds the last few days and now we have 20% chance of showers Sunday thru Monday...

I was on Cass Sunday with the boat... I had to fix a motor issue... I launched at the HWY 2 access and there was open water about 40-50 yds out from shore... The rest of the lake was SOLID ice..

Today at school I will check in with the students.. I have a few resort owners kids and a bunch who live on the lake Winnie, so I will get an update and post back soon.. I also will be speaking with Donovan from the Big Fish today to get an update on thickness and conditions...

Colter; I will not be camping up there, at least not this weekend. You are right, it could be interesting finding fish that are willing to bite. It could be fun if you can find the females. The one difference from '96 is that nobody will be taking stringers of 5 pounders home with them...that slot will be really effective this early spring. I may come up and visit the campsites thou'. Are you staying at One-gume again?

I don't think Winnie will be ice free by tomm... Some of the students said there is still a lot of ice on the south side and it is thick. One of them measured 12 inches on one part that pushed up on shore yesterday...

Let's hope for some wind today and it would be nice to get a little rain during the daytime to help out a little too...

I know Cass is open mostly on the North end so I'm guessing Winnie is too...

Hope it works out for everyone...

Update:

Ice is covering everything on the Bena side.. Sounds like the ice goes all the way out to Bena Bar at least... As of right now Richard's is a no go for tomm.---Fish the North Side... We are suppose to have 5-10 MPH winds from the North...

Would anyone be willing to post any pictures of this. I would like to put a couple on reserve to look back at in a few years. Just curious. Thanks if this is possible.

Feel free to copy some of the photos off of our fishing report page at www.highbanks.com. The pictures were taken on 5/6/08 (the day before the ice went out at High Banks).

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.

For sound to return doesn't it need like, well a chamber, hills, valleys. 🤔 The Internet?    Um, sorry there's no hot redheads on this site screaming out in the wilderness for you!!

Anyone on here fishing Niles Point with a couple of kids last weekend?  You might want to let them know that the 'echo' they returned from across the lake has gone viral!    https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEQJ6lmxco0/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet   As of right now, 2.6 million views on Instagram and 1.1 million on TikTok...and climbing.  I feel happy when my posts on this board gets 12 likes! lol

I went one last time yesterday afternoon with a friend for a few hours.  We each got one, and we each missed one.  Raised about 20 birds at four spots, plus one deer.  Unfortunately, the season is now over.   It was a superb season though.  Second best season I've had with this dog.  She just had her 13th season.  I hope she can do it again next year.   I'll be sorting my sock drawer now for a couple months...

He can have this one!  Haha!  We shoulda maybe stayed on top in 14 but we could see the bottom so clearly and it was shallower than we really wanted.  The quick deeper water check yielded perch and pike right away, so we moved.  Caught plenty before dark, now pretty quiet.   I have a hunch the bay WILL fish shallower than the main lake we’re used to.   16 inches of good ice out here.

Thanks for reminding me to make sure that one is in the fish house!  It’s tradition that we watch that on the first trip every year.
