best jig head ???

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend a jig head that they think really improved there catch rate for walleyes, have tryed alot of brands over the years but is there one that really stands out above the rest. any one that seems to hold the fish better and not have so many lost fish.

Patterson's real bait. It is a stand up jig with a blade on it. Or I prefer to use my own that I make.

You should match the style of the jig to how you're fishing. Fireballs are great for tipping with minnows, because they have a short shank and a wide hook gap. Round head long shank jigs are great for plastics, as the hook is positioned farther back in the plastic and the plastic fits the jig better. There's other styles too, swimming heads and stand-up jigs, etc. and they are all made to serve a purpose. Using the right jig head in the right situation should help you improve.

Are you really losing hooked fish on a jig, or missing bites? Missing bites will happen, but losing hooked fish with a jig is not very common. You should be using your drag (or better yet, backreeling) to give the fish some line and remove pressure when they're digigng for the bottom. You should be using a 6.5 to 7 foot rod, in Medium, Medium Light or even Light power with a fast action to fish jigs. I prefer mono for most situations but some guys prefer the no-stretch super lines.

As was mentioned, if you're missing lots of bites try a stinger hook.

LOL's...that'll really hook'm good.

I couldn't resist.

Anyway, I vote fireball overall as well for hard rocky bottom.

But I like those techni glow with the long shank and wide gap as well, for sandy or silt bottoms. Those Storm jig eye with I believe VMC hooks and minnow shape head under slipbobber.

A good all around jighead for live bait is the Northland Fireball or the Fin Tech odd ball.

There are a lot of jigs for a lot of techniques. I probably use more wide gap type jigs than anything else.

When using plastics I use a lot of bullet head jigs.

Tom what are you calling current cutters? I have seen a few different styles called current cutters.

Fireball comes in glow green, chart, orange and white. Plus they have the metalic colors wich I have had great success with on LOW and Rainy River/Lake. I really like the metalic chart on the St. Louis River.

Yep, fireballs and stingers here too. Only use stingers when the bite is real light and they help a lot.

nope. you can use a treble hook as long as its part of a lure. and ive asked a game warden about this so technically, you can put on a treble hook with a bead above it or a spinner or whatever and its considered a lure.

a treble hook by its self is considered the same as using 3 hooks on a single line i beleive.

Northlander,

Fin Tech odd ball

I am with you on that one. I am not a frequent walleye fisherman, but the FinTech Odd Ball is the first jig I reach for.

I use knuckle ball jigs a lot they are great when using plastics and they cut through the water better.

I really like the knuckle balls when draging jigs or working them real slow. I like the flat sided ones in current and the round in slower water or when I want a nice slow drop.

The way the hook is bent they work good on plastics but put a dab of crazy glue on the end of the plastic and tuck it up on the head and it keeps them on the hook better in current and when in weeds.
