Fishing the open water/ice edge

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has success crappie fising open water at the shore on a lake that's still 95% ice covered. There's about 20 feet of open water at the shoreline.

It seems to me that it would be a good spot to fish, as the baitfish would "follow the light" so to speak. Anyone have experience with fishing at a time like this? I'm going to give it a try today and will report back.

I've had better luck when the water warms a bit.

But what the heck, give at a rip. With the long winter any action would be a good thing.

Let us know how you do.

Heck yeah! I caught a limit of crappies yesterday fishing from shore on a lake that only gave me 20 yards of open water..

That's awesome! I have never really done all that well except for carp in these types of conditions.
