Bait for sturgeon

Recommended Posts

My opinion...minnows are primary and crawlers are secondary. I often combine the two, but the crawlers are usually unnecessary.

Keep a short leader between your weight (2-3 oz.) and your hook. This keeps it from waving too much back and forth in the current, and helps the sturgies find it easier. What you want to do is get it on the bottom and keep it as still as possible.

We were using whole rainbow minnows, threaded on the hook like you would a night crawler. I like to fill up the hook, but thread it on so there is very little hanging off. This keeps the walleyes, suckers, and small sturgies "pecking" at it to a minimum.

Is there plenty of bait available in the area or should I expect to bring some from home for this coming weekend?
